Associations between neighborhood violence during pregnancy and birth outcomes: evidence from São Paulo's Western Region Birth Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight and prematurity remain leading causes of infant mortality and morbidity globally. Although extensive literature has highlighted the importance of socioenvironmental characteristics for birth outcomes, the role of indirect violence on health remains fairly understudied. METHODS: Using geocoded birth records from the ongoing Western Region Birth Cohort (Região Oeste Coorte - ROC-Cohort) of infants born between 2012 and 2014 and geocoded crime reports, we assessed the associations between exposure to violent crimes during pregnancy within a 1-km radius of the mother'

Joint Modeling of Singleton Preterm Birth and Perinatal Death Using Birth Registry Cohort Data in Northern Tanzania.

Understanding independent and joint predictors of adverse pregnancy outcomes is essential to inform interventions toward achieving sustainable development goals. We aimed to determine the joint predictors of preterm birth and perinatal death among singleton births in northern Tanzania based on cohort data from the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) zonal referral hospital birth registry between 2000 and 2017. We determined the joint predictors of preterm birth and perinatal death using the random-effects models to account for the correlation between these outcomes. The joint predictor

Fat Distribution among Children Born Extremely Low Birth Weight and Very Low Birth Weight: A Cohort Study.

Background: Fat distribution is associated with chronic diseases and birth weight may influence fat distribution throughout life. Our aim was to compare fat distribution in children born extremely low birth weight (ELBW) and very low birth weight (VLBW). Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated children born ELBW and VLBW around the 7th year of life. Fat distribution was assessed by ultrasonography measurements of abdominal subcutaneous and visceral fat thickness. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed. Results: We studied 63 children. Visceral fat thickness but not subcut

Prenatal exposure to metal mixture and sex-specific birth outcomes in the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: In utero exposure to individual metals may impact fetal growth, though little is known about the effects of exposure to metal mixtures. Therefore, we investigated joint effects of in utero exposure to a mixture of As (arsenic), Mn (manganese), and Pb (lead) on newborn outcomes in a United States population. METHODS: Concentrations of As, Mn, and Pb were determined in maternal postpartum toenail samples, a biomarker of in utero exposure, from 989 maternal-infant pairs (492 females and 497 males). Newborns' anthropometric characteristics, including head circumference, length, and we

Placental hypoxia-regulating network in relation to birth weight and ponderal index: the ENVIRONAGE Birth Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: HIF1α, miR-210 and its downstream targets ISCU, COX-10, RAD52 and PTEN are all part of the placental hypoxia-responsive network. Tight regulation of this network is required to prevent development of maternal-fetal complications such as fetal growth restriction. HIF1α expression is increased in preeclamptic placentae, but little is known about its association with birth weight in normal pregnancies. METHODS: We measured placental levels of HIF1α, miR-20a, miR-210, ISCU, COX-10, RAD52 and PTEN in 206 mother-newborn pairs of the ENVIRONAGE birth cohort. RESULTS: Placental HIF1α gen

Gestational Hypertension as a Mediator of Prenatal Ozone Exposure and Term Low Birth Weight: Birth Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Ambient ozone (O3) exposure has been found to be associated with gestational hypertension, which, in turn, increases the risk of term low birth weight (LBW). As such, gestational hypertension acts as a potential mechanism mediating restricted fetal growth; however, few epidemiological studies have quantified this specific mediation pathway. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine whether gestational hypertension serves as a mediator of the association between prenatal O3 exposure and term LBW. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study using the Cheeloo Lifespan Electron

Sex-specific relationships between prenatal exposure to metal mixtures and birth weight in a Chinese birth cohort.

Birth weight is an indicator linking intrauterine environmental exposures to later-life diseases, and intrauterine metal exposure may affect birth weight in a sex-specific manner. We investigated sex-specific associations between prenatal exposure to metal mixtures and birth weight in a Chinese birth cohort. The birth weight of 1296 boys and 1098 girls were recorded, and 10 metals in maternal urine samples collected during pregnancy were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression was used to estimate the association of individual metals or m

Polydrug Use During Pregnancy and Preterm Birth in a Low-Income, Multiethnic Birth Cohort, Boston, 1998-2018.

OBJECTIVE: The opioid epidemic in the United States increasingly affects women of reproductive age and has resulted in a rise in concurrent polydrug use. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of this polydrug use on preterm birth in a multiethnic birth cohort. METHODS: We analyzed data from 8261 mothers enrolled in the Boston Birth Cohort from 1998 to 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts. We grouped substances used during pregnancy based on their primary effects (stimulant or depressant) and assessed independent and combined associations with smoking on preterm birth. RESULTS: O

Gestational age at birth and behavioral problems from four to 11 years of age: birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Studies conducted mainly in high-income countries have shown that preterm births are associated with increased risk of behavioral problems and psychiatric disorders. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of behavioral problems from middle-childhood to early-adolescence according to gestational age at birth in a middle-income setting. METHODS: A population-based birth cohort (n = 4231) in Pelotas, Brazil, was followed-up in several occasions from birth to 11 years. Estimated GA was based on last menstrual period or, when unknown or inconsistent, on the Dubowitz method.

Incidence of psychotic disorders by birth cohort: a population-based cohort study in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Previous reports have suggested that the incidence of psychotic disorders has either been stable or decreasing over time in high-income countries, but overall trends may not capture birth cohort differences influenced by varying exposures to risk factors. We sought to assess whether the incidence of psychotic disorders has changed across birth cohorts. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using linked health administrative data on all people born between 1960 and 2009 in Ontario, Canada. We identified diagnoses of schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD) and psychosis n

Rotavirus Vaccine Coverage in a Birth Cohort - China, 2019-2023.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Rotavirus causes severe acute gastroenteritis and diarrhea-related mortality in children aged <5 years. Vaccination is an effective preventive strategy; however, no nationwide data on rotavirus vaccine coverage are available. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: Based on data from the National Immunization Program Information System, despite the upward trend, rotavirus vaccine coverage among children born between 2019 and 2023 in China remained low, with suboptimal series completion. Disparities by socioeconomic region and clinic density were observed for no
