Learning in brain-computer interface control evidenced by joint decomposition of brain and behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Motor imagery-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) use an individual's ability to volitionally modulate localized brain activity, often as a therapy for motor dysfunction or to probe causal relations between brain activity and behavior. However, many individuals cannot learn to successfully modulate their brain activity, greatly limiting the efficacy of BCI for therapy and for basic scientific inquiry. Formal experiments designed to probe the nature of BCI learning have offered initial evidence that coherent activity across spatially distributed and functionally diverse cognitive

Executive functioning and risk-taking behavior in Parkinson's disease patients with impulse control disorders.

Impulse control disorders (ICD) are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and are associated with dopaminergic medication. The purpose of this study was to investigate executive function and risk-taking behavior in PD patients with ICD. 17 PD patients with ICD (ICD-PD) were compared to 20 PD patients without ICD (CTRL-PD) using neuropsychological and experimental tasks. Executive functions were assessed using standard executive testing (Conner's Performance Test, Modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Trail Making Test and phonological verbal fluency). Subjects were also submitted to an experiment

Perceived Control is a Transdiagnostic Predictor of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy Outcome for Anxiety Disorders.

Perceived control has been proposed to be a general psychological vulnerability factor that confers an elevated risk for developing anxiety disorders, but there is limited research examining perceived control during cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT). The present study examined whether treatment resulted in improvements in perceived control, and the indirect effects of CBT on changes in symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and panic disorder via changes in perceived control. Participants (n = 606) were a large clinical sample presenting for

Motor control of jaw movements: An fMRI study of parafunctional clench and grind behavior.

Jaw-clenching and tooth-grinding associated with bruxism can contribute to abnormal tooth wear and pain in the masticatory system. Clench and tooth-grinding jaw-movement tasks were evaluated in a block-design fMRI study comparing a dental-control (DC) group with a tooth-grinding (TG) group. Group classification was made prior to imaging based upon self-reported parafunctional clench and grind behavior and clinical evidence of abnormal tooth wear. Group differences in brain activation patterns were found for each task compared to the resting baseline. The DC group showed a more widely distribut

Neuroendocrine control of larval ecdysis behavior in Drosophila: complex regulation by partially redundant neuropeptides.

To complete each molting cycle, insects display a stereotyped sequence of behaviors to shed the remains of the old cuticle. These behavioral routines, as well as other related physiological events, are critical for proper development and are under the control of several neuropeptides. Their correct deployment and concatenation depends on the complex actions and interactions among several peptide hormones: ecdysis triggering hormone (ETH), eclosion hormone (EH), and crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP). Numerous theories, some in conflict, have been proposed to define the functional hierarchi

Developmental control of foraging and social behavior by the Drosophila neuropeptide Y-like system.

Animals display stereotyped behavioral modifications during development, but little is known about how genes and neural circuits are regulated to turn on/off behaviors. Here we report that Drosophila neuropeptide F (dNPF), a human NPY homolog, coordinates larval behavioral changes during development. The brain expression of npf is high in larvae attracted to food, whereas its downregulation coincides with the onset of behaviors of older larvae, including food aversion, hypermobility, and cooperative burrowing. Loss of dNPF signaling in young transgenic larvae led to the premature display of be

Stimulus control of addictive behavior: persistence in the presence and absence of a drug.

Rats were exposed daily to a food schedule-induced polydipsia condition, in which water and 0.16 mg/ml cocaine solution were available concurrently, with the cocaine solution indicated by a discriminative stimulus (SD) light. The cocaine solution was preferred, and the preference was maintained when the SD was gradually eliminated by fading its intensity. For a second group, if cocaine concentration was the stimulus gradually eliminated, preference for the resulting solution (water) indicated by the SD was stably maintained. For two additional groups, if either the light SD or the cocaine stim

Executive function and social behavior: Causal evidence from loading working memory and inhibitory control.

This article investigates how domain-specific executive functions contribute to perspective-taking and prosocial behavior. Across two preregistered experiments, we independently manipulated working memory (WM) and inhibitory control to assess their effects on social cognition. In Experiment 1 (N = 128), WM load was varied using a dual-task paradigm, and participants completed behavioral and eye-tracking measures of perspective-taking and prosociality. WM load impaired perspective-taking, and this effect was larger under nonsocial than social load. Conversely, individual differences in prosocia

Neurobiology of egg-laying behavior in Drosophila: neural control of the female reproductive system.

Egg-laying is one of the key aspects of female reproductive behavior in insects. Egg-laying has been studied since the dawn of Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism. The female's internal state, hormones, and external factors, such as nutrition, light, and social environment, affect egg-laying output. However, only recently, neurobiological features of egg-laying behavior have been studied in detail. fruitless and doublesex, two key players in the sex determination pathway, have become focal points in identifying neurons of reproductive significance in both central and peripheral nervous

Predicting physical activity behavior among university students using the multi-process action control framework.

Most university students do not engage in enough physical activity (PA) despite the known physical and mental health benefits. Action control theories such as the Multi-Process Action Control (M-PAC) framework have been proposed to better understand the translation of intentions into action by incorporating post-intentional processes. However, the explanatory power of the M-PAC framework beyond traditional social cognitive constructs has received limited attention. This study examined the predictive utility of the M-PAC framework for explaining variance in self-reported and device-measured PA

Bidirectional Control of Social Behavior by Activity within Basolateral and Central Amygdala of Primates.

UNLABELLED: Both hypoactivity and hyperactivity in the amygdala are associated with perturbations in social behavior. While >60 years of experimental manipulations of the amygdala in animal models have shown that amygdala is critical for social behavior, many of these studies contradict one another. Moreover, several questions remain unaddressed. (1) What effect does activation of amygdala have on social behavior? (2) What is the effect of transient silencing, rather than permanent damage? (3) Is there a dissociation between the roles of the central (CeA) and basolateral amygdala (BLA) in regu

Neural mechanisms of female sexual behavior in the rat; comparison with male ejaculatory control.

The sequential organization of sexual behavior of the female rat is described, eventually leading to the lordotic posture, shown during mating. A complex set of signals: olfactory, cutaneous sensory as well as genitosensory, is guiding the female to this specific posture, eventually. Genitosensory signals converge in the lumbosacral levels of the spinal cord, from where they are dispersed to a series of supraspinal brain areas, in the brainstem, thalamus, hypothalamus and limbic system. The similarity with the neural activation patterns observed in the male rat is remarkable. In a number of br

Fertility control of Rattus nitidus using quinestrol: effects on reproductive organs and social behavior.

Fertility control has been identified by studies in the laboratory and the field as a more appropriate and long-term control strategy for rodent pests than lethal control. In this study, we investigated the effects of quinestrol on mass of reproductive organs and on social behaviors in female and male Indochinese forest rat (Rattus andamanensis (Blyth, 1860)] using approach of morphometrics and genetics). [corrected]. A total of 16 adult females and 16 adult males were randomly assigned to 4 groups. One male and one female group were fed rice with 0.005% quinestrol by weight for 7 days, and an

GABAergic control of critical developmental periods for anxiety- and depression-related behavior in mice.

Vulnerability for anxiety and depressive disorders is thought to have origins in early life and is increasingly recognized to involve deficits in GABAergic neurotransmission. Mice that were rendered heterozygous for the γ2 subunit gene of GABA(A) receptors (GABA(A)Rs) show behavioral, cognitive, neuroendocrine and pharmacologic features expected of a mouse model of melancholic anxious depression, including reduced survival of adult-born hippocampal neurons. Here we embarked on elucidating the developmental substrate underlying this phenotype, focusing on the Elevated Plus Maze and Forced Swim

[REM sleep behavior disorder: an overt access to motor and cognitive control during sleep].

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is characterized by violent, or potentially violent, movements during REM sleep, corresponding to enacted dreams. During sleep monitoring, there is a partial or total loss of the normal muscle atonia during REM sleep. REM sleep behavior disorder predominantly affects elderly subjects without any other disease (idiopathic RBD, a precursor of Parkinson disease and Lewy body dementia) or suffering from various neurological and neurodegenerative diseases, mainly synucleinopathies. In addition to being a treatable cause of nocturnal injury of t

The role of adrenoreceptors in control of stereotyped oral behavior in restricted-fed fowls.

Effects on environmentally induced oral stereotypies (object pecking and drinker-directed activity) of preferential antagonists and agonists of adrenoreceptor subtypes were examined in individually caged broiler breeder fowls subjected to chronic food restriction. Three drugs in each category were injected intravenously at three doses, and their effects compared with a saline control treatment. With the antagonists, object pecking was suppressed more by prazosin (alpha 1) and propranolol (beta) than by yohimbine (alpha 2), while drinker-directed activity showed delayed stimulation with yohimbi
