Trypanosoma brucei is a unicellular eukaryote that causes the deadly human African trypanosomiasis ('sleeping sickness') in humans. The parasite has a complicated lifestyle, it developmentally changes aspects of its mitochondrial function as it alternates from forms in the tsetse fly to forms adapted for life in the human bloodstream. Sodium transport into human placental brush border membrane vesicles was examined in the presence of an outwardly directed sodium gradient leading to the formation of an intravesicular negative charge. 22Na entered the vesicles in a time dependent fashion. Cryptomys hottentotus has no access to dietary or endogenous sources of cholecalciferol (D3). Regulation of Cl- and HCO3- secretion by intramural cholinergic neurons was investigated in guinea pig antrum in vitro. Sheet preparations composed of the mucosa and the submucosa were mounted between Ussing chambers and bathed with buffer-free solution on the luminal surface and with HCO3(-)-CO2 solution on the serosal side. Short-circuit current (Isc), unidirectional fluxes of 36Cl and 22Na, and the luminal alkalinization rate (JOHSL) were determined. Electrical stimulation of the preparations elicited increases in both JOHSL and Isc, which were inhibited by tetrodotoxin (TTX) and atropine.

Mineralocorticoid hormones stimulate Na+ absorption and K+ secretion by the cortical collecting tubule.
