Tension-type headache in paediatric age.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this paper is to review the main topics about the management of paediatric tension-type headache. A Medline search was undertaken of all reports and reviews published between 1990 and 2010 using MeSH search terms 'tension-type headache (TTH), 'treatment' and 'children'. TTH is a very common disorder in childhood and adolescents. In many cases, the frequency and intensity of episodes may be likely to interfere with school and social activities. For this reason, a correct diagnosis and appropriate management of TTH are essential. A detailed history and proper examination,

Change mechanisms in EMG biofeedback training: cognitive changes underlying improvements in tension headache.

Forty-three college students suffering from recurrent tension headache were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback training conditions. Although all subjects were led to believe they were learning to decrease frontal EMG activity, actual feedback was contingent on decreased EMG activity for half of the subjects and increased EMG activity for the other half. Within these 2 groups, subjects also viewed bogus video displays designed to convince them they were achieving large (high success) or small (moderate success) reductions in EMG activity. Regardless of actual change

Dyssynergic defecation and biofeedback therapy.

Constipation caused by dyssynergic defecation is common and affects up to one half of patients with this disorder. It is possible to diagnose this problem through history, prospective stool diaries, and anorectal physiologic tests. Randomized controlled trials have now established that biofeedback therapy is not only efficacious but superior to other modalities and that the symptom improvement is caused by a change in underlying pathophysiology. Development of user friendly approaches to biofeedback therapy and use of home biofeedback programs will significantly enhance the adoption of this tr

Using hypnosis to help deaf children help themselves: report of two cases.

This is a report of deaf children who demonstrated the ability to quickly learn hypnotic skills and apply them effectively to the management of their problems. The children were taught hypnosis through American Sign Language, their preferred mode of communication. As with hypnosis with hearing children, we focused upon induction with fantasy and imaginative involvement, creation in imagination of a metaphor for, or imagery of, the desired outcome, and associated sense of pride (ego-strengthening), positive expectation, and teaching self-hypnosis to emphasize the importance of repeated, daily p

Visual improvement in an albinotic patient with an alteration of congenital nystagmus.

Biofeedback techniques were used to alter congenital nystagmus (CN) in an albino. In response to auditory cues, the patient was able to reduce the amplitude of the nystagmus by 50% or more. In response to a combination of auditory and visual cues, the patient was able to alter the waveform of the nystagmus in such a manner that progressively larger portions of each cycle of the nystagmus were spent with the eye relatively stationary. Presumably as a consequence of this alteration in waveform, the patient's visual acuity (VA) improved from 6/35 to 6/25. The results indicate that, although VA in

The Effect of Electromyographic Biofeedback Relaxation Training on Pain Catastrophizing and Fatigue Levels in Lung Cancer Patients Undergoing Combined Chemoradiotherapy.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Lung cancer patients undergoing combined chemoradiotherapy often experience pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and decreased quality of life. Among these, pain catastrophizing, as a negative cognitive pattern, can exacerbate symptom experience. Similarly, fatigue and sleep disturbances are also influenced by psychological and cognitive factors, yet conventional supportive care provides limited intervention at the psychological and cognitive levels. This study aims to investigate the impact of electromyographic biofeedback relaxation training on pain catastrophizing and fatigue

A "biofeedback" approach to the treatment of chronic polydipsia.

A novel behavioral method is described for the treatment of psychogenic polydipsia in a patient suffering from chronic schizophrenia. The patient was given feedback on serum sodium concentration, likely physical consequences, and the value of reducing fluid intake. An ABAB single-case design was used, with changes in sodium concentration (charted by the patient during the treatment phases) as the dependent variable. The patient showed substantially increased sodium concentration, which was maintained despite the withdrawal of feedback. This behavioral method appears promising in settings where

Does sonographic visual biofeedback before or during the second stage of labor improve outcomes? A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Effective pushing during the second stage of labor is critical for optimal birth outcomes, but many women-especially those under epidural analgesia-struggle with reduced pelvic sensation and pushing efficacy. Transperineal ultrasound is widely used to assess labor progression, and visual biofeedback has shown promise in improving physical and psychological outcomes in other fields. However, its application during labor remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study assesses the effect of sonographic visual biofeedback before and during labor on obstetric outcomes. METHOD: We perfor

Psychological interventions for migraine.

Migraine is a complex condition that imposes substantial epidemiological impact and social burden. In the past decade, innovative and targeted pharmacological preventive therapies have considerably improved the lives of people with migraine. A biopsychosocial model has been proposed to comprehensively explain migraine complexity, shedding light on the interconnections between emotional, psychological, social and biological factors, in contrast to a strict medical model. This modern view recognizes that relying solely on pharmacological treatment might not be sufficient, and that alternative tr

Postural Education in School-Aged Populations: Development and Usability Evaluation of a Mobile Biofeedback App (EduBack).

BACKGROUND: Postural education is crucial during childhood and adolescence, yet traditional approaches often lack engaging tools that promote awareness and behavioral change. Wearable technologies and real-time biofeedback systems offer new opportunities to support postural learning through immediate, embodied feedback. However, most existing systems focus on clinical rehabilitation, with few designed specifically for educational use. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to design, develop, and evaluate the usability and technical performance of EduBack, a mobile app that delivers real-time lumbar pos

A Comparison Between Pre-Sleep Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback and Electroencephalographic Biofeedback Training on Sleep in National Level Athletes with Sleep Disturbances.

The current study compared the effects of heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) and electroencephalographic biofeedback (EEG-BF) on sleep, mood, and reaction time. Fourteen highly trained male athletes with sleep disturbances participated in this randomised crossover study. Participants took part in HRV-BF and EEG-BF training, with each condition consisting of eight sessions over 15 days. Polysomnography (PSG) and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) were used to assess sleep quality, the profile of mood states (POMS) questionnaire to monitor mood, and reaction time to measure perfo

Home-based biofeedback speech treatment improves dysarthria in repeat-expansion SCAs.

CAG repeat-expansion spinocerebellar ataxias (CAG-SCAs) are genetically defined multisystemic degenerative diseases, resulting in motor symptoms including dysarthria with a substantial impact on daily living. Whilst speech therapy is widely recommended in ataxia, very limited evidence exists for its use. We evaluated the efficacy of a home-delivered, ataxia-tailored biofeedback-driven speech therapy in CAG-SCA in 16 individuals with SCA1, 2, 3, or 6. Treatment was delivered intensively over 20 days. Efficacy was evaluated by blinded ratings of intelligibility (primary) and acoustic measures (s

Facial taping as biofeedback to improve the outcomes of physical rehab in Bell's palsy: preliminary results of a randomized case-control study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of taping in association with Kabat rehabilitation to ameliorate the outcomes of Bell's palsy. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted on hospital-outbound patients. 20 patients over 18 years affected from Bell's palsy were recruited at the onset of the disease (< 5 days). Patients were simply randomized into two groups. Patients in group A underwent exclusively Kabat rehabilitation, while patients in group B were treated by combining facial taping and Kabat. Facial palsy severity was evaluated with ADS assessment at baseline (T0),

The Most Beautiful Man: An Integration of Hypnosis and Biofeedback for Depression and Dissociation.

Hypnosis and biofeedback techniques are evidence-based psychophysiological therapies that can be applied with a wide variety of medical and mental health disorders. Research shows efficacy for anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTDS), chronic pain, hypertension, fibromyalgia, and a host of other disorders. Hypnosis and biofeedback can also augment the effectiveness of psychotherapy. The author utilizes the case narrative of a 36-year-old woman, presenting with postpartum depression and dissociative features, to illustrate the integration of biofeedback training, physiological

The assessment and management of defecatory dysfunction: a critical appraisal.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the advances in diagnostic modalities and management options for defecatory dysfunction and highlight the areas in need of further research. RECENT FINDINGS: The diagnostic utility of high-resolution anorectal manometry (ARM), which has emerged as a promising tool for the diagnosis of defecatory dysfunction, appears to be questionable in differentiating disease from normal physiology. There also seems to be discrepancy between results of various tests of anorectal function in the diagnosis of defecatory dysfunction. New revisions in diagnostic criteria for defe

"Visual sensory trick" in patient with cervical dystonia.

Sensory tricks are clinical maneuvers that may partially relieve dystonic contractions. Any clinical maneuver that modulates afferent sensory and efferent motor pathways could be used as a sensory trick in patients with cervical dystonia. Although various sensory tricks have been described to reduce cervical dystonia, little is known about the exact mechanisms by which they operate. We report a case of cervical dystonia that was alleviated through the use of a visual-sensory trick. Our findings suggest that visual stimulation might be an effective sensory trick in cervical dystonia by compensa
