Videoconferencing psychological therapy and anxiety: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The growing worldwide prevalence of individuals with anxiety disorders has increased needs for mental health services. Due to limited number of mental health providers and community resources, especially in low-income countries, individuals often seek services from primary care settings. Through collaborative care models, services via telemedicine address the mental health provider shortage. While previous reviews show telemedicine effectively treats mental illness, a gap exists for reviews on videoconferencing psychological therapy for anxiety treatment. OBJECTIVE: This systemati

A conjoint psychiatry-internal medicine program: development of a teaching and clinical model.

At a time when psychiatry's repertoire of successful treatment strategies is burgeoning and the public is seeking primary medical care with greater emphasis on humanistic issues, psychiatry has been paradoxically losing status and trainees, partly because it has failed to make its expertise integratable by nonpsychiatric physicians. In response to the educational and patient care deficiencies that result, two universities developed a teaching and clinical program that leads to partial integration of their departments of psychiatry and internal medicine. This collaborative approach includes a c

Getting results used: evidence from reproductive health programmatic research in Guatemala.

This article reviews 44 operations research projects aiming to improve reproductive health services in Guatemala, conducted by the Population Council from 1988 to 2001. It documents the experience of the research programme, traces the extent to which research results are identifiable in existing programmes, and analyses factors influencing utilization. Utilization of research results occurs as a gradual process of information sharing, where researchers influence decision-makers through a continual stream of information rather than a single set of findings. Utilization depends on leadership, co

Current research in canine and feline pheromones.

Pheromonotherapy seems to be a new therapeutic approach allowing practitioners to tackle the treatment of behavioral disorders in a natural, specific, and safe way. Although the efficacy of pheromones has been assessed in some specific behavioral problems, it seems that their range of action could cover the wide field of reduction of stress. Therefore, the use of pheromones should not be reduced to treatment of behavioral disorders (potentially associated with psychotropes or a behavioral modification program) but should be included in a strategy of improving the welfare of pets in veterinary

Intranasal substituted cathinone "bath salts" psychosis potentially exacerbated by diphenhydramine.

In this report, we describe a case of intranasal "bath salts"-associated psychosis. Symptoms developed during a 3-week binge and were potentially exacerbated by oral diphenhydramine taken for insomnia. The clinical case conference includes expert discussion from 3 disciplines: emergency medicine toxicology, behavioral pharmacology, and addiction medicine. It is hoped that the discussion will provide insight into the clinical aspects and challenges of addressing acute substituted cathinone toxicity, including acute psychosis, a major adverse effect of bath salts consumption.

Chronic Cervical Pain: Radiculopathy or Brachialgia

Chronic cervical pain is not always attributable to radiculopathy. Pain may derive from peripheral myofascial syndromes and/or central inflammatory root irritation from degradation of discal proteoglycans. This concept is presented with its application in 30 patients with follow-up observations up to 30 months. Twelve of twenty-five achieving a pain level of 0 (out of a possible 10), ten of twenty-five had a pain level of 2, and three of twenty-five had a pain level of 4. Five cases were considered to be failures because of patient noncompliance. Treatment was multidisciplinary: aggressive phy

Reduced behavioral withdrawal responses during fear retrieval in adult mice and rats.

Pain triggers emotional changes in humans and animals, including fear and anxiety. Conversely, fear and anxiety may enhance suffering of patients with pain. However, in animal models of acute pain, it has been reported that fear may inhibit pain by activating endogenous inhibitory systems. In this study, we wanted to examine if behavioral withdrawal responses may be affected during fear retrieval, a condition where fear-associated tone is applied. We found that thermal pain thresholds were significantly increased during fear retrieval. Our results indicate that animals are suffering fear like-

Influences on NHS Health Check behaviours: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: National Health Service Health Checks were introduced in 2009 to reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) risks and events. Since then, national evaluations have highlighted the need to maximise the programme's impact by improving coverage and outputs. To address these challenges it is important to understand the extent to which positive behaviours are influenced across the NHS Health Check pathway and encourage the promotion or minimisation of behavioural facilitators and barriers respectively. This study applied behavioural science frameworks to: i) identify behaviours and actors rele

Exploring lay perceptions of the causes of crib-biting/windsucking behaviour in horses.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Crib-biting/windsucking behaviour has important consequences for equine health and welfare. Lay perceptions of health and illness are of interest to medical sociologists, providing important information to medical practitioners, but have infrequently been applied in veterinary research. OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate how lay epidemiology can be applied within veterinary research by exploring the lay perceptions regarding the causes of crib-biting/windsucking behaviour in horses. METHODS: Informants were recruited from professional and amateur horse owners who had or

Unifying to Advance Understanding: Collaborative, Community-Driven and 'Open' Approaches for Better Science in Sport.

Historically, sport science and medicine researchers have had difficulty obtaining adequate sample sizes, limiting their ability to make accurate generalizations to populations of athletes. To move towards better and more generalizable research, sport could look to other fields of research, and draw upon collaborative approaches for performing science. These include concepts such as big teams approaches for conducting experimental research, developing data repositories centred on a holistic inter-disciplinary view of the athlete and exploring privacy preserving meta-analytic inspired concepts
