The recent worldwide decline of honey bee colonies is a major ecological problem which also threatens pollinated crop production. Several interacting stressors such as environmental pressures and pathogens are suspected. Recently, the gut microbiota has emerged as a critical factor affecting bee health and fitness. We profiled the bacterial communities associated with the gut and whole body of worker bees to assess whether non-thriving colonies could be separated from thriving hives based on their microbial signature. The microbiota of thriving colonies was characterised by higher diversity an

Veterinarians are educated in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in various vertebrate species. As they are familiar with multifactorial health problems in single animals as well as in herd health management, their knowledge and skills can be beneficial for the beekeepers and honeybee health. However, in education and in practice, honeybees are not a common species for most veterinarians and the typical veterinary diagnostic methods such as blood sampling or auscultation are not applicable to the superorganism honeybee. Honeybee colonies may be affected by various biotic and abiot

Beeswax is a valuable honeybee product, which finds applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in cosmetic production. However, some substances used in apiculture, like tetracyclines, can be delivered to hives where they cause contamination of honeybee products such as beeswax. Tetracyclines are commonly used for the treatment of American and European foulbrood diseases, but in the European Union their usage by beekeepers is forbidden. Thus, a sensitive method for the analysis of tetracyclines in beeswax is an important analytical tool. A new liquid chromatography with

Feed supplementation in beehives is a commonly necessary practice in beekeeping today, to address the many risks the honey bees face, mainly the climate change and times of food scarcity, agricultural pesticides, or pathogens such as Varroa destructor or Nosema ceranae. Protein supplements and postbiotics products have been evaluated in beehives feed, obtaining improvements of the strength and sanitary status, but they have not been tested in combination. In this study, two experiences have been carried out in autumn and spring to check the potential beneficial effect of this combination in th

Honey bees are increasingly important in the pollination of crops and wild plants. Recent reports of the weakening and periodical high losses of managed honey bee colonies have alarmed beekeeper, farmers and scientists. Infestations with the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor in combination with its associated viruses have been identified as a crucial driver of these health problems. Although yearly treatments are required to prevent collapses of honey bee colonies, the number of effective acaricides is small and no new active compounds have been registered in the past 25 years. Reduction in pollinator abundance (predominantly honeybees) stemming from environmental and chemical stressors notably neonicotinoid pesticides poses serious threats to biodiversity and agricultural productivity. This study presents a scalable machine learning framework to foresee honey yield and assess the impact of neonicotinoid exposure. Drawing upon a curated dataset, of 825 records encompassing 16 agro-environmental and chemical parameters including colony counts, yield metrics, and pesticide residue concentrations. Subsequently, we assessed 13 classification models, marked improvement wa

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Traditional European forest honey (miód bartny), produced through low-intervention tree beekeeping (bartnictwo), represents one of the oldest known types of honey in Central and Eastern Europe. Despite the deep historical roots and cultural continuity, its background, sourcing, properties, value, medical use and evaluation practices remain understudied.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to experimentally evaluate historical knowledge related to miód bartny, by combining phytochemical analysis, antimicrobial testing, and reconstruction of historical methods of

Honeybees of the species Apis mellifera are important pollinators of crops and wild plants. Paenibacillus larvae, a spore-forming bacterium, is a problematic pathogen that causes American foulbrood (AFB) in honeybee larvae worldwide. In many countries, AFB is a notifiable disease, requiring the destruction of diseased colonies, resulting in economic loss that impacts beekeeping and agriculture. Disease onset starts with larval ingestion of P. larvae spores, which germinate into growing cells that proliferate in the larval gut, leading to larval death and eventually bee colony collapse. As infe

Nosema ceranae is a major pathogen in the beekeeping sector, responsible for nosemosis. This disease is hard to manage since its symptomatology is masked until a strong collapse of the colony population occurs. Conversely, no medicaments are available in the market to counteract nosemosis, and only a few feed additives, with claimed antifungal action, are available. New solutions are strongly required, especially based on natural methods alternative to veterinary drugs that might develop resistance or strongly pollute honey bees and the environment. This study aims at investigating the nosemos

Accurate antibiotic residue detection in honey is crucial for food safety and veterinary drug regulation in apiculture. Honey is a particularly challenging matrix. The high sugar content, strong viscosity, and pronounced matrix effects of the sample make it difficult to extract and detect target analytes effectively. Moreover, multiple antibiotics are used in beekeeping, while existing residue standards often provide incomplete coverage. These limitations highlight the urgent need for a robust and environmentally friendly multi-residue analytical method. In this study, a green and sensitive me

There is a growing interest in using agri-food by-products and a demand for natural substances that might help maintain healthy honey bee colonies. We investigated a by-product of the wine industry, a grape pomace (GP) of the autochthonous Prokupac grape cultivar from Serbia. A hydroethanolic extract (50% (w/v) ethanol) of GP (Prokupac GP extract) obtained by the pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) method was subjected to qualitative profiling of phenolic composition by liquid chromatography with OrbiTrap Exploris 120 mass spectrometer. Then, the extracts' antioxidant and redox-modulatory acti

In the current study, the impact of different acaricide treatments against Varroa (such as amitraz strips, oxalic and formic acid strips impregnated with glycerin, or the sublimation or instillation of oxalic acid) on glycerol residue levels of propolis was investigated. Propolis samples were collected from five beehives located in Chalkidiki (northern Greece), where all mentioned treatments were used and chemically analyzed and compared to control ones. Propolis samples were collected on days 7, 21, and 65 after the application of Varroa treatments, extracted with ethanol/water (70:30), silyl

Managed honey bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Apis mellifera Linnaeus) hives require frequent human inputs to maintain colony health and productivity. A variety of plant natural products (PNPs) are delivered via feeding to control diseases and reduce the use of synthetic chemical treatments. However, despite their prevalent use in beekeeping, there is limited information regarding the impact of ingested PNPs on bee health. Here, we tested the effects of different essential oils and propolis extracts on honey bee life span, nutrient assimilation, xenobiotic detoxification, and gut microbiota abundanc

The honeybee, Apis mellifera is economically important for its products (honey, wax, and propolis) and for its role in pollination. This insect is threated due to high population losses in both agriculture and beekeeping. Within causes involved in the loss of honeybees is the increased pesticide use on agriculture. Although current testing for the regularization of insecticide use considers its acute toxic effects on pollinators, little is known about the effects of chronic exposure to sublethal concentrations that may persist in the environment. This study investigated the effect of chronic e

Fumagillin is a mycotoxin produced, above all, by the saprophytic filamentous fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. This mold is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause invasive aspergillosis, a disease that has high mortality rates linked to it. Its ability to adapt to environmental stresses through the production of secondary metabolites, including several mycotoxins (gliotoxin, fumagillin, pseurotin A, etc.) also seem to play an important role in causing these infections. Since the discovery of the A. fumigatus fumagillin in 1949, many studies have focused on this toxin and in this review we gathe

Varroa destructor is a major pest in world beekeeping. It was first detected in Madagascar in 2010 on the endemic honeybee Apis mellifera unicolor. To evaluate V. destructor spread dynamics in Madagascar a global survey was conducted in 2011-2012. A total of 695 colonies from 30 districts were inspected for the presence of mites. 2 years after its introduction, nine districts were found infested. Varroa destructor spread was relatively slow compared to other countries with a maximum progression of 40 km per year, the five newly infested districts being located next to the first infested ones.

BACKGROUND: The protective effect of two isolates of an entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae (DEMI 002 and Iran 437C) on the adult stage of Varroa destructor was evaluated in comparison with fluvalinate strips in the field.
METHODS: A total of 12 honey bee colonies were provided from an apiculture farm. The selected hives were divided into 4 groups (3 hives per group). The first group was the control, treated with distilled water. The other two groups were exposed to different fungi (M. anisopliae isolates DEMI 002 and Iran 437C) and the last group was treated with one strip of flu

New Zealand is a remote country in the South Pacific Ocean. The isolation and relatively late arrival of humans into New Zealand has meant there is a recorded history of the introduction of domestic species. Honey bees (Apis mellifera) were introduced to New Zealand in 1839, and the disease American foulbrood was subsequently found in the 1870s. Paenibacillus larvae, the causative agent of American foulbrood, has been genome sequenced in other countries. We sequenced the genomes of P. larvae obtained from 164 New Zealand apiaries where American foulbrood was identified in symptomatic hives dur
