Zebrafish (Danio rerio) have become the pre-eminent vertebrate model in aquatic ecotoxicology, yet the evidence base on pesticide bioavailability, bioaccumulation, and bioconcentration in this species is characterised by profound methodological fragmentation that limits the derivation of reliable risk estimates. This review critically appraises the primary literature across five major pesticide classes, namely organophosphates, pyrethroids, organochlorines, triazole and succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicides, and herbicides, and argues that the field's central limitation is not a

Pesticide occurrence, composition, and bioaccumulation patterns in fish from the San Salvador River watershed (Uruguay) were evaluated by integrating biological, chemical, and environmental data. A total of 158 fish samples representing 31 species were analyzed across four seasons at nine sampling sites spanning a longitudinal gradient from headwaters to the river mouth, and results were compared with pesticide occurrence in water. Twenty-nine pesticide compounds were detected in fish tissues, with insecticides, particularly pyrethroids and organophosphorus compounds, the most abundant. Metola

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal that poses serious environmental and health risks. It reduces soil fertility and can cause renal failure, liver damage, bone fractures, hypercalciuria, and cancer in humans. Cd contamination in soil, originating from both natural and human activities, is especially concerning because it bioaccumulates in plants, entering the food chain and affecting crops like tomatoes, rice, cocoa, and lettuce. Understanding the mechanisms of Cd bioaccumulation and bioremediation in microorganisms isolated from Cd-contaminated soils is crucial for developing effectiv

This study investigated the concentrations of heavy metals in the water sources of the upstream region of the Huangpu River, the Yangtze River Estuary, and various areas in Shanghai, as well as the heavy metal concentrations in the blood of Shanghai residents. It aimed to analyze the heavy metal elements absorbed by the human body and the resulting pathological effects. The results revealed that surface water primarily contains five heavy metals: copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg), while water sediments primarily contain seven heavy metals: Cu, cadmium (Cd), Pb,

The term "Plastisphere" refers to the biofilm layer naturally formed by microorganisms attaching to plastic surfaces. This layer possesses the capability to adsorb persistent organic and inorganic pollutants, particularly trace metals, which are the focus of this research study. Immersion experiments were concurrently conducted in five locations spanning four European countries (France, Ireland, Spain, and Italy) utilising eight distinct polymers. These immersions, repeated every three months over a one-year period, aimed to evaluate the baseline bioaccumulation of 12 trace metals. The study u

Although organic matter (exudate) excreted by aquatic organisms is an important component of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the natural environment, its potential effects on the bioaccumulation of nanoparticles (NPs) remain unclear. In the present study, we examined the effects of the exudates from the protozoan Tetrahymena thermophila on the bioaccumulation (including uptake and cell surface adsorption) of iron oxide (Fe2O3, polyacrylate coated) and silica (SiO2) NPs in T. thermophila. The exudates were mostly (93.6 %, in carbon) composed of < 1-kDa molecules (e.g., lipids). When the exuda

The increasing frequency and severity of wildfires are among the most visible impacts of climate change. However, the effects of wildfires on mercury (Hg) transformations and bioaccumulation in stream ecosystems are poorly understood. We sampled soils, water, sediment, in-stream leaf litter, periphyton, and aquatic invertebrates in 36 burned (one-year post fire) and 21 reference headwater streams across the northwestern U.S. to evaluate the effects of wildfire occurrence and severity on total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) transport and bioaccumulation. Suspended particulate THg and MeHg co

Ocean plastic pollution is a global concern, exacerbated by the distinctive physiochemical characteristics of nanoplastics (NPs), making it crucial to study the impacts on marine animals, particularly fish, given their ecological and economic importance. Both trophic transfer and waterborne exposure are potential modes of NP entry into seafood for human consumption Although the majority of studies have focused on in-vitro impacts of NP exposure in fish, in-vivo methods can offer a more holistic understanding of these impacts. This study investigates polystyrene NP transfer to Coryphaena hippur

Benzylalkyldimethylammonium chloride (BAC), a quaternary ammonium compound (QAC), is utilized in industrial and biomedical applications for antimicrobial purposes. Since the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, various types of BAC-containing household chemicals have been produced. BACs have several adverse effects; however, their biological uptake, translocation, and excretion in animal models (essential for better understanding in vivo behavior and toxicological impact) remain unclear. In this study, we performed the first biodistribution and whole-body imaging studies of BAC in male Spr

Mercury (Hg), a potent neurotoxic element, can biomagnify through food webs once converted into methylmercury (MeHg). Some studies have found that selenium (Se) exposure may reduce MeHg bioaccumulation and toxicity, though this pattern is not universal. Se itself can also be toxic at elevated levels. We experimentally manipulated the relative concentrations of dietary MeHg and Se (as selenomethionine [SeMet]) for an aquatic grazer (the mayfly, Neocloeon triangulifer) and its food source (diatoms). Under low MeHg treatment (0.2 ng/L), diatoms exhibited a quadratic pattern, with decreasing diato

Influences of colloidal stabilities of nanoparticles (NPs) on the bioaccumulation of co-existing pollutants remains largely unknown. In this study, two oxidation products of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) with totally varied colloidal stabilities, termed highly oxidized nZVI (HO-nZVI) and lowly oxidized nZVI (LO-nZVI), were exposed to zebrafish with chromium (Cr); this approach was used to investigate the impacts of colloidal stability of oxidized nZVI on the bioaccumulation of Cr in zebrafish. A significant increase in the Cr and NP content in the viscera of fish in the presence of the oxi

Wildlife are exposed to neurotoxic mercury at locations distant from anthropogenic emission sources because of long-range atmospheric transport of this metal. In this study, mercury bioaccumulation in insectivorous bat species (Mammalia: Chiroptera) was investigated on a broad geographic scale in Canada. Fur was analyzed (n=1178) for total mercury from 43 locations spanning 20° latitude and 77° longitude. Total mercury and methylmercury concentrations in fur were positively correlated with concentrations in internal tissues (brain, liver, kidney) for a small subset (n=21) of little brown bats

Mercury (Hg) contamination in aquatic systems remains a global concern with the biomagnification of methylmercury (MeHg) through primary consumers (zooplankton) to fish and humans. In this study, total mercury (THg) and MeHg concentrations were analyzed in zooplankton collected from Baihua reservoir (Guizhou Province, China). Our results demonstrated that THg and MeHg concentrations were strongly correlated to zooplankton community and biomass composition. The THg concentration was significantly higher in micro-zooplankton compared to meso-zooplankton and macro-zooplankton, and MeHg concentrat

Seabirds are widely used as bioindicators of mercury (Hg) contamination in marine ecosystems and the investigation of their foraging strategies is of key importance to better understand methylmercury (MeHg) exposure pathways and environmental sources within the different ecosystems. Here we report stable isotopic composition for both Hg mass-dependent (e.g. δ202Hg) and mass-independent (e.g. Δ199Hg) fractionation (proxies of Hg sources and transformations), carbon (δ13C, proxy of foraging habitat) and nitrogen (δ15N, proxy of trophic position) in blood of four species of sympatric penguins bre

Mercury and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) accumulate in organisms through food webs and exert potentially toxic effects on aquatic organisms and humans. This study examined the levels of mercury and PCDD/Fs in organisms and sediment samples collected from a saltwater pond at the An-Shun site, a chloralkali factory that shut down in Tainan City, Taiwan. It was also a pentachlorophenol production plant. After the factories were shut down in the 1980s, mercury and PCDD/Fs contamination remained, posing severe health hazards. The correlation between PCDD/Fs congener

Environmental disturbances like deforestation or climate change may influence lake thermal and oxic stratification, thereby modifying cycles of contaminants such as mercury (Hg). In a lake naturally separated into three basins, the thermocline and oxycline of an experimental basin were deepened by 4 and 3 m, respectively, to study the effect on the methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation. This treatment decreased hypolimnetic MeHg concentration by approximately 90%, zooplankton concentrations by 30 to 50%, and in some fish by 45%. A multiple linear regression indicated that oxycline depth significan

In the current study, the effects of phytoplankton cell size and methylmercury (MeHg) speciation on the bioaccumulation of MeHg by marine phytoplankton were investigated. Volume concentration factors (VCFs) of MeHg were determined in relation to the surface area to volume ratio of the cells for four species of diatom and a cyanobacteria species cultured in unenriched seawater. The VCFs of MeHg, ranging from 7.3 × 10(4) to 1.6 × 10(6) , increased linearly as the cell surface area-to-volume ratio increased. It suggests that pico- and nano-dominated phytoplankton communities may lead to larger Me

The low Ebro River basin (NE Spain) represents a particular case of chronic and long-term mercury pollution due to the presence of an industrial waste (up to 436 μg/g of Hg) coming from a chlor-alkali plant Albeit high total mercury (THg) levels have been previously described in several aquatic species from the surveyed area, methylmercury (MeHg) values in fish individuals have never been reported. Accordingly, in order to investigate bioaccumulation patterns at different levels of the aquatic food web of such polluted area, crayfish and various fish species, were analysed for THg and MeHg con
