The role of iron in the formation of Ediacaran 'death masks'.

The Ediacara biota are an enigmatic group of Neoproterozoic soft-bodied fossils that mark the first major radiation of complex eukaryotic and macroscopic life. These fossils are thought to have been preserved via pyritic "death masks" mediated by seafloor microbial mats, though little about the chemical constraints of this preservational pathway is known, in particular surrounding the role of bioavailable iron in death mask formation and preservational fidelity. In this study, we perform decay experiments on both diploblastic and triploblastic animals under a range of simulated sedimentary iro

Morphological, molecular, and toxin analysis of field populations of Alexandrium genus from the Argentine Sea.

In the Argentine Sea, blooms of toxigenic dinoflagellates of the Alexandrium tamarense species complex have led to fish and bird mortalities and human deaths as a consequence of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). Yet little is known about the occurrence of other toxigenic species of the genus Alexandrium, or of their toxin composition beyond coastal waters. The distribution of Alexandrium species and related toxins in the Argentine Sea was determined by sampling surface waters on an oceanographic expedition during austral spring from ~39°S to 48°S. Light microscope and SEM analysis for speci

Microplastic contamination in Ramsar wetlands: a systematic review of global sources, ecological impacts, and policy implications.

Ramsar wetlands, globally recognized for their ecological, hydrological, and socio-economic significance, are increasingly threatened by microplastic (MP) contamination. Despite mounting evidence of MPs in freshwater and coastal environments, no global synthesis has focused on MP contamination in Ramsar-designated wetlands. This study presents the first systematic global review of MP contamination in Ramsar wetlands by compiling peer-reviewed studies (April 2012-May 2025). This review addresses MP sources, transport pathways, contamination levels in surface water, sediment, and biota especiall

The toxicity of arsenic(III), chromium(VI) and zinc to groundwater copepods.

Groundwater ecosystems globally are threatened by anthropogenic contamination, yet there are few ecotoxicological data using obligate groundwater biota on which to base risk assessments. Copepods are found inhabiting aquifers of different geologies around the world and so are a useful taxon for use in ecotoxicological studies of groundwater. The aim of this study was to test the sensitivity of obligate groundwater copepods to metal contaminants (arsenic(III), chromium(VI) and zinc) in groundwater in static 96 h, 14 days and 28 days exposure tests. The copepods were variably sensitive to As, Cr

Understanding the underwater behaviour of scuba divers in Hong Kong.

Diving-related activities may constitute a major threat to coral reefs. This study aimed to quantify the impact of diving in Hong Kong on hard corals and understand how socio-economic characteristics and experience level of divers influence diver-inflicted damage. We recorded and analysed the underwater behaviour of 81 recreational divers. On average, a diver was in contact with marine biota 14.7 times with about 40% of contacts involved corals and 38% were damaging contacts with corals or other biota in a single dive. The most harm-inflicting groups included inexperienced and camera-carrying

Temporal changes in the water quality and ecology of an alluvial aquifer through an agricultural crop cycle.

Irrigation is essential to intensive agriculture worldwide, particularly in semi-arid climates where rainfall is unreliable. The use of surface and groundwater for crop irrigation can alter aquifer dynamics by lowering water tables and degrading water quality through the leaching of agrochemicals, nutrients, and organic carbon. These changes pose significant risks to the integrity of groundwater ecosystems. To assess these impacts, we conducted a spatial and temporal study of groundwater chemistry and biota (using environmental DNA (eDNA)) in a shallow alluvial aquifer adjacent to an irrigated

Environmental quality standards for water framework directive priority substances: challenges and opportunities.

The recently published Daughter Directive on priority substances is the culmination of several years of effort by the European Commission to develop consistent, Europe-wide environmental quality standards (EQS) that are scientifically based and protective of Europe's surface waters. This commentary describes progress to date in deriving EQS under the Water Framework Directive and identifies some remaining challenges and opportunities. In the Daughter Directive, annual average EQS are set for surface waters for all 33 priority substances. No sediment standards are included, and biota EQS are pr

Coupling of nitric acid digestion and anion-exchange resin separation for the determination of methylmercury isotopic composition within organisms.

Isotope ratios of methylmercury (MeHg) within organisms can be used to identify sources of MeHg that have accumulated in food webs, but these isotopic compositions are masked in organisms at lower trophic levels by the presence of inorganic mercury (iHg). To facilitate measurement of MeHg isotope ratios in organisms, we developed a method of extracting and isolating MeHg from fish and aquatic invertebrates for compound-specific isotopic analysis involving nitric acid digestion, batch anion-exchange resin separation, and pre-concentration by purge and trap. Recovery of MeHg was quantified after

Arsenic, lead and cadmium concentrations in caudal crests of the yacare caiman (Caiman yacare) from Brazilian Pantanal.

Wetlands are environments of extreme importance due to their high biodiversity and invaluable ecosystem services. Nevertheless, wetlands worldwide are under the increasing threat of the effects of contaminants, which put at risk the biota and the ecosystems. Herein the concentrations of non-essential and toxic elements arsenic (As), lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in caudal crests of the yacare caiman (Caiman yacare) from the Brazilian Pantanal, one of the largest wetlands in the world, were investigated aiming to compare concentrations in individuals from a large pristine area (Southern Pantanal)

Environmental presence and toxicological risks of octocrylene in the marine, coastal and transition ecosystems.

Personal care products, including ultraviolet (UV) filters, are increasingly recognized as emerging pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. This review summarizes relevant data on the environmental presence of octocrylene (OC) in water, sediment and biota of coastal ecosystems as well as its toxicological effects. High environmental levels and anthropogenic pressures threaten biota in touristic areas. A total of 14 taxonomic groups, spanning bacteria to fish, were evaluated for the toxicological effects of OC. Three major gaps were identified: (i) limited environmentally realistic chronic exposure s

Fungal and algal community structures and their relationships with soluble salts at the Dazu Rock Carvings, China.

Fungi and phototrophic microorganisms can lead to the deterioration of heritage materials. In this study, Dazu Rock Carvings, a representative stone cultural heritage in China, was selected as the study site. Biofilms with different visible colors were systematically sampled and compared, as color serves as an easily observable in situ indicator reflecting differences in microbial composition and micro-environmental conditions. High-throughput sequencing was employed to characterize microbial community structure and composition, and their relationships with environmental factors were analyzed.

Disassembly of a tadpole community by a multi-host fungal pathogen with limited evidence of recovery.

Emerging infectious diseases can cause host community disassembly, but the mechanisms driving the order of species declines and extirpations following a disease outbreak are unclear. We documented the community disassembly of a Neotropical tadpole community during a chytridiomycosis outbreak, triggered by the generalist fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Within the first 11 months of Bd arrival, tadpole density and occupancy rapidly declined. Species rarity, in terms of tadpole occupancy and adult relative abundance, did not predict the odds of tadpole occupancy declines. Bu

A cure for the plague of parameters: constraining models of complex population dynamics with allometries.

A major goal of ecology is to discover how dynamics and structure of multi-trophic ecological communities are related. This is difficult, because whole-community data are limited and typically comprise only a snapshot of a community instead of a time series of dynamics, and mathematical models of complex system dynamics have a large number of unmeasured parameters and therefore have been only tenuously related to real systems. These are related problems, because long time-series, if they were commonly available, would enable inference of parameters. The resulting 'plague of parameters' means m

An introduction to the sources, fate, occurrence and effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals released into the environment.

Many classes of compounds are known or suspected to disrupt the endocrine system of vertebrate and invertebrate organisms. This review of the sources and fate of selected endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the environment includes classes of compounds that are "legacy" contaminants, as well as contaminants of emerging concern. EDCs included for discussion are organochlorine compounds, halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, brominated flame retardants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, alkylphenols, phthalates, bisphenol A and analogues, pharmaceuticals, drugs of abuse and steroid hormones

Novel brominated flame retardants: a review of their analysis, environmental fate and behaviour.

This review summarises current knowledge about production volumes, physico-chemical properties, analysis, environmental occurrence, fate and behaviour and human exposure to the "novel" brominated flame retardants (NBFRs). We define the term NBFRs as relating to BFRs which are new to the market or newly/recently observed in the environment. Restrictions and bans on the use of some polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) formulations, in many jurisdictions, have created a market for the use of NBFRs. To date, most data on NBFRs have arisen as additional information generated by research designed pr

Unravelling virus community ecology in bats through the integration of metagenomics and community ecology.

The spillover of viruses from wildlife into agricultural animals or humans has profound socioeconomic and public health impact. Vampire bats, found throughout South America, feed directly on humans and other animals and are an important reservoir for zoonotic viruses, including rabies virus. This has resulted in considerable effort in understanding both the ecology of bat-borne viruses and the composition and associated correlates of the structure of entire virus communities in wildlife, particularly in the context of disease control interventions. Skin microbiota: overview and role in the skin diseases acne vulgaris and rosacea.

As the first barrier to environmental exposures, human skin has developed an integrated immune system to protect the inner body from chemical, physical or microbial insults. Microorganisms inhabiting superficial skin layers are known as skin microbiota and include bacteria, viruses, archaea and fungi. The microbiota composition is crucial in the instruction and support of the skin's immune system. Changes in microbiota can be due to individual, environmental or behavioral factors, such as age, climate, hygiene or antibiotic consumption, which can cause dysbiosis. The contribution of skin micro

Escape from natural enemies depends on the enemies, the invader, and competition.

The enemy release hypothesis (ERH) attributes the success of some exotic plant species to reduced top-down effects of natural enemies in the non-native range relative to the native range. Many studies have tested this idea, but very few have considered the simultaneous effects of multiple kinds of enemies on more than one invasive species in both the native and non-native ranges. Here, we examined the effects of two important groups of natural enemies-insect herbivores and soil biota-on the performance of Tanacetum vulgare (native to Europe but invasive in the USA) and Solidago canadensis (nat

Deterministic risk assessment of firefighting water additives to aquatic organisms.

Past firefighting water additives were found to contain perfluorinated compounds that could persist in the environment resulting in potential adverse effects to biota. Since this revelation, manufacturers have introduced alternative firefighting water additives that are fluorine free, but few studies have investigated the fate and effects in the environment of these new additives. Firefighting water additives could enter aquatic ecosystems through run-off, leaching or direct application. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the potential effect that firefighting water additives could have

Short-term modulation of mineral phosphorus fractions by functionalized biochars in different alkaline soil types.

There remains a gap of knowledge regarding the functionalization of modified biochar types to enhance phosphorus (P) availability in arid soils. Therefore, original biochar (OB) derived from pyrolyzed Dodonaea viscosa feedstock at 500 °C was functionalized using ball milling (BMB), chemical oxidation (CHB), and biological activation (BIOB) to study their short-term effect on mineral P dynamics in charosphere of different soil types. Elemental and XRD analyses of OB and BIOB pointed to considerable amounts of P (0.95 and 0.71%) with a presence of P-containing minerals. EDS spectra of BIOB-amend
