Diet is one of the most common traits used to organize species of animals into niches. For ruminant herbivores, the breadth and uniqueness of their dietary niche are placed on a spectrum from browsers that consume woody (i.e., browse) and herbaceous (i.e., forbs) plants, to grazers with graminoid-rich diets. However, seasonal changes in plant availability and quality can lead to switching of their dietary niche, even within species. In this study, we examined whether a population of wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) in northeast Alberta, Canada, seasonally switched their foraging behavior, a

Managers of public lands are charged with protecting some of our most important natural resources and ecosystems, while providing for their use and enjoyment by visitors. Almost one million visitors entered Yellowstone National Park by motorized means on snowmobiles (87%) or snow coaches (13%) during 1992-2003. Most vehicles toured the central portion of the park where bison (Bison bison) and elk (Cervus elaphus) concentrate in geothermal areas. We sampled >6500 interactions between groups of these species and groups of snowmobiles and snow coaches (collectively, OSV, over-snow vehicles) durin

The aim of the present study was to compare the expression of PTHrP in the epididymes of adult European bisons, and 12- and 5-month-old calves. The highest PTHrP expression was observed in adult animals in muscle cells and endothelium of large vessels, and in muscle cells of the epididymal duct. In one-year-old calves, the reaction was weaker than in adult bulls, being the weakest in 5-month-old calves. However, in small vessels of adult animals, in vascular cells and smooth muscle cells the reaction for PTHrP was considerably weak, being weaker in one-year-old calves, and negative in 5-month-

From December 1998 through February 1999, a study was conducted in a Brucella-infected bison herd to evaluate the safety of booster vaccination of adult bison (Bison bison) with 6 x 10(9) colony forming units (CFU) of Brucella abortus strain RB51 (SRB51) that had previously been vaccinated as yearlings with 1 x 10(10) CFU of SRB51. Abortions or other adverse effects were not observed after SRB51 booster vaccination. At 10 wk after adult vaccination, pregnant and nonpregnant bison (n = 65) were randomly selected for bacteriologic sampling of targeted maternal tissues during abattoir processing.

During the first half of the century, the majority of anthrax outbreaks in Canada occurred in the southern portions of Ontario and Quebec and were often associated with pastures contaminated by effluent from textile industries dealing with imported animal materials. In 1952, introduction of Federal regulations requiring disinfection of these materials greatly reduced the incidence of anthrax in eastern Canada. Since 1962, domestic outbreaks of the disease have been reported almost exclusively in cattle in the western prairie provinces. Between 1962 & 1993, nine anthrax epizootics have been rec

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) (Flaviviridae, Flavivirus) is an arthropod-borne virus, an etiologic agent of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), an infection involving the central nervous system. The disease is endemic in a large region in Eurasia where it is transmitted mainly by Ixodes ricinus in Europe and I. persulcatus ticks in Asia. This is the most important tick-transmitted arbovirus of human pathogenicity in Europe. The Białowieza Primeval Forest is a well-known endemic focus of tick-borne encephalitis. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of tickborne encephalitis vi

Growth factors: vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) were reported to affect normal physiological reproductive processes in human, domestic and free living animals. Moreover, some reports suggest that VEGF-A and FGF-2 may be directly involved in the control of the annual reproductive cycle of seasonally breeding animals but detailed knowledge is still missing. Our study aimed to demonstrate the expression of mRNA and protein for both factors in the tissues of testis and epididymis (caput, corpus, cauda) at different periods of the year (March, June

The Hook Lake Wood Bison Recovery Project (HLWBRP) is a wildlife conservation project aimed at recovering a captive, disease-free herd of wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) from a wild herd infected with bovine tuberculosis (Mycobacterium bovis) and brucellosis (Brucella abortus). The disease eradication protocol that we have used involves a combination of techniques, including (1) orphaning of newborn wild-caught calves to minimize exposure to B. abortus and M. bovis, (2) testing calves for maternal antibodies to brucellosis in the field prior to inclusion in the project, (3) isolating calve

The material for drug resistance testing was 28 strains of Mycobacterium caprae isolated from tissue collected post mortem from a free-living Bieszczady Mountain European bison (Bison bonasus caucasicus) herd. All drug susceptibility tests were carried out on an automated Bactec mycobacterial growth indicator tube (MGIT) 960 system, using Bactec MGIT 960 streptomycin, isoniazid, rifampin and ethambutol (S.I.R.E.) and Bactec MGIT 960 PZA kits. The analyzed M. caprae strains demonstrated susceptibility to PZA and the complement of four basic anti-mycobacterial drugs: S.I.R.E. Considering that we

The European bisons are the largest mammals of Europe that are still in danger of extinction. The species conservation is associated with their continuous reproduction, and bisons are characterized by the well-pronounced seasonality of reproductive processes. However, the exact mechanisms regulating their reproduction still remain unknown. Our previous studies indicated the involvement of some of the growth factors in the regulation of male seasonal reproductive activities in bison, showing expression patterns that seemed to be regulated by the length of the daylight. In the present study, usi

OBJECTIVE AND ANIMALS: Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) has been identified in a wide range of domestic and wild ruminants. Captive wildlife, including Bison spp., can experience Johne's disease-related epidemiological scenarios similar to those seen in cattle. To date, there is no epidemiological information about Map in captive wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) herds. The objective of this study was to examine age, sex, and location-specific density as potential risk factors associated with Map positivity in a captive wood bison herd located in Alberta.

Throughout the world, fragmentation of landscapes by human activities has constrained the opportunity for large herbivores to migrate. Conflict between people and wildlife results when migrating animals transmit disease to livestock, damage property, and threaten human safety. Mitigating this conflict requires understanding the forces that shape migration patterns. Bison Bos bison migrating from Yellowstone National Park into the state of Montana during winter and spring concern ranchers on lands surrounding the park because bison can transmit brucellosis (Brucella abortus) to cattle. Migratio

In our study, we decided to compare S100 protein expression in the material obtained from the epididymes of 5- and 12-month-old calves, and adult European bison, and to detect any differences in S100 expression according to the animal age and size of the organ examined. We used the epididymes obtained from 6 adult European bison aged 6-12 years, from 6 at the age of 12 months and 6 calves aged 5 months. Immunocytochemical reactions were performed using the avidin-biotinylated-peroxidase (ABC) technique according to HSU. Specific polyclonal rabbit antiserum against bovine S100 protein (Bio Gene

Bison are an ecologically and culturally important species on the European and North American continents. Their near extirpation was met with conservation efforts that prevented their extinction but left few animals or highly fragmented populations. Contemporary conservation efforts are focused on building ecologically and genetically sustainable bison herds for long-term conservation of the species. Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) can play a key role in building these herds by facilitating the movement of genetics in the form of gametes and embryos, while protecting animal well-bein

BACKGROUND: Handling livestock can be dangerous, and livestock-related injuries are increasing.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 83-year-old man who was gored and thrown by a bison bull during feeding is presented. The traumatic event resulted in two major injuries: an abdominal laceration with intestinal evisceration and cervical fractures after being lifted and forcefully thrown. The patient's hospital course included emergent surgery using the damage control approach resulting in an open abdomen, postoperatively, intensive care unit placement, and physiological management of the lethal diamond (acido

BACKGROUND: The aim of these studies was to determine the level of infection of European bison by nematodes belonging to the genus Setaria.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: From February 2006 to February 2007 21 bisons from 6 months to 20 years old shot in Białowieza Forest have been examined. During the necropsy pleural and peritoneal cavities were macroscopically examined for the presence of nematodes. The parasites were removed from tissues and fixed in 70% ethanol with 5% addition of glycerol and then identified to the species. Samples of blood were taken from shot bison and after centrifugation in

Two bison calves were submitted to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine to confirm suspected copper deficiency. In addition to clinical signs, there were pathologic changes in the cartilage and subchondral bone of several joints. Water analysis indicated high levels of sulfate in the drinking water, contributing to a secondary copper deficiency.

From 1980 to 1983, blood was taken from 60 selected European bison (Bison bonasus) in Poland. Serum samples were tested for the presence of antibodies against Brucella abortus, 14 serovars of Leptospira interrogans, Chlamydia spp., Coxiella burnetti; foot and and mouth disease virus, bovine leukemia virus and bovine herpes virus-1. In addition, an attempt was made to isolate bovine herpes virus-1 from the prepuce of selected bulls. Serological tests suggested chlamydial infection in 28 bison, subclinical Q-fever of a 2-yr-old heifer, subclinical bovine leukemia virus infection in a 12-yr-old b

Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) in cattle causes pneumonia, arthritis, otitis media, and mastitis. In addition, multiple outbreaks have been recorded in North American bison. The genomic data on Canadian M. bovis in bison and cattle to date is limited. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was used to assess the degree of genome conservation across four Canadian M. bovis strains recovered from bison and cattle. Whole-genome sequences of four M. bovis isolates (Mb1, Mb160, Mb300, Mb304) and the PG45 reference genome were utilized to identify the M. bovis genomic similarity, whole-genome single nucleotide p

BACKGROUND: Diversity and composition of microbial communities was compared across the 13 major sections of the digestive tract (esophagus, reticulum, rumen, omasum, abomasum, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, and rectum) in two captive populations of American bison (Bison bison), one of which was finished on forage, the other on grain.
RESULTS: Microbial diversity fell to its lowest levels in the small intestine, with Bacteroidetes reaching their lowest relative abundance in that region, while Firmicutes and Euryarchaeota attained their hig
