Why are triploid quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) common?

PREMISE: Quaking aspen is a clonal tree species that has mixed ploidy, often with high relative abundance of both diploids and triploids but no haploids or tetraploids. Triploids typically have low fertility, leaving their occurrence apparently unlikely from an evolutionary perspective, unless they provide a "triploid bridge" to generating higher-fitness tetraploids-which are not observed in this species. This study focused on how triploidy can be maintained in quaking aspen. METHODS: A computational model was used to simulate gamete production, sexual reproduction, asexual reproduction, pare

Towards an ecology of protective coloration.

The strategies underlying different forms of protective coloration are well understood but little attention has been paid to the ecological, life-history and behavioural circumstances under which they evolve. While some comparative studies have investigated the ecological correlates of aposematism, and background matching, the latter particularly in mammals, few have examined the ecological correlates of other types of protective coloration. Here, we first outline which types of defensive coloration strategies may be exhibited by the same individual; concluding that many protective coloration

Toxin expression in snake venom evolves rapidly with constant shifts in evolutionary rates.

Key innovations provide ecological opportunity by enabling access to new resources, colonization of new environments, and are associated with adaptive radiation. The most well-known pattern associated with adaptive radiation is an early burst of phenotypic diversification. Venoms facilitate prey capture and are widely believed to be key innovations leading to adaptive radiation. However, few studies have estimated their evolutionary rate dynamics. Here, we test for patterns of adaptive evolution in venom gene expression data from 52 venomous snake species. By identifying shifts in tempo and mo

Stepwise shifts underlie evolutionary trends in morphological complexity of the mammalian vertebral column.

A fundamental concept in evolutionary biology is that life tends to become more complex through geologic time, but empirical examples of this phenomenon are controversial. One debate is whether increasing complexity is the result of random variations, or if there are evolutionary processes which actively drive its acquisition, and if these processes act uniformly across clades. The mammalian vertebral column provides an opportunity to test these hypotheses because it is composed of serially-repeating vertebrae for which complexity can be readily measured. Here we test seven competing hypothese

Beyond replicator dynamics: From frequency to density dependent models of evolutionary games.

Game theoretic models of evolution such as the Hawk-Dove game assume that individuals gain fitness (which is a proxy of the per capita population growth rate) in pair-wise contests only. These models assume that the equilibrium distribution of phenotypes involved (e.g., Hawks and Doves) in the population is given by the Hardy-Weinberg law, which is based on instantaneous, random pair formation. On the other hand, models of population dynamics do not consider pairs, newborns are produced by singles, and interactions between phenotypes or species are described by the mass action principle. This

Epidemiological, evolutionary, and economic determinants of eradication tails.

Despite modern medical interventions, infectious diseases continue to generate huge socio-economic losses. The benefits of eradicating a disease are therefore high. While successful with smallpox and rinderpest, many other eradication attempts have failed. Eradications require huge and costly efforts, which can be sustained only if sufficient progress can be achieved. While initial successes are usually obtained more easily, progress often becomes harder as a disease becomes rare in the eradication endgame. A long eradication tail of slowly decreasing incidence levels can frustrate eradication

Evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds.

The first generation of species-selective phenoxy herbicides went into use at the same time as modern antibiotics, chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides and new fungicides and rodenticides. No resistance has appeared to the still widely used phenoxy herbicides. However, resistance has developed, in many isolated areas around the world, to s-triazine herbicides and, in a few small areas, to bipyridillium herbicides. The parameters of population genetics that govern herbicide resistance and those that govern resistance of microorganisms and fungi to other xenobiotics are the same: generations, se

Microbes as Key Players During Evolution: I From the Beginnings to the Appearance of Eukaryotes.

Life on Earth originated in the Precambrian, around 4 billion years ago. This review focuses on microbes (viruses, bacteria, archaea) which developed in these prehistoric times and their roles during the later evolution of protists (eukaryotes). Among the different theories of life evolution, the author favors the theory of the RNA world as having been first. Over the past few decades, new molecular biological technologies and findings have changed the paradigm of mutation and selection as being the main driving force of biological evolution. Instead, microbes and microbe-derived genetic eleme

The convergent evolution of the pelvic suction cup: A unique key innovation in spiny-finned fishes.

Key innovations open ecological opportunities and can redirect evolutionary trajectories. In spiny-finned fishes, the pelvic suction cup-a fused adhesive structure formed from the pelvic fins and supported by a modified girdle-appears to be one such trait. Using a novel 960-species phylogeny spanning 940 exons and 67 newly sequenced snailfish genomes, we show that the suction cup evolved independently three times across lineages separated by over 100 million years. By enabling adhesion in high-energy habitats such as tide pools and waterfalls, the suction cup set the stage for body depression

Toward Next-Generation Teratology: Understanding Developmental Vulnerability Through Evolutionary and Comparative Genomics.

Teratology, the study of congenital anomalies, has developed from a descriptive discipline into a mechanistic science focused on the proximate causes of developmental defects, meaning how such anomalies arise during development. However, a comprehensive understanding requires not only this mechanistic insight but also an evolutionary perspective on why developmental systems are susceptible to disruption, often following recurring yet diverse patterns. To better grasp this susceptibility, it is important to consider evolutionary contexts, including concepts such as evolutionary trade-offs, envi

Evolutionary dynamics of the arthropod molting machinery.

Exoskeletons define arthropods, providing support for segmented bodies and appendages while protecting against environmental stress and predation. Although ubiquitous, this evolutionarily variable feature has enabled arthropods to occupy diverse lifestyles and ecological niches, contributing to their unrivaled diversity. Because the chitinous cuticle is rigid, exoskeletons must be periodically shed and replaced as animals grow. Arthropods therefore develop through discrete molts, with conserved phases that progress from pre-molt preparation to ecdysis and post-molt maturation. These are tightl

Marine flatworms as windows into the evolution of bilaterian neuropeptide signalling.

The evolutionary origin(s) of neuropeptide signalling is still largely unknown. It has been hypothesised that signal transmission via neuropeptides played a crucial role in the regulation of nervous systems in the bilaterian ancestor. Identification, expression and functional analyses of neuropeptides and their receptors across different taxonomic groups are important for better understanding the origin(s) of bilaterian neuropeptide signalling. An example is flatworms belonging to the Platyhelminthes (spiralian protostomes) and Xenacoelomorpha (sister to all Bilateria or sister to Ambulacraria

What can language creation tell us about language evolution?

How did the languages we use today come about? One way to make this problem more tractable is to think about language, not as a single entity but as a compilation of properties. Biological evolution may have resulted in the creation of some properties of language. However, cultural evolution, which relies on changes introduced by successive generations of users and is quicker than biological evolution, may also be responsible for the introduction of properties into language. Although it is difficult to distinguish linguistic properties introduced through biological evolution from those introdu

Metabolomics-Guided Genomic Comparisons Reveal Convergent Evolution of Hibernation Genes in Mammals.

Hibernation exists in several unrelated mammalian lineages, allowing animals to survive extreme 0environmental conditions through profound physiological shifts, including reduced metabolic rate, heart rate, respiration, and body temperature. These physiological shifts allow hibernators to rely solely on fat reserves, simultaneously avoiding the adverse effects of prolonged immobility seen in nonhibernating species. Although research on individual species has highlighted key aspects of these adaptations, the genetic basis of hibernation across mammals remains poorly understood. Synthesizing bot

The Evolution of the Optimization of Cognitive and Social Functions in the Cerebellum and Thereby the Rise of Homo sapiens Through Cumulative Culture.

The evolution of the prominent role of the cerebellum in the development of composite tools, and cumulative culture, leading to the rise of Homo sapiens is examined. Following Stout and Hecht's (2017) detailed description of stone-tool making, eight key repetitive involvements of the cerebellum are highlighted. These key cerebellar learning involvements include the following: (1) optimization of cognitive-social control, (2) prediction (3) focus of attention, (4) automaticity of smoothness, appropriateness, and speed of movement and cognition, (5) refined movement and social cognition, (6) lea

Human adaptations to diet: Biological and cultural coevolution.

Modern humans evolved in Africa some 200,000 years ago, and since then, human populations have expanded and diversified to occupy a broad range of habitats and use different subsistence modes. This has resulted in different adaptations, such as differential responses to diseases and different abilities to digest or tolerate certain foods. The shift from a subsistence strategy based on hunting and gathering during the Palaeolithic to a lifestyle based on the consumption of domesticated animals and plants in the Neolithic can be considered one of the most important dietary transitions of Homo sa

A unified ILP framework for core ancestral genome reconstruction problems.

MOTIVATION: One of the key computational problems in comparative genomics is the reconstruction of genomes of ancestral species based on genomes of extant species. Since most dramatic changes in genomic architectures are caused by genome rearrangements, this problem is often posed as minimization of the number of genome rearrangements between extant and ancestral genomes. The basic case of three given genomes is known as the genome median problem. Whole-genome duplications (WGDs) represent yet another type of dramatic evolutionary events and inspire the reconstruction of preduplicated ancestra

The cultural transmission and evolution of egalitarianism.

The target article should help productively orient studies of egalitarianism in human societies. However, it ignores the role of cultural transmission and evolution in the maintenance and transformation of the socio-ecological processes supporting egalitarian behavior. Each of the proposed processes are manifest and reproduced through culturally mediated behavior, as is made visible through research on children's social learning and inter-group interaction.

Ocular and extraocular expression of opsins reveals evolutionary trends underlying visual and non-visual functions in bivalves (Pteriomorphia).

Opsin proteins are central to photoreception and have diversified extensively to support both visual and non-visual functions in animals. While the molecular conservation is striking, the evolutionary pathways that shaped opsin diversity, particularly in relation to visual and extraocular roles, remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we examined opsin expression in Pteriomorphia, a diverse group of mostly sessile marine bivalves with multiple photoreceptor systems and ecologies. We generated transcriptomes for 12 species, including eyed and eyeless adults, and analysed published RNA-se

Mitonuclear dynamics in unisexual vertebrates.

Sex and mitochondria are inextricably linked in the eukaryotic tree of life, a confounding situation given the uniparental inheritance of mitochondria and the biparental inheritance that sexual reproduction entails. Unisexual vertebrate lineages, which arise via hybridization and asexually pass on their genetic material to clonal descendants, provide a unique opportunity to study mitochondrial evolution without potentially confounding effects of sex. Hybridity and clonality set unisexual vertebrates apart from other vertebrates and establish a distinct genetic environment that shapes their evo
