Kidney volume-to-birth weight ratio as an estimate of nephron endowment in extremely low birth weight preterm infants.

In humans, nephrogenesis is completed by 32-36 weeks gestation, with a highly variable total number of nephrons, ranging from 200,000 to over 2 million. Premature birth disrupts the development and maturation of the kidneys, leading to a reduction in the final number of nephrons. Due to significant genetic variability in the number of nephrons among individuals, it is crucial to identify premature infants with fewer nephrons at birth as early as possible. These infants are more susceptible to developing renal failure with advancing age compared to those with a higher nephron endowment. Bedside

Dietary Arginine Supplementation Improves Intestinal Mitochondrial Functions in Low-Birth-Weight Piglets but Not in Normal-Birth-Weight Piglets.

Our previous studies revealed that L-arginine supplementation had beneficial effects on intestinal barrier functions of low-birth-weight (LBW) piglets, which were associated with the enhanced antioxidant capacity. Moreover, mitochondrial functions are closely related to the redox state. This study was to explore potential mechanisms of L-arginine-induced beneficial effects against intestinal dysfunction by regulating mitochondrial function of LBW piglets. Twenty 4-day-old normal birth weight (NBW) piglets (BW: 2.08 ± 0.09 kg) and 20 LBW siblings (BW: 1.16 ± 0.07 kg) were artificially fed eithe

Childhood cognition and lifetime risk of major depressive disorder in extremely low birth weight and normal birth weight adults.

In general population samples, better childhood cognitive functioning is associated with decreased risk of depression in adulthood. However, this link has not been examined in extremely low birth weight survivors (ELBW, <1000 g), a group known to have poorer cognition and greater depression risk. This study assessed associations between cognition at age 8 and lifetime risk of major depressive disorder in 84 ELBW survivors and 90 normal birth weight (NBW, ⩾2500 g) individuals up to 29-36 years of age. Maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index, gestational weight gain influence birth weight.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that pre-pregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain have impact on pregnancy and birth weight, yet whether maternal gestational weight gain has a differential effect on the rates of adverse birth weight among women with different pre-pregnancy body mass index categories are unknown. METHODS: We selected 1617 children matched with their mothers as study subjects. The subjects were divided into three categories: weight gain below the American Institute of Medicine guidelines, weight gain within the American Institute of Medicine guidelines and weight gai

Influence of increased survival in very low birth weight, low birth weight, and normal birth weight infants on the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome in the United States: 1985-1991.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between infant survival and the rates sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in very low birth weight (VLBW), low birth weight (LBW), and normal birth weight (NBW) infants from 1985 to 1991. METHODS: The National Center for Health Statistics Birth Cohort Linked Birth/Infant Death Data Sets were used to determine birth weight, age at death, and cause of death for US-born singleton infants with birth weights of 500 g or more. RESULTS: Increasing infant and postneonatal survival rates were greatest in VLBW infants. In contrast, SIDS rates did not change in VL

[Does shift work cause spontaneous abortion, preterm birth or low birth weight?].

In Denmark 30% of females in the reproductive age regularly have shift work. 22 epidemiological papers were studied looking at associations between shift work and abortion, stillbirth, preterm birth, and birth weight. No convincing associations were observed between rotating shift work or fixed nightshift and negative pregnancy outcome. Some epidemiological support was found for a relation between fixed nightshift and late abortions/stillbirth. If fixed night work for all pregnant women is avoided, seven late abortion/stillbirths a year can be prevented. Fixed night work for pregnant women sho

Subsequent pregnancy following the birth of an extremely low birth-weight infant.

Of 103 mothers who delivered an extremely low birth-weight (ELBW, less than 1,000g) infant, 29% were primiparous; 51% of those who were multiparous had at least one previous miscarriage or perinatal death. The 41 (40%) mothers who decided against subsequent pregnancy were significantly older than the remaining mothers. Mothers were also significantly more likely to decide against subsequent pregnancy if their ELBW infant had survived. The outcome of subsequent pregnancies within 3 years of the ELBW birth was ascertained; 28% ended in miscarriage, 3% in stillbirth, 1% in neonatal death, 21% in

Impact of major congenital anomalies on preterm birth and low birth weight.

Major congenital anomalies (MCAs) are significant contributors to perinatal morbidity and mortality, especially in preterm and low birth weight neonates. The association between MCAs, preterm birth, and low birth weight remains poorly defined, necessitating further research to refine management strategies. This study aimed to investigate the impact of MCAs on preterm and low birth weight births in a sample of the Emirati population. The analysis was based on a cohort of singleton live births from the Mutaba'ah study (2017-2023). Regression models assessed the association between MCAs and both

Low Birth Weight and Preterm Birth Among Arab-American Women in Ohio.

OBJECTIVE: There is limited evidence about prevalence and odds of adverse birth outcomes among Arab American women in the United States. We estimated the prevalence of low birth weight (LBW < 2500 g) and preterm birth (PTB < 37 completed weeks' gestation) among Arab American women in Ohio and studied the association between ethnicity, Arab American nativity (foreign or US born) and odds of LBW and PTB. METHODS: We identified Arab American women based on birth certificate data from live singleton births from 2007-2010 to 2013-2015 and a name algorithm. We compared the prevalence of LBW and PTB

Brachial Plexus Birth Injury: Epidemiology and Birth Weight Impact on Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND: Brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) is a condition in which the brachial plexus is thought to be damaged during the birth process. Studies have cited a varying incidence rate ranging from 0.5 to 4.0 per 1000 live births. The purpose of this study is to evaluate birth claims data over a 15-year period to identify risk and protective factors for BPBI in the state of Colorado. METHODS: A data request was made to the state hospital association for birth claims data. We requested all birth claims from the years 2000 to 2014. ICD9 codes for variables of interest included: BPBI, shoulder

Effects of periodontal treatment phase I on birth term and birth weight.

Considering the high prevalence of preterm birth (PTB) and low birth weight (LBW) and their complications as well as the role played by periodontal disease in their incidence and the lack of any report of periodontal therapy on these problems in Iran, the goal of the present research was to determine the effects of periodontal treatment on PLBW incidence among women with moderate or advanced periodontitis who were referred to Javaheri hospital (2004-2005). This clinical trial research was conducted on 30 pregnant women age ranging from 18-35 years old, with moderate or advanced periodontitis.

Influence of the Urban Exposome on Birth Weight.

BACKGROUND: The exposome is defined as the totality of environmental exposures from conception onwards. It calls for providing a holistic view of environmental exposures and their effects on human health by evaluating multiple environmental exposures simultaneously during critical periods of life. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the association of the urban exposome with birth weight. METHODS: We estimated exposure to the urban exposome, including the built environment, air pollution, road traffic noise, meteorology, natural space, and road traffic (corresponding to 24 environmental indicators and 6

The significance of birth weight discordance in twins.

The author found, among 329 twin pairs, 50 (15.2%) cases of weight discordancy reaching or exceeding 22%. Among the 50 twin pairs, there were 65 boys and 35 girls, a sex ratio of 185.7. This degree of weight discordancy appears to be unrelated to maternal age, parity and gestational length. Growth retardation of one or both fetuses was significantly more frequent (80%) among weight-discordant than among concordant one (11.1%). There were more perinatal deaths between discordant than concordant twins. Among the twins who were born with evidence of growth discordancy, there was slightly increase

Birth weight and the incidence of childhood cancer.

The relationship of weight at birth to the occurrence of childhood cancer was studied with emphasis on the influence of age at diagnosis. Birth certificates for 681 children with cancer born in Washington State were linked with cancer registry data. Among children diagnosed with cancer during the first several years of life, there was an increased proportion with a high birth weight (greater than 4,000 g). The relationship was strongest for children under 2 years of age; about twice as many of them had high birth weights. However, the relationship was not present at all in those whose cancer w
