Bifidobacterium breve is an anaerobic, gram-positive rod commonly found in the human intestinal microbiota. While rarely associated with bacteremia, most cases occur in neonates receiving B. breve-containing probiotics. Here, we report a rare case of B. breve bacteremia in an 80-year-old man presenting in cardiopulmonary arrest, despite not taking B. breve-containing probiotics. Blood cultures identified B. breve, and an 18-day course of antibiotics resolved the bacteremia. The rarity of adult cases may reflect age-related microbiota shifts and potential underdiagnosis due to the limited accur

Dietary fiber supplements are a strategy to close the 'fiber gap' and induce targeted modulations of the gut microbiota. However, higher doses of fiber supplements cause gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms that differ among individuals. What determines these inter-individual differences is insufficiently understood. Here we analyzed findings from a six-week randomized controlled trial that evaluated GI symptoms to corn bran arabinoxylan (AX; n = 15) relative to non-fermentable microcrystalline cellulose (MCC; n = 16) at efficacious supplement doses of 25 g/day (females) or 35 g/day (males) in adult

INTRODUCTION: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated polyneuropathy, involving the peripheral nervous system. The pathogenicity of GBS involves Th17/Treg imbalance, which may be affected by intestinal microbiota. From the previous study, treatment with Bifidobacterium infantis (B. infantis) significantly improved the symptoms of experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN) through reducing the levels of IL-17A. In the present study, we aimed to further investigate the pathogenic mechanisms of intestinal microbiota involved in GBS, with the intervention of Bifidobacterium.

Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic illness characterized by an inflammatory process triggered by gluten protein intake. Recent evidence has suggested that the lower relative abundance of bifidobacteria in the intestinal lumen may be associated with CD. Herein, we assessed the effect of the Bifidobacterium species Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium longum, Bembidion breve, Bifidobacterium animalis alone, and also a Bifidobacterium consortium on the digestion of intact gluten proteins (gliadins and glutenins) and the associated immunomodulatory responses elicited by the resulting peptides. The limited efficacy of available influenza vaccines against rapidly emerging new viral strains stresses the need for the development of new antigen-independent prophylactic treatment for enhancing immunity against influenza infection. Recent studies suggest that probiotics possess immunomodulatory properties and can reduce the severity of respiratory infections. Here, we investigated the potential of prophylactic Bifidobacterium bifidum in improving anti-influenza immune responses in an experimental lethal mouse-adapted influenza A (H1N1) infection in a BALB/c mouse model. One week after vira

This study investigated cloning and expression of enterovirus 71 viral capsid protein 1 (EV71-VP1) in Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum (B. pseudocatenulatum) M115. To achieve this, a codon-optimized gene coding for EV71-VP1 was analysed, designed, synthesized and cloned into a plasmid vector flanked by a transcriptional promoter and terminator sequences. The promoter was based on that of P919, a constitutive promoter of the gene encoding the large ribosomal protein of B. bifidum BGN4, while the terminator was based on that of the peptidase N gene of Lactococcus lactis. The construct was ampli

To better understand the role of gut microbiota in the anxiety, we isolated bifidobacteria and lactobacilli from the human faecal microbiota, investigated their inhibitory effects on the expression of interleukin (IL)-6 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages, and examined the anxiolytic-like effect of Bifidobacterium adolescentis IM38 in mice treated with or without immobilisation stress using the elevated plus maze (EPM) task. Oral administration of IM38 at a dose of 1×109 cfu/mouse showed a significant anxiolytic-like effect both in mice exposed to im

BACKGROUND: The intestinal microbiota has important effects on host immune responses and feeding with certain commensal organisms has anti-inflammatory effects in a variety of diseases, including experimental asthma. The aim of the current study was to examine how robust the effects of feeding with the commensal strain, Bifidobacterium longum (Bif) were on the pulmonary responses to allergen sensitization and challenge.
METHODS: BALB/c mice were given two intraperitoneal injections of ovalbumin (10 μg in alum) on days 0 and 7 and were fed daily with Bif or vehicle from days 0-14. Challenges w

Cigarette smoke has been known to affect the development of bowel disease. However it has not been fully elucidated how cigarette smoke has effects on the gut. In this context we evaluated not only caecal levels of organic acids but also populations of micro-flora and pH in caecal contents after exposing rats (n=5) to cigarette smoke for a 4-week in order to investigate whether the gut environment is altered by cigarette smoke or not. After the exposure of cigarette smoke, caecal levels of organic acids such as acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid and valeric acid significantly decreased.

Eighty-nine Bifidobacterium strains from 26 species were identified and classified to the species level with an enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR approach. We demonstrated that ERIC-PCR is useful for a phylogenetic and taxonomical analysis but as well as for a species composition analysis of mixed bifidobacterial cultures isolated from dairy products and other environments.

The present paper provides an overview on the use of probiotic organisms as live supplements, with particular emphasis on Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium spp. The therapeutic potential of these bacteria in fermented dairy products is dependent on their survival during manufacture and storage. Probiotic bacteria are increasingly used in food and pharmaceutical applications to balance disturbed intestinal microflora and related dysfunction of the human gastrointestinal tract. Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium spp. have been reported to be beneficial probiotic organisms

Fifteen lactose malabsorbers were studied to evaluate the effects of consumption of milk containing different strains of Bifidobacterium longum on lactose digestion. Influences of different growth substrates, bile sensitivity, and lactose transport on lactose digestion by bifidobacteria were also investigated. Lactose malabsorption was determined by measuring breath hydrogen excretion of subjects fed four different test milks (three of which contained 5 x 10(8) cfu/ml of B. longum) on 4 different d using a randomized, double-blinded trial. Test milks included 1) 400 ml of lowfat milk (control)

Bifidobacteria are important intestinal bacteria that provide a variety of health benefits in infants. We investigated the efficacy and safety of Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis (B. infantis) M-63 in healthy infants in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Healthy term infants were given B. infantis M-63 (n = 56; 1 × 109 CFU/day) or placebo (n = 54) from postnatal age ≤ 7 days to 3 months. Fecal samples were collected, and fecal microbiota, stool pH, short-chain fatty acids, and immune substances were analyzed. Supplementation with B. infantis M-63 significantly increase

Although antihypertensive drugs mitigate hypertensive vascular injury, their vascular benefits are not fully explained by blood pressure reduction alone. Many cardiovascular drugs reshape the gut microbiota, which in turn influences their vascular pharmacology. We therefore investigated whether gut microbiota remodeling contributes to nifedipine-mediated vascular protection in high-salt hypertensive rats and a pilot patient cohort. Combining 16S rRNA sequencing, untargeted metabolomics, fecal microbiota transplantation, microbiota depletion, supplementation, and selective receptor antagonism,

Diverse Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis strains are widely used as commercial probiotics. While proof-of-concept studies have shown that some strains can be edited using several CRISPR-Cas approaches, this species remains difficult to engineer, hindering functional genomic studies to establish their molecular mode of action and enhance their probiotic functionalities. Here, we show that >95% of available B. lactis genomes harbor a conserved Type I-G CRISPR-Cas system, which we leverage to develop and validate a broadly applicable genome editing framework. We redesigned backbone plasmids

BACKGROUND: International travel exposes individuals to abrupt environmental, dietary, and circadian changes that can disturb gut microbiota and overall well-being. While probiotics are known to support gastrointestinal and systemic health, their effects during short-term travel remain incompletely characterized in randomized trials.
METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated whether a multi-strain Bifidobacterium probiotic could maintain gut microbiota stability and support health during a five-day trip from China to Japan. Forty healthy adults were randoml

Endometritis is a prevalent uterine inflammatory disease that significantly compromises fertility; however, the host-microbial mechanisms governing disease susceptibility remain poorly defined. Although the gut microbiota is increasingly recognized as a central regulator of systemic and extraintestinal immunity, its role in uterine inflammation has received little attention. Here, we investigated whether gut microbiota dysbiosis modulates susceptibility to endometritis and sought to identify the microbial mediators underlying this relationship. Antibiotic-induced dysbiosis markedly exacerbated
