Many insects have a pair of claws on the tip of each foot (tarsus and pretarsus). The movement of the pretarsal claws is mediated by a long apodeme that originates from the claw retractor muscles in the femur. It is generally accepted that the pulling of the apodeme by the muscles flexes the claws to engage with a rough surface of a substrate, and the flexed claws return to their initial position by passive elastic forces within the tarso-pretarsal joint. We found that each tibia of the tenebrionid beetle Zophobas atratus had a chordal elastic organ that tied the apodeme to the distal end of t

Whole-body stiffness in fishes has important consequences for swimming mode, speed and efficiency, but the contribution of vertebral column stiffness to whole-body stiffness is unclear. In our opinion, this lack of clarity is due in part to the lack of studies that have measured both in vitro mechanical properties of the vertebral column as well as in vivo vertebral kinematics in the same species. Some lack of clarity may also come from real variation in the mechanical role of the vertebral column across species. Previous studies, based on either mechanics or kinematics alone, suggest species-

PURPOSE: To evaluate the physical properties of urethral catheters that are predictive of ease of placement and risk of urethral trauma: Stiffness, buckling, and friction forces.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven Bard Lubri-Sil and 10 Kendall Dover 16F Foley catheters were tested using a linear motion stage driven by a stepper motor with a resolution of 5 microns/step or by hand. Force was measured at a sampling rate of 5 Hz with a Wagner FDIX digital force gauge. Friction force was measured by pulling each Foley catheter at a rate of 2.5 mm/s through a 15.6F hole drilled in 36-mm thick biologic

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: The load acting on the limbs and the load distribution between fore- and hindlimbs while performing specific dressage exercises lack objective assessment.
HYPOTHESIS: The greater a horse's level of collection, the more load is shifted to the rear and that during the passage the vertical load on the limbs increases in relation to the accentuated vertical movement of the centre of mass.
METHODS: Back and limb kinematics, vertical ground reaction force and time parameters of each limb were measured in 6 Grand Prix dressage horses performing on an instrumented tread

The kinematic patterns of defense turning behavior in freely behaving specimens of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii were investigated with the aid of a video-analysis system. Movements of the body and all pereiopods, except the chelipeds, were analyzed. Because this behavior approximates to a rotation in place, this analysis extends previous studies on straight and curve walking in crustaceans. Specimens of P. clarkii responded to a tactile stimulus on a walking leg by turning accurately to face the source of the stimulation. Angular velocity profiles of the movement of the animal's carapace s

Knowledge of the normal functional behavior and mechanical properties of the vertebral column is important to understand the pathogenesis of back lesions, to identify the clinical manifestations of back pain, and to ensure a rational approach to physical therapy. The purpose of this article is to present a synthesis of in vivo and in vitro data obtained from different but complementary investigations. Presently, in vivo studies are limited; few gait-specific kinematic and electromyographic investigations are in process. Higher stresses to reach the maximal range of intervertebral motion can be

A method of generating in situ shock wave-inertial microbubble interaction by a modified electrohydraulic shock wave lithotripter is proposed and tested in vitro. An annular brass ellipsoidal reflector (thickness = 28 mm) that can be mounted on the aperture rim of a Dornier XL-1 lithotripter was designed and fabricated. This ring reflector shares the same foci with the XL-1 reflector, but is 15 mm short in major axis. Thus, a small portion of the spherical shock wave, generated by a spark discharge at the first focus (F1) of the reflector, is reflected and diffracted by the ring reflector, pro

Skeletal fragility in postmenopausal osteoporosis is not due solely to reduction in bone mass. This fact explains some of the overlap in bone mineral measurements observed between patients who are fracturing and age- and sex-matched normals who are not. Changes in skeletal architecture and bone remodeling occur with age which can account for some of the fragility. These changes are exaggerated in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis who are suffering spine fractures. Three abnormalities have been described by histomorphometric methods which can account for skeletal fragility out of propor

Transient vibrations caused by heel strike and travelling vertically through the body have been monitored using accelerometers taped to the skin. A correction for skin movement based on the transmissibility function is described. The average velocity between the foot and the head for the heel-strike transient is 220 m/s. This velocity is greatest in the legs, 610 m/s, and least in the spine, 90 m/s. Shock absorption occurs mainly in the legs and to a lesser degree in the spine.

Five-axis machine tools exhibit pose-dependent structural dynamics, but repeated full finite element reconstruction across the workspace is computationally inefficient. We developed a parametric finite element workflow in ANSYS APDL for a five-axis machine-tool analog specimen. The structure was divided into six modules; regular regions were sweep-meshed and irregular regions were represented with quadratic SOLID186 elements using nominal element sizes of 20, 10, and 5 mm. Bearing, ball screw-nut, and linear guideway-slider joints were represented by equivalent springs. Twelve screw-nut and gu

Tendon degeneration and tendinopathy are common musculoskeletal disorders characterized by chronic pain, impaired function, and structural changes within the tendon. A cascade of pathological changes appears due to several risk factors such as ageing, overuse, obesity, or specific medications. Among these changes are collagen disorganization, neovascularization, altered extracellular matrix composition, and changes in cellular components. Recent studies have highlighted the role of tenocyte apoptosis, matrix metalloproteinase activity, and mechanical stress in the progression of tendinopathy.

The recognition of exercises using skeletal pose sequences is a significant fitness technology, rehabilitation monitoring, and sports analytics. Nevertheless, the current practices tend to ignore the basic biomechanical processes of human motion. This paper presents a Biomechanical-Aware Temporal Learning (BATL), framework that incorporates human kinematic constraints and deep temporal model. The method takes into account three biomechanical limitations objects consisting of joint angle consistency, velocity smoothness, and bone length stability that are not explicitly coded but rather acquire

Uncontrolled Manifold (UCM) analysis separates the variability of multi-joint motion into a part that affects the task goal (task-relevant) and a part that does not (task-irrelevant), using the geometric relationship-the task Jacobian-between joint motion and task outcome. The resulting partition has been interpreted as evidence of neural control strategies that stabilize task goals while permitting flexibility in execution. UCM is conventionally reported as time-averaged variance indices, and this time-averaging step discards the temporal structure of movement variability. Using a three-joint

INTRODUCTION: fractures of the proximal phalanx of the hallux are among the most common forefoot injuries and are of significant clinical relevance due to their impact on gait biomechanics. These fractures may vary according to the mechanism of injury, the degree of articular involvement, and the associated soft tissue damage. Several therapeutic options are available, including conservative treatment and surgical management using different techniques and implants. Therefore, a review of the English and Spanish language literature published over the last 30 years regarding these fractures was

Humans navigate crowded environments by anticipating others' movements. When such mutual anticipation fails, this may result in collisions or near-collisions. Previous research on mutual anticipation in collision avoidance has highlighted the importance of kinematic information. However, it remains unclear how full-body kinematics support mutual anticipation in truly interactive near-collision avoidance scenarios. We introduce cross-recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA) as a novel method to quantify the degree of mutual hesitation (i.e., spatiotemporal overlap between walkers) in near-coll
