Multiple overlapping risk factors for childhood wheeze among children in Benin.

BACKGROUND: The African continent is currently facing an epidemiological transition characterized by a shift from communicable to non-communicable diseases. Prominent amongst the latter are allergies and asthma. In that context, wheeze has multiple potential contributory factors that could include some of the endemic helminth infections, as well as environmental exposures, such as household air pollution. We sought to determine the relative importance of these risk factors among children in Benin. METHODS: We included 964 children aged 6-14 years living in the commune of Comé, south-west Beni

Cattle ticks and associated tick-borne pathogens in Burkina Faso and Benin: Apparent northern spread of Rhipicephalus microplus in Benin and first evidence of Theileria velifera and Theileria annulata.

Babesiosis, theileriosis, anaplasmosis, and heartwater are tick-borne diseases that threaten livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa including Burkina Faso and Benin. For over a decade, these two bordering countries have been facing an invasion of the livestock by the tick Rhipicephalus microplus, a major vector for babesiosis, accidentally introduced in Benin in 2004. The molecular identification of tick-borne pathogens in this border area is of particular interest due to animals seasonal migration between the two countries. In this survey, epidemiological features of ticks and tick-borne

Women entrepreneurship and family-related barriers: an empirical analysis in Southern Benin.

This study investigates the family-related and socio-cultural barriers shaping women's engagement in small and medium-sized enterprises in Cotonou and Abomey-Calavi, the main economic hubs of southern Benin. Despite numerous initiatives aimed at promoting women's economic empowerment, institutional support remains insufficient, while entrenched social norms continue to constrain women's entrepreneurial activities. Anchored in the discourse on Sustainable Development Goal 5, the study emphasizes how socio-cultural structures produce and sustain gender-based vulnerabilities. A qualitative resear

Prevalence and clinical impact of severe anaemia in referral hospitals in southern Benin.

Severe anaemia is a critical public health issue worldwide, disproportionately affecting children in Africa, where approximately 40% of children aged 6 to 59 months are impacted. It leads to significant hospital and post-hospital complications. However, there is a notable lack of research on its burden and clinical impact, particularly in Benin, where existing data are outdated. This study aims to assess the prevalence and impact of severe anaemia in two areas of perennial transmission in southern Benin. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study at two referral hospitals in Benin, Lag

Surgical Repair of Ectopia Cordis in a Sub-Saharan African Country (Benin).

BACKGROUND: Ectopia cordis (EC) is an exceptionally rare congenital anomaly with a poor prognosis, particularly in resource-limited settings. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a newborn with complete thoracic EC who underwent surgical correction on day 5 of life. Although cardiac repositioning and soft tissue coverage were achieved, the infant died 72 hours postoperatively from septic shock, reflecting the significant challenges faced in such contexts. CONCLUSION: This case underscores the urgent need for improved antenatal care and technical resources to enhance outcomes for complex congenital a

The prevalence of headache disorders in children and adolescents in Benin: a schools-based study.

BACKGROUND: A global schools-based programme within the Global Campaign against Headache is estimating the burden of headache in children (6-11 years) and adolescents (12-17 years), cluster-sampling the world by conducting national studies in all world regions. Its purpose is to complement population-based studies in adults, adding to knowledge of the burden of headache and informing educational and health policies. This study in Benin was the third in the programme from sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). METHODS: We followed the generic protocol for the global study. In a cross-sectional survey, the

Enterobacteriaceae represent one of the main families of Gram-negative bacilli responsible for serious urinary tract infections (UTIs). The present study aimed to define the resistance profile and the virulence of Enterobacteriaceae strains isolated in urinary tract infections in Benin. A total of 390 urine samples were collected from patients with UTIs, and Enterobacteriaceae strains were isolated according to standard microbiology methods. The API 20E gallery was used for biochemical identification. All the isolated strains were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing using the dis
