Consumption of Toxoplasma gondii contaminated pork is a major risk factor for human infection. We thus conducted a cross-sectional survey on the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in a representative sample of slaughter pigs from throughout Serbia and examined the influence of farm biosecurity-related risk factors on infection. In addition, direct detection of the parasite (by mouse bioassay) or its DNA was performed in the hearts of a subset of seropositive sows. The overall seroprevalence in the sample of 825 pigs as determined by the modified agglutination test (MAT) was 16.5%. Older age

BACKGROUND: Many low-income countries have a human population with a high number of cattle owners depending on their livestock for food and income. Infectious diseases threaten the health and production of cattle, affecting both the farmers and their families as well as other actors in often informal value chains. Many infectious diseases can be prevented by good biosecurity. The objectives of this study were to describe herd management and biosecurity routines with potential impact on the prevalence of infectious diseases, and to estimate the burden of infectious diseases in Ugandan cattle he

The International Regulations for transport of infectious substances, including diagnostic specimens, are based on the United Nations Model Regulations and are the standard for transport by all means of transportation including air transport; the International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulation specifically addresses air shipment. In 2005 and 2006 there were major improvements in the procedures for shipping infectious substances. These substances are divided into Category A, which includes primarily cultures of the more pathogenic agents and Category B, all the other substances. Categ

Freshwater amphipods of the genus Gammarus are important trophic components of aquatic ecosystems and are increasingly considered a potential bioresource for aquaculture. However, their role in the maintenance and transmission of infectious agents remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the presence of major crustacean and fish pathogens in Gammarus lacustris populations from Kazakhstan and characterized associated viral communities using metagenomic sequencing. Six pooled samples collected from freshwater ecosystems across Kazakhstan were screened using PCR and RT-PCR assays targeting

Biosecurity is essential to protecting cattle health and maintaining continuity of business during high-consequence disease events, yet adoption of preparedness measures remains uneven across the beef supply chain. Using foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) as a motivating case, we examine how Colorado cattle-industry stakeholders define practical biosecurity and what lessons support preparedness before an emergency. Data were collected through 12 focus groups and 18 individual interviews with 75 stakeholders across nine cattle-industry sectors, followed by four cross-sector workshops with 56 particip

The indiscriminate use of antimicrobials in food-producing animals is a major contributor to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a global One Health challenge that threatens the interconnected health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. Hence, this study conducted to assess the association between farm-level biosecurity practices and antimicrobial use in commercial poultry farms in Bangladesh. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 331 poultry farms (broiler: 113, layer: 103, Sonali: 115) across six districts from September to December 2021. A directed acyclic graph informed variable selection an

Coronaviruses (CoVs) are widespread RNA viruses infecting a broad range of avian and mammalian hosts. Although gammacoronaviruses and deltacoronaviruses (DCoVs) are common in wild birds, their presence in Eurasian passerines remains poorly understood. We screened 243 birds (35 species) at migratory stopover sites in Slovenia (2020-2021) using pan-coronavirus RT-PCR. Coronavirus RNA was detected only in four Eurasian Tree Sparrows (Passer montanus). Whole-genome sequencing yielded genomes of 26,017-26,018 bp with high internal conservation (99.95-99.98% identity). Phylogenetic analysis revealed

Appropriate on-farm implementation of biosecurity and animal health practices is crucial for the prevention of disease introduction, early disease detection, and emergency animal disease (EAD) preparedness. For the pig industry in Australia, this is particularly important given the increasing risk of African swine fever (ASF) due to ongoing outbreaks in neighbouring regions. This study investigated attitudes and behaviours of pig owners and producers from New South Wales (NSW), Australia, around farm biosecurity, to identify gaps and barriers in biosecurity knowledge and implementation, and be

Sheep scab causes economic losses and animal welfare problems and has proven difficult to control in the UK. Research has highlighted the importance of developing place-based approaches to understanding and controlling sheep scab. This paper builds on this literature through introducing the concept of marginality in the case study of managing sheep scab on the island of Lewis and Harris in the Scottish Western Isles. The paper also proposes steps for developing a place-based understanding of biosecurity. The research draws on interviews and workshops with crofters analysed using thematic analy

Zoonotic bacterial infections are a health hazard for people who are in regular contact with livestock at the farm level. Improved biosecurity can limit zoonotic pathogen transmission within farms. The aim of this review was to summarize the effectiveness of farm-level biosecurity interventions in reducing bacterial transmission from animals to people who lived, worked in or visited farms. A systematic literature review was conducted using Embase, Ovid Medline and Agris databases, which were searched on 7th of July 2019, limited to English language papers but with no time exclusion criteria. Very few, mostly old, and only preliminary serological studies of brucellosis in goats exist in Ecuador. In order to assess the current epidemiological situation, we performed a cross-sectional serological study in the goat populations of Carchi (n = 160 animals), Pichincha (n = 224 animals), and Loja provinces (n = 2024 animals). Only two positive serological results (RB negative and SAT-EDTA ≥400 IU/ml) were obtained in lactating goats from the same farm in Quito (Pichincha province). Additionally, milk was sampled from 220 animals in Pichincha province. The present study indicates a low app

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) are closed-containment systems (CCS) offering biosecure, water-efficient farming conditions, yet pathogen transmission remains a critical concern. While horizontal transmission in water is well-documented in RAS, the potential for aerosol-mediated transmission remains underexplored. The current study was conducted at two commercial Faroese Atlantic salmon RAS smolt farms. At Smolt farm 1, aerosolised pathogens were monitored using two aerosol samplers (Coriolis+ and Coriolis Compact, Bertin Technologies SAS, France),

SUMMARYBurkholderia pseudomallei and Burkholderia mallei present significant biosafety challenges due to their high pathogenicity, environmental resilience, intrinsic antimicrobial resistance, and potential use as bioterrorism agents. This review examines key aspects of laboratory management and infection control for these organisms, focusing on inconsistencies in biosafety protocols and risk classifications across regions. We synthesize current evidence on biocontainment requirements, disinfection strategies, and personal protective equipment (PPE), with particular emphasis on sustainable pra

Biosecurity is vital to Australia's efforts to prevent and respond to pests and diseases. Here, we report on testing suspected illegal goods (SIGs) as part of an active Australian biosecurity response in Sydney. The Australian Government, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry detected and secured consignments containing tuber products of unknown biosecurity risk and origin. Swab samples were collected from vacuum-sealed yam products, organic packing material (background negative controls), and field negative controls to assess possible cross-contamination from the storage facility.

African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) genotype II dominates outbreaks in Tanzania's Southern Highlands, continuing to persist as the dominant strain over a decade after its first incursion in 2010. A total of 205 samples from 120 holdings were collected, with 21 confirmed ASFV-positive animals from 14 holdings. Molecular analysis revealed genetic uniformity among isolates, all clustering within ASFV genotype II. Poor biosecurity measures, such as feeding of untreated swill (80% of holdings) and lack of restrictions on visitors (90% of holdings), were identified as risk factors. Additionally, co-inf

Poultry farming in Ethiopia is crucial for food security and income, but it faces significant challenges due to gaps in farmer awareness. A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Biocheck.UGent™ biosecurity scoring system and a questionnaire to evaluate poultry farmers' basic and practical knowledge concerning salmonellosis and mycotoxins. The questionnaire revealed substantial gaps in basic and practical knowledge regarding Salmonella spp infections and mycotoxin among 38 poultry farmers in Jimma. About 68.4% of farmers were unaware of the impact of salmonellosis on both poultry and hu
