Severe asthma beyond bronchodilators: Emerging therapeutic approaches.

Asthma is characterized by reversible airway inflammation, obstruction, and structural remodeling, which lead to the eosinophils and lymphocytes accumulation at inflammation sites and the release of inflammatory cells, like mast cells and dendritic cells, from lungs' epithelial and smooth muscle cells that trigger the activation and release of cytokines and chemokines, attracting more cells and contributing to asthma development. Available pharmacological interventions, like bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory agents, are considered generally safe and effective to treat asthma, but many affe

Use of mixed cultures of biocontrol agents to control sheep nematodes.

Biological control is a promising non-chemical approach for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. Use of combinations of biocontrol agents have been reported to be an effective method to increase the efficacy of biological control effects. In this study, combinations of either two Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) or Clonostachys rosea (C. rosea) isolates and Bt+C. rosea isolates were evaluated in vitro in microtitre plates for their biocontrol activity on sheep nematodes. The Baermann technique was used to extract the surviving L3 larval stages of intestinal nematodes and counted unde

Phototoxicity of Ultraviolet-A against the Whitefly Bemisia tabaci and Its Compatibility with an Entomopathogenic Fungus and Whitefly Parasitoid.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation significantly affects insect life and, as a result, has been widely used to control different invertebrate pests. The current results demonstrate that when Bemisia tabaci first instar nymphs are exposed to UV-A light for 12, 24, 48, and 72 h, their developmental and biological parameters are negatively affected by UV-A exposure; the effect increased with an increase in exposure time. We hypothesized that UV-A light is compatible with other biological control agents. Results showed that when the entomopathogenic fungus Cordyceps fumosorosea was applied to third instar

Neurological aspects of biological and chemical terrorism: a review for neurologists.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urge physicians to become familiar with chemical and biological weapons. Preparedness among neurologists is especially important because several of these agents affect the nervous system. This article reviews 4 agents that have a history of military or terrorist use: cyanide poisons, organophosphate poisons, botulinum toxin, and anthrax. Cyanide and organophosphate poisons are characterized by dose-dependent impairment of neurological function with nonspecific symptoms such as headache or dizziness at one end of the spectrum and convulsions and co

Control of schistosomiasis by the selective competitive and predatory intervention of intermediate hosts: A mathematical modeling approach.

Schistosomiasis, a freshwater-borne neglected tropical disease, disproportionately affects impoverished communities mainly in the tropical regions. Transmission involves humans and intermediate host (IH) snails. This manuscript introduces a mathematical model to probe schistosomiasis dynamics and the role of non-host snail competitors and predators as biological control agents for IH snails. The numerical analyses include investigations into steady-state conditions and reproduction numbers associated with uncontrolled scenarios, as well as scenarios involving non-host snail competitors and/or

Evaluation of mycoparasitic Trichoderma atroviride and entomopathogenic Aspergillus niger as potential bioinsecticides against the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past three decades, dengue disease incidence has significantly increased worldwide, creating serious public health concerns. The principal mosquito vector, Aedes aegypti, exhibits resistance to commonly used insecticides, reducing the efficacy of vector control measures. Thus, the necessity for alternate strategies is critical. Using bioinsecticides such as entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) is one such strategy. This study details the evaluation of mycoparasitic Trichoderma atroviride and entomopathogenic Aspergillus niger against pyrethroid-resistant and pyrethroid-susceptib

Chromobacterium biopesticide overcomes insecticide resistance in malaria vector mosquitoes.

Vector mosquito control is an integral part of malaria control. The global emergence of insecticide resistance in malaria-transmitting Anophelines has become an impediment and has created an urgent need for novel mosquito control approaches. Here, we show that a biopesticide derived from the soil-dwelling bacterium Chromobacterium sp. Panama (Csp_P) kills insecticide-resistant Anopheles mosquitoes, regardless of their resistance mechanisms. In addition, sublethal dose of Csp_P acts as a synergist to now used chemical insecticides across multiple classes. Moreover, Csp_P reduces host-seeking be

Essential oils of Lavandula angustifolia and Thymus vulgaris as biocontrol agents: managing Dactylopius opuntiae infestation and associated bacterial infections.

Dactylopius opuntiae, the invasive cactus cochineal, is a major pest threatening Opuntia ficus-indica cultivation, especially in arid regions. This study assesses the insecticidal and antibacterial properties of essential oils (EOs) from Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) and Thymus vulgaris (thyme) as eco-friendly biocontrol agents. Laboratory (in vitro) and greenhouse (in vivo) tests were performed using emulsified EOs at 1%, 5%, and 10% concentrations. In vitro tests showed that lavender EO caused 95.0 ± 3.0% mortality in nymphs and adult females of D. opuntiae at 10% after 8 days, with an L

Biocontrol Methods for the Management of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in Legumes: A Review.

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is an economically damaging fungal pathogen that causes Sclerotinia stem rot in legumes, producing enormous yield losses. This pathogen is difficult to control due to its wide host spectrum and ability to produce sclerotia, which are resistant bodies that can remain active for long periods under harsh environmental conditions. Here, the biocontrol methods for the management of S. sclerotiorum in legumes are reviewed. Bacillus strains, which synthesized lipopeptides and volatile organic compounds, showed high efficacies in soybean plants, whereas the highest efficacies

MBORS: Mosquito vector Biocontrol Ontology and Recommendation System.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Mosquito vectors are disease-causing insects, responsible for various life-threatening vector-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, malaria, chikungunya, and lymphatic filariasis. In practice, synthetic insecticides are used to control the mosquito vector, but, the continuous usage of synthetic insecticides is toxic to human health resulting in communicable diseases. Non-toxic biocontrol agents such as bacteria, fungus, plants, and mosquito densoviruses play a vital role in controlling mosquitoes. Community awareness of mosquito biocontrol agents is required to control ve

Antagonistic potential and biological control mechanisms of Pseudomonas strains against banded leaf and sheath blight disease of maize.

Rhizoctonia solani, the causal agent of banded leaf and sheath blight (BL&SB), poses a significant threat to maize and various crops globally. The increasing concerns surrounding the environmental and health impacts of chemical fungicides have encouraged intensified concern in the development of biological control agents (BCAs) as eco-friendly alternatives. In this study, we explored the potential of 22 rhizobacteria strains (AS1-AS22) isolates, recovered from the grasslands of the Pithoragarh region in the Central Himalayas, as effective BCAs against BL&SB disease. Among these strains, two Ps

The clinical and pathological histology efficacy of biological therapy for severe asthma with a phenotype of type 2 inflammation - systematic review.

Asthma is a complex, chronic inflammatory condition of the airways that comes in many forms. Because different inflammatory processes drive it, we can generally categorize asthma into two main types: type 2 inflammatory asthma and non-type 2 inflammatory asthma. Type 2 inflammation is usually the culprit in most folks grappling with severe asthma. There is a noticeable difference in the treatment approaches for different phenotypes of severe asthma. The main reason is that patients suffering from type 2 inflammatory asthma can respond well to treatment with biological agents. Several well-veri

Bioterrorism.

Bioterrorism is the deliberate release of viruses, bacteria, toxins, or fungi with the goal of causing panic, mass casualties, or severe economic disruption. From 1981 to 2018, there were 37 bioterrorist attacks worldwide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists anthrax, botulism, plague, smallpox, tularemia, and viral hemorrhagic fevers as category A agents that are the greatest risk to national security. An emerging infectious disease (e.g., novel respiratory virus) may also be used as a biological agent. Clinicians may be the first to recognize a bioterrorism-related illn

Methylobacterium spp. and biological control of phytopathogenic Fusarium spp.

The biocontrol potential of Methylobacterium spp. against key phytopathogenic fungi was evaluated using in vitro antagonism assays and confined germination bioassays. Across 40 Methylobacterium isolates, inhibitory activity was highly variable and strain-dependent. Fusarium graminearum (UAMH 3329) was the most consistently suppressed pathogen; however, only M. thiocyanatum (NBRC 103124) and M. aminovorans (LMG 21752) produced significant inhibition (>30%, p < 0.05) across all three Fusarium species tested. Growth suppression was enhanced on nutrient-minimum agar amended with cell-free bacteria

Tocilizumab in pediatric rheumatology: the clinical experience.

During the last two decades, clinical use of novel biological therapy has led to increased mechanistic understanding of complex rheumatological diseases. Conversely, basic and translational studies have led to development of new and varied therapeutic agents. These new medications which "target" specific steps in one or more immune pathways have the potential to control disease symptoms, improve quality of life and long-term prognosis, and perhaps in some, restore immunological tolerance. Use of these agents in clinical trials, combined with post-marketing surveillance, has revealed both the b

Advancements in the treatment of psoriasis: role of biologic agents.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of biologic agents as antipsoriatic therapy. SUMMARY: Mild psoriasis can generally be managed with topical therapy. Moderate-to-severe psoriasis has traditionally been treated with systemic therapies such as cyclosporine, methotrexate, retinoids, and phototherapy (ultraviolet B, psoralen plus ultraviolet A). The treatments for moderate-to-severe psoriasis often do not meet patient and physician expectations because of significant side effects (e.g., organ toxicity, skin cancer), lack of durable efficacy, and inconvenient administration schedules (e.g., daily do

Host range of Triatoma virus does not extend to Aedes aegypti and Apis mellifera.

Vector control is the most effective method to prevent transmission of Chagas disease. Control is mostly made through chemical insecticides although they have negative impact on wild pollinators, such as bees. Reducing pesticide use through biological alternatives could minimize the damage to these beneficial insects. Triatoma virus (TrV) is a pathogen able to kill triatomines and thus a valid candidate to be used as biological control agent. In this study we evaluate the capacity of TrV to infect an important beneficial insect (Apis mellifera) as well as a plague insect (Aedes aegypti). Resul
