Recent advances in designing high-performance and enzymatically degradable plastics.

Plastics have become indispensable in modern life, yet their end-of-life waste continues to accumulate, causing severe environmental pollution and posing risks to ecosystems and human health. This urgent challenge has driven the development of sustainable plastics as alternatives to conventional persistent plastics, among which biodegradable plastics are particularly promising. Owing to their reduced environmental footprint and their ability to undergo mild biodegradation mediated by efficient enzymes, biodegradable plastics have attracted increasing attention from both academia and industry i

Microbial degradation mechanisms, degradation pathways, and genetic engineering for pyrethroids: current knowledge and future perspectives.

Pyrethroids are synthetic products derived from natural pyrethroids present in flowers and are extensively used as pesticides for agriculture, animal husbandry, and household pest control. However, excessive and prolonged usage of pyrethroid insecticides can result in adverse effects on both non-target and target species. Therefore, effective technologies need to be developed to remove pyrethroid contamination and ensure environmental safety. Microbial remediation of various pesticide contaminants is highly practicable, low cost, and eco-friendly compared to physical and chemical methods. Diff

Artificial selection improves pollutant degradation by bacterial communities.

Artificial selection is a promising way to improve microbial community functions, but previous experiments have only shown moderate success. Here, we experimentally evaluate a new method that was inspired by genetic algorithms to artificially select small bacterial communities of known species composition based on their degradation of an industrial pollutant. Starting from 29 randomly generated four-species communities, we repeatedly grew communities for four days, selected the 10 best-degrading communities, and rearranged them into 29 new communities composed of four species of equal ratios w

Mercury's poisonous pulse: Blazing a new path for aquatic conservation with eco-friendly mitigation strategies.

Many compounds and inorganic elements released from natural and anthropogenic origins contaminate the environment and are implicated in catastrophes involving most biologically driven ecological processes and public health. One such element is Mercury. Mercury exists in both inorganic elemental form and the more metabolically active molecular form e.g. methyl mercury. They enjoy wide applications in medicine and form key components of numerous electrical and electronic devices. Unfortunately, severe health and adverse physiological conditions have developed from the impacts of mercury on the f

Distribution of microbial arsenic reduction, oxidation and extrusion genes along a wide range of environmental arsenic concentrations.

The presence of the arsenic oxidation, reduction, and extrusion genes arsC, arrA, aioA, and acr3 was explored in a range of natural environments in northern Chile, with arsenic concentrations spanning six orders of magnitude. A combination of primers from the literature and newly designed primers were used to explore the presence of the arsC gene, coding for the reduction of As (V) to As (III) in one of the most common detoxification mechanisms. Enterobacterial related arsC genes appeared only in the environments with the lowest As concentration, while Firmicutes-like genes were present throug

[Application of mercury-resistant genes in bioremediation of mercurials in environments].

Mercury and its organic compounds, especially methylmercury are extremely hazardous pollutants that have been released into the environment in substantial quantities by natural events and anthropogenic activities. Due to the acute toxicity of these contaminants, there is an urgent need to develop an effective and affordable technology to remove them from the environments. Recently, attempts have been made to utilize bacterial mer operon-mediated reduction and volatilization of mercurials for environmental remediation of mercury pollution. However, application of this technology to the treatmen

Acceleration a yeast-based biodegradation process of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics by Tween 20: Efficiency, by-product analysis, and metabolic pathway Prediction.

Polyethylene terephthalate is a widely produced plastic polymer that exhibits considerable biodegradation resistance, making its derived microplastics ubiquitous environmental pollutants. In this study, a new yeast strain (Vanrija sp. SlgEBL5) was isolated and found to have lipase and esterase-positive capabilities for degrading polyethylene terephthalate microplastics. This isolate changed the microplastic surface charge from -19.3 to +31.0 mV and reduced more than 150 μm of its size in addition to reducing the intensity of the terephthalate, methylene, and ester bond functional groups of the

Superior sequence-controlled poly(L-lactide)-based bioplastic with tunable seawater biodegradation.

Developing superior-performance marine-biodegradable plastics remains a critical challenge in mitigating marine plastic pollution. Commercially available biodegradable polymers, such as poly(L-lactide) (PLA), undergo slow degradation in complex marine environments. This study introduces an innovative bioplastic design that employs a facile ring-opening and coupling reaction to incorporate hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) into PLA, yielding PEG-PLA copolymers with either sequence-controlled alternating or random structures. These materials exhibit exceptional toughness in both wet and dry

Sulfadiazine chlorination disinfection by-products in constructed wetlands: Identification of biodegradation products and inference of transformation pathways.

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) formed from chlorination of antibiotics have greater toxicity than their parent compounds. Herein, this study investigated the biotransformation process of sulfadiazine Cl-DBPs in constructed wetlands (CWs). Results showed that, S atom on sulfonyl group, and N atoms on primary and secondary amine groups were the most reactive sites of sulfadiazine molecule. S1-N4 and S1-C8 of sulfadiazine are the most vulnerable bonds to cleave, followed by C14-N4 and C11-N5 bonds. In the chlorination process, sulfadiazine went through C-N bond cleavage, N-reductive alkylation,

Fluorochemicals biodegradation as a potential source of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) to the environment.

The anthropogenic release of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) into the environmental media is not limited to photochemical oxidation of CFC alternatives and industrial emissions. Biological degradation of some fluorochemicals is expected to be a potential TFA source. For the first time, we assess if the potential precursors [6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (6:2 FTOH), 4:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (4:2 FTOH), acrinathrin, trifluralin, and 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylic acid (TFMAA)] can be biologically degraded to TFA. Results show that 6:2 FTOH was terminally transformed to 5:3 polyfluorinated acid (5:3 FTCA; 12

Microbial assisted alleviation of nickel toxicity in plants: A review.

Nickel (Ni) is required in trace amounts (less than 500 µg kg-1) in plants to regulate metabolic processes, the immune system, and to act as an enzymatic catalytic cofactor. Conversely, when nickel is present in high concentration, it is considered as a toxic substance. Excessive human nickel exposure occurs through ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact, ultimately leading to respiratory, cardiovascular, and chronic kidney diseases. Due to anthropogenic activities, the nickel concentrations in various environmental scenarios have progressively risen to levels as high as 26,000 ppm in soil an

Effects of physicochemical properties of Au cyanidation tailings on cyanide microbial degradation.

The initial cyanide (CN-) concentration and amount of co-contaminants in GCTs can inhibit bacterial growth and reduce the CN--degrading ability of bacteria. Several microorganisms can biotransform a wide range of organic and inorganic industrial contaminants into nontoxic compounds. However, active enzymatic CN- metabolism processes are mostly constrained by the physical and chemical characteristics of GCTs. High concentrations of toxic metal co-contaminants, such as, Pb, and Cr, and factors, such as pH, temperature, and oxygen concentration create oxidative stress and limit the CN--degrading

Drotaverine hydrochloride degradation using cyst-like dormant cells of Rhodococcus ruber.

This work has a focus on adaptive capabilities of the actinobacterium Rhodococcus ruber IEGM 326 to cope with drotaverine hydrochloride (DH), a known pharmaceutical pollutant. Cultivation of R. ruber in a nitrogen-limited medium with incubation at the ambient temperature resulted in the formation of cyst-like dormant cells (CLDCs). They maintained viability for 2-7 months, possessed the undetectable respiratory activity and elevated resistance to heating, and had a specific morphology. CLDCs are regarded to ensure long-term survival in various habitats and may be used as storage formulations.

Phytostabilization of metal contaminated soils.

The contamination of soils with heavy metals represents a worldwide environmental problem of great concern. Traditional methods for the remediation of metal contaminated soils are usually very expensive and frequently induce adverse effects on soil properties and biological activity. Consequently, biological methods of soil remediation like phytoremediation (the use of green plants to clean up contaminated sites) are currently receiving a great deal of attention. In particular, chemophytostabilization of metal contaminated soils (the use of metal tolerant plants together with different amendme
