Alcohol use and binge drinking among women of childbearing age - United States, 2011-2013.

Excessive alcohol use is risk factor for a wide range of health and social problems including liver cirrhosis, certain cancers, depression, motor vehicle crashes, and violence. Alcohol use during pregnancy can lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) and other adverse birth outcomes . Community studies estimate that as many as 2% to 5% of first grade students in the United States might have an FASD, which include physical, behavioral, or learning impairments. In 2005, the Surgeon General reissued an advisory urging women who are or might be pregnant to abstain from alcohol consumption

Alcohol use and binge drinking among women of childbearing age--United States, 2006-2010.

Alcohol use during pregnancy is a leading preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities. Alcohol-exposed pregnancies (AEPs) can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome and other fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), which result in neurodevelopmental deficits and lifelong disability. In 2005, the Surgeon General issued an advisory urging women who are pregnant or who might become pregnant to abstain from alcohol use. Healthy People 2020 set specific targets for abstinence from alcohol use (MICH-11.1) and binge drinking (MICH-11.2) for pregnant women. To estimate the prevalence o

Measurement challenges in binge drinking research: Addressing sex and gender diversity in national surveys.

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of binge drinking is essential for understanding population-level health disparities. However, national surveys commonly rely on binary sex-based thresholds, which may introduce classification challenges when applied across diverse sex and gender classifications. METHODS: Data from the 2019-2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were used to examine binge drinking patterns among adults reporting transgender identity. Binge drinking was defined using standard sex-based thresholds (≥5 drinks for men, ≥4 drinks for women on a single occasion). Multivaria

Effect of single binge alcohol consumption on alcohol-naïve and -exposed drinking mouse models.

Binge alcohol exposure is underestimated compared to chronic intake, particularly in young or alcohol-naïve individuals. This study investigates the effects of single binge drinking, on both alcohol-naïve and alcohol-dependent drinking subjects. C57BL/6J mice received a binge ethanol dose (6 g/kg body weight; 40 % ethanol(v/v)), and subsequent haematological, hepatic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic changes were analyzed. In naïve mice, binge alcohol elevated serum AST levels, indicating acute liver injury. In ethanol-dependent mice (20 g/kg/day; 6 % ethanol(v/v)), single binge episode altered

Binge drinking episode causes acute, specific alterations in systemic and hepatic inflammation-related markers.

BACKGROUND: Frequent binge drinking is a known contributor to alcohol-related harm, but its impact on systemic and hepatic inflammation is not fully understood. We hypothesize that changes in immune markers play a central role in adverse effects of acute alcohol intake, especially in patients with early liver disease. AIM: To investigate the effects of acute alcohol intoxication on inflammation-related markers in hepatic and systemic venous plasma in people with alcohol-related liver disease (ArLD), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and healthy controls. METHODS: Thirty-eight partici

Factors associated with binge drinking-Findings from 2019 Kansas behavioral risk factor surveillance system.

Background: In the U.S., excessive drinking accounts for one in 10 deaths among adults aged 20-64 years old. Binge drinking is a common form of excessive alcohol consumption that contributes to this chilling statistic. Binge drinking is defined as women consuming four or more drinks or men consuming five or more drinks within a 2-h time span. Examining existing data on risk factors for binge drinking can inform strategies to prevent this deadly practice. Methods: The 2019 Kansas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) dataset consists of data collected from 11,368 non-institutionali

Can we boost attention and inhibition in binge drinking? Electrophysiological impact of neurocognitive stimulation.

RATIONALE: Binge drinking (i.e. excessive episodic alcohol consumption) among young adults has been associated with deleterious consequences, notably at the cognitive and brain levels. These behavioural impairments and brain alterations have a direct impact on psychological and interpersonal functioning, but they might also be involved in the transition towards severe alcohol use disorders. Development of effective rehabilitation programs to reduce these negative effects as they emerge thus constitutes a priority in subclinical populations. OBJECTIVES: The present study tested the behavioural

Sex Differences in Binge-Like and Aversion-Resistant Alcohol Drinking in C57BL/6J Mice.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder is characterized by compulsive alcohol intake, or drinking despite negative consequences. Previous studies have shown that female rodents have a heightened vulnerability to drug use across different stages of the addictive cycle, but no previous studies have studied females in a model of aversion-resistant alcohol intake. Here, we investigated sex differences in binge-like and aversion-resistant alcohol drinking in C57BL/6J mice using a modified drinking-in-the-dark (DID) paradigm. METHODS: In Experiment 1, 24-hour aversion to quinine (0, 100, or 250 μM) was a

[Acute renal failure due to rhabdomyolysis in McArdle's disease following binge drinking with seizures].

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 36-year-old gardener was admitted for tonic-clonic seizures after binge drinking. The next days he developed massive rhabdomyolysis with acute renal failure. Past medical history was unremarkable except for a similar episode of acute renal failure 14 years ago. At that time he had consumed alcohol as well. Furthermore, the patient complained of exercise-related painful muscle cramping and swelling. INVESTIGATIONS: The serum creatinine peaked at 8.5 mg/dl, blood urea at 126 mg/dl and the maximal level of serum creatinine kinase was 108 300 U/l. Because of the

Historical variation in young adult binge drinking trajectories and its link to historical variation in social roles and minimum legal drinking age.

This study examines historical variation in age 18 to 26 binge drinking trajectories, focusing on differences in both levels of use and rates of change (growth) across cohorts of young adults over 3 decades. As part of the national Monitoring the Future Study, over 64,000 youths from the high school classes of 1976 to 2004 were surveyed at biennial intervals between ages 18 and 26. We found that, relative to past cohorts, recent cohorts both enter the 18 to 26 age band engaging in lower levels and exit the 18 to 26 age band engaging in higher levels of binge drinking. The reason for this rever

Parental supply of sips and whole drinks of alcohol to adolescents and associations with binge drinking and alcohol-related harms: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Parents frequently supply alcohol to their children, often only sips. We investigated whether supply of sips and whole drinks, from parents and other sources, are differentially associated with subsequent drinking outcomes. METHODS: A cohort of 1910 adolescents (mean age 12.9yrs) were surveyed annually over seven years from 2010-11. We examined prospective, adjusted associations between the quantity of supply from parental and non-parental sources in the preceding 12 months and five outcomes in the subsequent year, over several consecutive years: binge drinking; alcohol-related ha

From binge drinking to future alcohol severity: The role of emotion regulation and emerging psychopathology.

OBJECTIVES: Binge drinking (BD) increases the risk for alcohol use disorders and other psychopathological disorders later in life. Emotion regulation (ER) deficits have been identified as a transdiagnostic risk factor, yet their role in risk trajectories is not well established. This is especially relevant in young BDs initially free of psychopathology, where emerging symptoms may shape risk trajectories toward severe alcohol use. Thus, this study examined whether ER difficulties mediate the link between BD and later alcohol severity, and whether emerging psychopathology moderates these associ

Acute-On-Chronic Liver Failure With Discordant Severity Assessments Following Binge Drinking: A Case Report.

Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is associated with high short-term mortality. We report a man in his 50s with alcohol-related cirrhosis who developed ACLF following binge drinking. Despite being classified as grade 1 ACLF according to the Japanese severity classification, he presented with severe metabolic acidosis and marked hyperlactatemia and died 4 h after admission. Another prognostic scoring system classified him in the most severe category. This case illustrates that different severity assessments may provide complementary information regarding ACLF severity and prognosis and unde

Physical sensations of craving in binge drinking and severe alcohol use disorder: A phenomenological approach.

BACKGROUND: Craving is a key concept in addictive disorders. However, despite seminal results identifying the pivotal role of its physical component, craving remains conceptualized as being centrally underpinned by psychological and cognitive processes. To explore the phenomenological dimension of physical craving in addiction, we measured self-reported body sensations of craving among individuals with subclinical (binge drinking, BD) or clinical (severe alcohol use disorder, SAUD) alcohol use disorders. METHODS: We used a body mapping technique, allowing for the free report of the bodily cou

Concurrent decline in teenage fertility rate and binge drinking? An observational study across 45 nations.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol consumption is associated with unintended pregnancies among teenagers. Its role as a broader determinant of teenage fertility rates remains unclear. We investigate whether adolescent binge drinking affects the number of teenage births. METHODS: Binge drinking data from 137,898 females aged 15-16 were collected in the HBSC study (2002-2018, 43 countries/regions) and 267,359 in the ESPAD study (1995-2019, 41 countries/regions). Age-specific fertility rates were from the Human Fertility Database and the World Health Organization. We examined changes over time in countries'

Neurobiological Effects of Binge Drinking Help in Its Detection and Differential Diagnosis from Alcohol Dependence.

The prevalence of binge drinking in the general population is 3-4 times higher than that of alcohol dependence. Neuroimaging studies show that binge drinking in adolescence impairs brain development and white matter integrity. Regions with reduced functional activity include the limbic system, ventral diencephalon, frontal lobe, and middle and inferior temporal lobes, whereas the right superior frontal and parietal lobes are typically hyperactivated. The observed activation of the frontoparietal areas might reflect the alternative memory system operating, whereas the reduced occipito-hippocamp

Altered brain functional connectivity and behaviour in a mouse model of maternal alcohol binge-drinking.

Prenatal and perinatal alcohol exposure caused by maternal alcohol intake during gestation and lactation periods can have long-lasting detrimental effects on the brain development and behaviour of offspring. Children diagnosed with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) display a wide range of cognitive, emotional and motor deficits, together with characteristic morphological abnormalities. Maternal alcohol binge drinking is particularly harmful for foetal and early postnatal brain development, as it involves exposure to high levels of alcohol over short periods of time. However, little is k

Intensity of Binge Drinking a Decade After the September 11th Terror Attacks Among Exposed Individuals.

INTRODUCTION: The 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center resulted in elevated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use among exposed individuals. The relationship among traumatic exposure, PTSD, and excessive drinking is well documented; however, little is known about these relationships in the long term. This study examines factors increasing binge drinking risk among exposed individuals a decade post-9/11. METHODS: In 2015-2016, data were analyzed from 28,592 World Trade Center Health Registry enrollees aged ≥18 years who completed the Wave 3 (2011-2012) survey. Women

Global prevalence of alcohol use and binge drinking during pregnancy, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Alcohol use during pregnancy is an established cause of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), with heavy drinking during pregnancy being explicitly linked to fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). This paper presents recent estimates of the prevalence of: (i) any amount of alcohol use during pregnancy; (ii) one or more binge drinking episode(s) (4 or more standard drinks on a single occasion) during pregnancy; (iii) FAS; and (iv) FASD among the general population globally and by World Health Organization region. It is apparent, based on the presented estimates, that alcohol use and binge drinking occ
