Influence of sampling sufficiency on biodiversity analysis of microperiphyton communities for marine bioassessment.

INTRODUCTION: With quick responses to environmental changes, easy sampling, relative immobility, increasing availability of easily used taxonomic references, and allowing standardization for temporal and spatial comparisons, the biodiversity measures of microperiphyton communities have widely been accepted as useful indicators to evaluate environmental stress and anthropogenic impact. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The influence of sampling sufficiency for biodiversity analysis of microperiphyton communities was studied using a range of statistical methods in coastal waters of the Yellow Sea, norther

Deciphering the biodiversity of Listeria monocytogenes lineage III strains by polyphasic approaches.

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen of humans and animals. The majority of human listeriosis cases are caused by strains of lineages I and II, while lineage III strains are rare and seldom implicated in human listeriosis. We revealed by 16S rRNA sequencing the special evolutionary status of L. monocytogenes lineage III, which falls between lineages I and II strains of L. monocytogenes and the non-pathogenic species L. innocua and L. marthii in the dendrogram. Thirteen lineage III strains were then characterized by polyphasic approaches. Biochemical reactions demonstrated 8 biotypes,

A curious coincidence: mosquito biodiversity and the limits of the Japanese encephalitis virus in Australasia.

BACKGROUND: The mosquito Culex annulirostris Skuse (Diptera: Culicidae) is the major vector of endemic arboviruses in Australia and is also responsible for the establishment of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in southern Papua New Guinea (PNG) as well as its incursions into northern Australia. Papua New Guinea and mainland Australia are separated by a small stretch of water, the Torres Strait, and its islands. While there has been regular JEV activity on these islands, JEV has not established on mainland Australia despite an abundance of Cx. annulirostris and porcine amplifying hosts. De

Toward Precision Biodiversity Detection: An Edge-Deployable Framework for Mitigating Data Redundancy.

Monitoring wildlife in remote areas is vital for biodiversity research, yet infrared-triggered cameras often produce large numbers of false or empty images due to environmental interference, causing data overload and power waste. To address this, this manuscript proposes WS-YOLO, a lightweight edge-optimized wildlife detection model based on improved YOLOv11n, which aims to integrate false-trigger filtering and accurate animal detection in a single model for field applications. Specifically, the model introduces three key enhancements: it adopts a Wavelet Convolution (WTConv) module to capture

Distinct Environmental DNA States Reveal Biodiversity and Transport Patterns Across Alpine Watersheds.

Environmental DNA (eDNA) exists in three states: membrane-bound, adsorbed and dissolved. These states differ in persistence and degradation, strongly influencing the interpretation of eDNA data. Despite this, they have rarely been separated and analyzed independently from environmental samples. We developed a state-sorting workflow to isolate and analyze them, applying it to samples from 221 sites from 58 streams across eight lake watersheds with COI and ITS metabarcoding, targeting metazoans and plants, respectively, to reveal differences in biodiversity content and transport dynamics. Our re

DNA barcoding reveals novel biodiversity in ticks (Acari: Ixodida: Ixodidae) of Ethiopia.

Identification of hard ticks (Acari: Ixodida: Ixodidae) is problematic due to inconsistent diagnostic characters, sexual dimorphism, individual variation, and vast morphological differences among life stages, as well as distortion through blood feeding. DNA barcoding has proven useful in delineating tick species, but available genetic databases are littered with misleading mis-identifications, hindering tick-borne disease mitigation strategies. Efforts are needed to generate high quality reference sequences from expertly identified and morphologically vouchered samples. To date, 56 species of

Biodiversity and spatial distribution of potentially ciguatera-causing dinoflagellates using DNA metabarcoding.

Ciguatera poisoning (CP) is a foodborne disease caused by eating seafood containing ciguatoxins from benthic dinoflagellates of the genus Gambierdiscus. Moreover, the related Fukuyoa, which often coexists with Gambierdiscus, also produces potent marine toxins. Though CP is endemic to tropical regions, it is increasingly being reported elsewhere, including the Canary Islands (NE Atlantic). In the Balearic Islands (W Mediterranean), potentially ciguatoxin-producing species have been found frequently in recent years, but so far without documented CP. Since toxin production varies greatly among Ga

Real-time biodiversity analysis using deep-learning algorithms on mobile robotic platforms.

Ecological biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate. To combat such irreversible changes in natural ecosystems, biodiversity conservation initiatives are being conducted globally. However, the lack of a feasible methodology to quantify biodiversity in real-time and investigate population dynamics in spatiotemporal scales prevents the use of ecological data in environmental planning. Traditionally, ecological studies rely on the census of an animal population by the "capture, mark and recapture" technique. In this technique, human field workers manually count, tag and observe tagged i

Arbuscular mycorrhizae mitigate negative impacts of soil biodiversity loss on grassland productivity.

Grassland degradation decreases ecosystem productivity and diminishes soil biodiversity, leading to the loss of beneficial microorganisms. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a critical role in ecosystem functioning, being a key link between plant and microbial communities, soil, and vegetation. Here, we evaluated the potential of increasing the productivity of degraded grassland by AMF inoculation. A gradient of soil biodiversity: complete sterilization, low, moderate, and high biodiversity was established using the dilution-to-extinction approach. Grassland microcosms under greenhouse co

Regenerating forests around Taï National Park sustain biodiversity despite constrained floristic recovery.

Extensive deforestation and disturbance have reshaped forest landscapes in West Africa, including areas surrounding Taï National Park, the largest remaining block of Upper Guinean rainforest. Although many degraded areas are currently undergoing regeneration, the capacity of these secondary forests to recover their biodiversity attributes remains insufficiently assessed within this park. This study quantifies the multidimensional restoration of biodiversity across 125 secondary forest plots and 15 primary forest plots representing 14,731 inventoried individuals in four sectors of the park. Structural Shift of Global Consumption-Based Biodiversity Threats from Land to Climate.

Current global biodiversity conservation targets focus predominantly on terrestrial habitat protection and reducing deforestation. However, these targets may overlook the climate-biodiversity nexus and the structural shift of global biodiversity threats. This study constructs a multistressor biodiversity footprint (BF) assessment framework to quantify the biodiversity impacts driven by land use, carbon emissions, and water consumption. Using the EXIOBASE 3.9.6 database and the LC-IMPACT model, we traced temporal changes in consumption-based BFs across 49 economies for 2000, 2010, 2020, and 202

Translating Ecological Realism into Ecotoxicology: An Experimental Approach for Assessing Plant Biodiversity.

Traditional ecotoxicological assessments predominantly rely on single-species bioassays, often failing to address the complex interspecific interactions and structural resilience inherent in natural ecosystems. In this study, we developed a community-level ecotoxicological approach using soil seed banks as a representative ecological proxy. By reconstructing diverse plant assemblages directly from field-sampled soil (26 species, 455 individual plants), we evaluated the impacts of a model chemical (cadmium, Cd) on multidimensional end points, including plant diversity, biomass productivity, and

Presenting the scientific discourse of biodiversity loss through drivers, solutions, and responsibilities.

Biodiversity loss is considered a major global issue, but at the same time, scientists interpret it differently, identifying varied drivers, solutions, and responsibilities in their published works. These interpretations shape the scientific narratives these scientists use to discuss biodiversity loss, which, in turn, affects policy through the biodiversity science-policy interface. However, a comprehensive overview of these different narratives within biodiversity loss literature is lacking. To address this gap in knowledge, we conducted a literature review of contemporary, global biodiversit

Biodiversity and emerging infectious threats: the microbial dark matter of Southwest China.

Southwest China is a global biodiversity hotspot, and its complex and diverse ecosystems harbor vast amounts of "microbial dark matter." This paper systematically examines the distribution characteristics of microbial dark matter in hosts such as arthropods, mammals, and birds, as well as in environments including soil, hot springs, and high-altitude lakes, with a particular focus on the cross-species transmissibility and pathogenic potential of emerging pathogens. Research indicates that new microbial species in the Southwest exhibit significant geographic concentration and host specificity:

A Quantitative Approach to Biodiversity Offset Multipliers: Managing Uncertainty in Complex Projects.

Biodiversity offsetting is a widely used strategy to mitigate residual environmental impacts from development projects, with the objective of achieving No Net Loss (NNL). However, offsetting efforts are often undermined by uncertainty in outcomes, time delays in implementation, and inconsistent valuation methods. We present a robust, quantitative framework for calculating biodiversity offset multipliers that explicitly incorporate uncertainty across multiple offsets within a project. Building on previous work, we model offsets and impacts as stochastic values and apply Monte Carlo simulations

A Unified Life Cycle Impact Assessment Framework for Global Terrestrial Biodiversity Decline.

Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) translates emissions and resource use into a set of environmental impact indicators, forming a key component of life cycle assessments. Current LCIA methods quantify biodiversity loss per pressure-impact pathway separately and at various spatial scales. We developed a new, spatially explicit and scale-consistent LCIA framework and applied it to derive characterization factors (CFs) for the impacts of land use, nitrogen emissions, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on global terrestrial plant diversity. The framework combines the local potentially disappeared

Spatial and Temporal Biodiversity Patterns of Frugivorous Tephritid Communities Across Argentinean Drylands.

Frugivorous fruit flies include several major agricultural pests, and understanding their species composition and seasonal abundance in natural environments is essential for improving management strategies. In Argentina, research has focused mainly on two economically important species, Ceratitis capitata and Anastrepha fraterculus, while native fruit flies in dryland ecosystems remain poorly studied. To address this gap, we conducted a year-long trapping survey in three dryland environments of northwestern Argentina: the dry Chaco, Chaco Montane Forest, and Monte, in order to characterize and

Food biodiversity and mortality in older Mediterranean adults with high cardiovascular risk.

The food system is a key determinant of population and planetary health. As the "one planet, one health" approach gains momentum, evaluating "food biodiversity" and its association with mortality in high-risks populations is increasingly important. Hence, we evaluated the associations of food biodiversity with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in a Spanish cohort of older adults at high cardiovascular risks. Food biodiversity was defined using dietary species richness (DSR), the count of unique plants and animal species consumed by an individual. DSR was cumulatively calculated over the P

Fungal Biodiversity From the Atlantic Forest With Bioactive Metabolites Against Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

Biodiversity offers a rich source of bioactive compounds for drug discovery. We isolated Aspergillus fumigatus from compost in the Atlantic Forest and found its extract active against Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. Two crude extracts, I06 and I75, were selected for further study. I06 reduced parasite burden and infection rates in human (THP-1) and murine (BMDM) macrophages, with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 1 µg/mL, similar to the reference drug pentamidine. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry identified extract components. I06-treated parasites showed morphological cha
