[Selected biomarkers of orthostatic intolerance].

Orthostatic intolerance (OI) is defined as a group of diseases which symptoms are typically manifested in a standing position. These symptoms result from cerebral hypoperfusion and disappear in the supine position. We include postural orthostatic intolerance syndrome (POTS), orthostatic hypotension (OH) and vasovagal orthostatic syncope in this group of diseases. Each of them have similar clinical presentation (blurred vision, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headaches, fatigue). However, they vary from each other in biochemical, autonomic and hemodynamic characteristics. The aim of the work is to

Biomarkers in congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Monitoring of hormone replacement therapy represents a major challenge in the management of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). In the absence of clear guidance and standardised monitoring strategies, there is no consensus among clinicians regarding the relevance of various biochemical markers used in practice, leading to wide variability in their application and interpretation. In this review, we summarise the published evidence on biochemical monitoring of CAH. We discuss temporal variations of the most commonly measured biomarkers throughout the day, the interrelationship between differen

Immunologic biomarkers for bacterial meningitis.

Meningitis is defined as the inflammation of the meninges that is most often caused by various bacterial and viral pathogens, and is associated with high rates of mortality and morbidity. Early detection of bacterial meningitis is essential to appropriate antibiotic therapy. Alterations in immunologic biomarkers levels have been considered the diagnostic approach in medical laboratories for the identifying of infections. The early increasing immunologic mediators such as cytokines and acute phase proteins (APPs) during bacterial meningitis have made they significant indicators for laboratory d

Potential biomarkers of atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory skin disease with a wide range of heterogeneity. Accurate biomarkers or predictors are the keys to instructing personalized tailored precise treatment. The development of technology such as transcriptomics, genomics, and proteomics provides novel insights into the possibility to find potential biomarkers. Meanwhile, emerging minimally invasive methods such as tape stripping were used to reveal different profiles of patients' skin without biopsy. Several potential biomarkers or predictors have been found. In this review, we summarized

NAFLD: Mechanisms, Treatments, and Biomarkers.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), recently renamed metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), is one of the most common causes of liver diseases worldwide. NAFLD is growing in parallel with the obesity epidemic. No pharmacological treatment is available to treat NAFLD, specifically. The reason might be that NAFLD is a multi-factorial disease with an incomplete understanding of the mechanisms involved, an absence of accurate and inexpensive imaging tools, and lack of adequate non-invasive biomarkers. NAFLD consists of the accumulation of excess lipids in the liver, causing lipoto

Salivary biomarkers and esophageal disorders.

Saliva is a complex physiologic fluid that contains an abundance of biological analytes, or biomarkers. Recent research has shown that these biomarkers may be able to convey the physiologic health of a person. Work has been done linking derangements in these salivary biomarkers to a wide variety of pathologic disorders ranging from oncologic diseases to atopic conditions. The specific area of interest for this review paper is esophageal disorders. Particularly because the diagnosis and management of esophageal disorders often includes invasive testing such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy, prolon

Serum biomarkers for liver fibrosis.

Liver fibrosis is a common pathway in most chronic liver diseases, characterized by excessive extracellular matrix accumulation. Without treatment, fibrosis will ultimately result in cirrhosis, portal hypertension, and even liver failure. It is considered that liver fibrosis is reversible while cirrhosis is not, making it significant to diagnose and evaluate liver fibrogenesis timely. As the gold standard, liver biopsy is imperfect due to its invasiveness and sampling error. Therefore, attempts at uncovering noninvasive tests have become a hot topic in liver fibrosis. Nowadays, as an important

Biomarkers in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review highlights the key studies investigating various types of biomarkers in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). RECENT FINDINGS: Several proteomic and metabolomic studies have been undertaken in both human DMD patients and animal models of DMD that have identified potential biomarkers in DMD. Although there have been a number of proteomic and metabolomic studies that have identified various potential biomarkers in DMD, more definitive studies still need to be undertaken in DMD patients to firmly correlate these biomarkers with diagnosis, disease progression, and moni

Biological Biomarkers in Respiratory Diseases.

In recent years, personalized or precision medicine has made effective inroads into the management of diseases, including respiratory diseases. The route to implementing this approach must invariably start with the identification and validation of biological biomarkers that are closely related to the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of respiratory patients. In this respect, biological biomarkers of greater or lesser reliability have been identified for most respiratory diseases and disease classes, and a large number of studies are being conducted in the search for new indicators. The aim o

Novel Biomarkers in Kidney Transplantation.

Rejection remains a major cause of renal allograft failure. Current diagnostic studies, interrogating the blood or urine, lack the sensitivity and specificity for early detection of rejection. Transplant kidney biopsy remains the gold standard, but is associated with morbidity. Advances in understanding the immunobiology of rejection have led to multiple, novel diagnostic tests facilitating non-invasive, earlier detection of renal allograft rejection.

Missed abortion with negative biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: First-trimester bleeding and pregnancy loss are common reasons for presentation to emergency departments. Women of childbearing age frequently receive urine and serum pregnancy tests, which are thought to be reliable markers of pregnancy. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 34-year-old woman who presented to an emergency department with vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain and was found to have negative urine and serum markers of pregnancy. A transvaginal ultrasound detected non-viable fetal tissue and the patient underwent an uncomplicated spontaneous abortion. CONCLUSIONS:

Blood biomarkers of peripheral neuropathy.

Traditionally, neurophysiology is the primary diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in peripheral neuropathy clinical practice; however, it may lack responsiveness in the context of slowly progressive neuropathies and where there is significant axonal damage. The development of ultrasensitive platforms for measuring serum proteins at the lower limit of detection of traditional ELISA techniques has transformed the field of blood biomarkers of peripheral neuropathy. A variety of blood biomarkers have been identified from inflammatory cytokines and apokines in diabetic neuropathy through to neuron-

Salivary Biomarkers in Lung Cancer.

A very low percentage of lung cancer (LC) cases are discovered at an early and treatable stage of the disease, leading to an abysmally low 5-year survival rate. This underscores the immediate necessity for improved diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive biomarkers for LC. Biopsied lung tissue, blood, and plasma are common sources used for LC diagnosis and monitoring of the disease. A growing number of studies have reported saliva to be a useful biological sample for early and noninvasive detection of oral and systemic diseases. Nevertheless, salivary biomarker discovery remains underresearched

Biomarkers and Periodontal Regenerative Approaches.

The ultimate goal in periodontal therapy is the complete re-establishment of the lost tissues. Dental researchers and clinicians are continuously working to develop current therapeutic techniques and technologies that can regenerate damaged periodontal tissues. Predicting the outcome of the treatment is a challenging endeavor, because a variety of local and systemic variables can affect the success of the applied regenerative therapy. To real-time monitor the biological changes during periodontitis or after periodontal treatment, various biomarkers have been studied in periodontology. This art

Protein Biomarkers for COPD Outcomes.

COPD is a clinically heterogeneous syndrome characterized by injury to airways, airspaces, and lung vasculature and usually caused by tobacco smoke and/or air pollution exposure. COPD is also independently associated with nonpulmonary comorbidities (eg, cardiovascular disease) and malignancies (eg, GI, bladder), suggesting a role for systemic injury. Since not all those with exposure develop COPD, there has been a search for plasma and lung biomarkers that confer increased cross-sectional and longitudinal risk. This search typically focuses on clinically relevant COPD outcomes such as FEV1, FE

Insights of rheumatoid arthritis biomarkers.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, autoimmune connective tissue disease. In addition to joint involvement, extra-articular changes and organ complications also occur in the course of the disease. Untreated disease leads to disability and premature death. Therefore, it is important to recognise and begin treatment early. Based on the presence of rheumatoid factor and antibodies against citrullinated peptides, we can distinguish two forms of the disease: seropositive and seronegative. Research continues to elucidate the mechanisms of the onset of the disease, as well as to uncover factors that i

Biomarkers in critical care nutrition.

The goal of nutrition support is to provide the substrates required to match the bioenergetic needs of the patient and promote the net synthesis of macromolecules required for the preservation of lean mass, organ function, and immunity. Contemporary observational studies have exposed the pervasive undernutrition of critically ill patients and its association with adverse clinical outcomes. The intuitive hypothesis is that optimization of nutrition delivery should improve ICU clinical outcomes. It is therefore surprising that multiple large randomized controlled trials have failed to demonstrat
