There is no generally accepted explanation for the excess risk of adverse pregnancy outcome after short interpregnancy intervals. In this paper, we present a hypothesis that is both biologically plausible, empirically testable, and able to explain many observations. Maternal serum and erythrocyte concentrations of folate decrease from the fifth month of pregnancy onwards and remain low for a fairly long time after delivery. Women who become pregnant before folate restoration is complete have a raised risk of folate insufficiency at the time of conception and during pregnancy. As a consequence,

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to describe the occurrence of spontaneous version in twins in the third trimester, as well as the correlation between antepartum and birth presentation.
METHODS: Twin pregnancies were divided into four gestational age intervals: 20-23; 24-27; 28-31; and 32-36 weeks. Fetal presentation was categorized as cephalic (C) or non-cephalic (NC). Hospital records were reviewed to determine demographic factors, including mode of conception. Chi-square was used to compare distributions of presentations, and Cramer's V measure of association was used to correlate prese

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether intervening miscarriages and induced abortions impact the associations between interpregnancy interval after a live birth and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
DESIGN: Population-based cohort study.
SETTING: Norway.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 165 617 births to 143 916 women between 2008 and 2016.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We estimated adjusted relative risks for adverse pregnancy outcomes using log-binomial regression, first ignoring miscarriages and induced abortions in the interpregnancy interval estimation (conventional interpregnancy interval estimates) and subse

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate maternal and neonatal outcomes of women with twin pregnancies following a short interpregnancy interval (IPI < 6 months).
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective computerized database study in a single tertiary medical center between 2005 and 2021. Women who had an index singleton delivery and a subsequent twin gestation in their next pregnancy at the Shaare Zedek Medical Center (SZMC) were included. Maternal and neonatal outcomes of twin pregnancies following a short IPI (<6 months) were compared to those with an optimal IPI (18-48 months). Univariate analysis was followed by mu

OBJECTIVES: We aim to explore whether the long inter-pregnancy interval (IPI) modifies the association between previous cesarean section (CS) and adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes in a population with a high rate of CS and a long IPI.
METHODS: Adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes were compared between the previous CS and previous vaginal delivery groups. Logistic models were used to adjust for potential confounding factors and calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). The interaction model and stratified analyses were used to evaluate the modifications of IPI

BACKGROUND: This systematic review summarises association between short interpregnancy intervals and adverse perinatal health outcomes in high-resource settings to inform recommendations for healthy birth spacing for the United States.
METHODS: Five databases and a previous systematic review were searched for relevant articles published between 1966 and 1 May 2017. We included studies meeting the following criteria: (a) reporting of perinatal health outcomes after a short interpregnancy interval since last livebirth; (b) conducted within a high-resource setting; and (c) estimates were adjuste

Predicting preterm birth is uncertain, and numerous scientists are searching for non-invasive methods to improve its predictability. Current researches are based on the analysis of ElectroHysteroGram (EHG) records, which contain information about the electrophysiological properties of the uterine muscle and uterine contractions. Since pregnancy is a long process, we decided to also characterize, for the first time, non-contraction intervals (dummy intervals) of the uterine records, i.e., EHG signals accompanied by a simultaneously recorded external tocogram measuring mechanical uterine activit

There has been a sustained rise in cash transfer programs to the poor, and burgeoning interest in interventions promoting early childhood development. We draw together these trends to study whether open enrolment interventions targeting cash transfers to pregnant mothers unintentionally induce those not pregnant to accelerate birth timing in order to start receiving the cash. Our study context is rural Northern Nigeria, where households have high demand for liquidity because they are reliant on volatile earnings from agriculture, are subject to frequent natural and man-made aggregate shocks, a

We studied mean changes in birthweight from the first to the second delivery according to length of the inter-pregnancy interval. We also studied recurrence risk of low birthweight, preterm birth and perinatal death. We followed all women in Norway from their first to their second singleton delivery at gestational week 22 or beyond during the years 1970-2019, a total of 654 100 women. Data were obtained from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway. Mean birthweight increased from the first to the second delivery, and the increase was highest in pregnancies conceived < 6 months after the first del

BACKGROUND: The association between maternal interpregnancy interval (IPI) and congenital heart disease (CHD) in neonates remains inconclusive. This study aimed to examine the effect of maternal IPI on birth risk of CHD.
METHODS: Chinese women with two consecutive singleton deliveries in Guangzhou between January 2014 and December 2019 were selected as participants. Information on IPI and CHD was extracted from the Guangzhou Perinatal Health Care and Delivery Registry and the Guangzhou Birth Defects Surveillance Program. We stratified IPI into four categories: <24 months, 24-35 months, 36-59

BACKGROUND: Short birth intervals are associated with an increased risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. However, reduction of rates of short birth intervals is challenging in low-resource settings where majority of the women deliver at home with limited access to family planning services immediately after delivery. This study examines the feasibility of integrating a post-partum family planning intervention package within a community-based maternal and newborn health intervention package, and evaluates the impact of integration on reduction of rates of short birth intervals and preterm births.

Reproductive interconception care provided at maternal postpartum visits may help reduce unintended pregnancies and elongate birth intervals for women experiencing homelessness. To improve interconception care uptake, this qualitative study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to reproductive interconception care from the perspectives of women who were recently pregnant and homeless. A semi-structured interview guide and demographic survey were developed based on epidemiological findings, Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skill framework components, and a review by community health work

BACKGROUND: Caesarean section rates are increasing globally. Caesarean section and repeat caesarean section increase risk in the next pregnancy. Risks associated with next pregnancy after caesarean section for both the mother and fetus are well documented including placentation anomalies, uterine rupture, small for gestational age neonates and preterm birth. Interpregnancy interval may play a role in reducing risk in the next pregnancy. It is therefore important to understand the meaning of interpregnancy interval to women planning further pregnancies after caesarean section. Appreciating inte

Reproductive factors associated with breast cancer risk may also affect the prognosis. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of multiple reproductive factors with breast cancer prognosis and the modifying effects of menopausal status. We obtained data from 3805 breast cancer patients recruited between October 2008 and June 2016 in Guangzhou. The subjects were followed up until 30 June 2018. The hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated using multivariate Cox models to estimate the associations. It was found that there were U-shaped patterns for the asso

BACKGROUND: Inter-pregnancy interval has been identified as a potentially modifiable risk factor to improve perinatal outcomes. We examined the WHO recommended interval of at least 24 months after a livebirth to next pregnancy, and its recommendation of waiting for at least 6 months after a pregnancy loss to improve subsequent pregnancy outcomes. We aimed to estimate the association between inter-pregnancy interval and perinatal mortality using the Demographic and Health Survey reproductive and contraceptive calendar.
METHODS: For this population-based analysis, we extracted data for pregnanc

We used a retrospective cohort of 5,581 individuals to examine the association between interpregnancy interval (IPI) after stillbirth and pregnancy outcomes of preterm birth, preeclampsia, small for gestational age, recurrent stillbirth, infant death, and neonatal intensive care unit admission in the subsequent pregnancy. The IPI was divided in six categories, with 18-23 months as referent. Association between IPI category and adverse outcomes was determined with logistic regression models adjusted for maternal race and ethnicity, age, education, insurance, and gestational age at preceding sti

BACKGROUND: Short interpregnancy interval has been associated with increased risk of preterm delivery; recent studies employing within-sibship designs suggest that this risk may be exaggerated. There are unresolved issues regarding properties of this design.
OBJECTIVES: To compare directly the results, for short intervals, of between-person and within-sibship analyses when applied to the same target population.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data are from the National Survey of Family Growth, a statistically representative survey of women and men in the USA, 2006-2015. Participants provided a comp
