Association of exposure to personal care product chemicals with maternal thyroid health: a prospective cohort study integrated with targeted risk assessment for environmental chemicals strategy.

Widely used personal care product (PCP) chemicals can disrupt the function of thyroid hormones. Pregnancy-induced vulnerability heightens the risk of PCPs on maternal thyroid health, but their individual, joint, and longitudinal impacts have been underexplored. Moreover, the risk assessment regarding maternal thyroid-impairing effects of PCPs has been lacking from epidemiological and mechanistic insights. In this study, we conducted an integrated risk assessment of PCPs on maternal thyroid functions, synthesizing evidence from 47 epidemiological, 18 in vivo, and 19 in vitro evidences from four

Multi-level FeCo/N-doped carbon nanosheet for peroxymonosulfate oxidation and sterilization inactivation.

Magnetic carbon-based catalysts with environmental friendliness have exhibited prominent effects on advanced oxidation processes. Herein, a multi-level FeCo/N-doped carbon nanosheet (FeCo/CNS) was synthesized by facile impregnation iron-cobalt salt onto cotton and followed by confined pyrolysis. We identified excellent advantages of the modified FeCo/CNS materials: (i) The convenience of the synthesis method and (ii) The dual effect of sterilization and contaminant degradation achieved through the FeCo/CNS-activated Peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The comparative experimental showed that FeCo/CNS cou

Characterization of pregnant women exposure to halogenated parabens and bisphenols through water consumption.

Exposure of pregnant women to endocrine disruptor compounds, such as parabens and bisphenol A is of concern for fetal transition. Their halogenated degradation products, mainly coming from water treatment plans, could be problematic as well, depending on their occurrence in drinking water in the first place. Thus, 25 halogenated compounds were synthesised in order to investigate 60 substances (Bisphenols, parabens and their degradation products) in 325 drinking water samples coming from a French cohort study of pregnant women. Analysis was performed by tandem mass spectrometry coupled to gas c

The cannabinoid receptor 2 is an in vivo receptor of bisphenol A during bone formation.

Osteoporosis is a bone disorder characterized by decreased bone mass and increased risk of fractures afffecting over 200 million people worldwide. Currently the causes of osteoporosis are not well understood preventing an effective treatment for this disease. However, exposure to a common class of xenoestrogens known as bisphenols has been linked to this disorder. Our findings demonstrate that exposure to Bisphenol A (BPA) and its proposed replacements, bisphenol S (BPS) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), reduces osteoblast number and calcification at environmentally relevant doses during zebr

Derivation of the oral reference dose (RfD) for bisphenol S and bisphenol F based on epidemiological and experimental studies.

With bisphenol A (BPA) restricted, its analogs are appearing frequently in the environment, raising health concerns. However, no reasonable threshold of toxicity has been established at the current international level for BPA analogs. The aim of this study was to derive oral reference doses (RfD) for two BPA substitutes, bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF). A systematic search was conducted to screen epidemiologic and experimental rodent studies. Based on a thorough evaluation of those data, this study performed accurate model fitting using the Benchmark Dose Software (BMDS) to determine t

Determination of bisphenols in beeswax based on sugaring out-assisted liquid-liquid extraction: Method development and application in survey, recycling and degradation studies.

The methodology of sugaring out-assisted liquid-liquid extraction (SULLE) coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection was devised for quantifying bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol B (BPB) in beeswax. The effectiveness of SULLE was methodically explored and proved superior to the salting out-assisted liquid-liquid extraction approach for beeswax sample preparation. The analytical performance underwent comprehensive validation, revealing detection limits of 10 μg/kg for BPA and 20 μg/kg for BPB. The method developed was employed to analyse commercial beeswax (n = 15)

Effects of developmental exposures to Bisphenol-A and Bisphenol-S on hepatocellular function in male Long-Evans rats.

Bisphenol-S (BPS) is a current substitute for Bisphenol-A (BPA) in various commercial products (paper, plastics, protective can-coatings, etc.) used by all age groups globally. The current literature indicates that a drastic surge in pro-oxidants, pro-apoptotic, and pro-inflammatory biomarkers in combination with diminished mitochondrial activity can potentially decrease hepatic function leading to morbidity and mortality. Consequently, there are increasing public health concerns that substantial Bisphenol-mediated effects may impact hepatocellular functions, particularly in newborns exposed t

Electrochemical monitoring of bisphenol-s through nanostructured tin oxide/Nafion/GCE: A solution to environmental pollution.

Over the past few decades, phenolic compounds have been broadly exploited in the industries to be utilized in several applications including polycarbonate plastic, food containers, epoxy resins, etc. One of the major compounds in phenolics is Bisphenol-S (BPS) which has dominantly replaced Bisphenol-A in several applications. Phenolic compounds are extensively drained into the environment without proper treatment and cause several health hazards. Thus, to tackle this serious problem an electrochemical sensor based on SnO2/GCE has been successfully engineered to monitor the low-level concentrat

Phthalate esters, parabens and bisphenol-A exposure among mothers and their children in Greece (Rhea cohort).

Exposure to endocrine disruptors, used as additives, preservatives, plasticisers and solvents in numerous consumer products, might cause adverse health effects. Humans exposed to these chemicals, metabolise and excrete them mostly via urine. Urinary metabolite concentrations are used as biomarkers of exposure. We evaluated the exposure of 4-month pregnant women and their children at 2 years of age to phthalates, parabens and bisphenol-A. Concentrations of eight phthalate metabolites, six parabens and bisphenol-A were measured in 239 mother-child pairs of the "Rhea" cohort in Greece. Concentrat

Association of urinary bisphenols and triclosan with thyroid function during early pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenols and triclosan are considered as potential thyroid disruptors. While mild alterations in maternal thyroid function can result in adverse pregnancy and child developmental outcomes, there is still uncertainty whether bisphenols or triclosan can interfere with thyroid function during pregnancy. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the association of urinary bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF) and triclosan with early pregnancy thyroid function. METHODS: This study was embedded in the Swedish Environmental Longitudinal, Mother and child, Asthma and aller

Bisphenols exposure and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: from environmental trigger to molecular pathogenesis.

Bisphenols (BPs), including bisphenol A (BPA) and its substitutes (BPS, BPF), are ubiquitous environmental contaminants with emerging links to metabolic disorders. This review synthesizes current evidence on the role of BP exposure in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a global health crisis affecting 25% of adults worldwide. Epidemiological studies reveal significant positive associations between urinary/serum BP levels and NAFLD risk, particularly in males, with maternal exposure correlating to transgenerational metabolic dysfunction. Mechanistically, BPs disrupt

Environmental pollutants and testicular toxicity in male reproductive health: Basic evidence and translational prospects - A narrative review.

Global sperm concentration has declined by over 50% in the past five decades, with environmental pollutants identified as a critical driving factor. This review focuses on testicular-level evidence regarding the effects of microplastics, bisphenol compounds, and air pollution on male reproductive health, with an emphasis on spermatogenic and testicular somatic cell mechanisms. Microplastics have been detected in human testicular tissue, with a causal pathway established linking gut microbiota dysbiosis, immune activation, and blood-testis barrier disruption. Bisphenol A substitutes show compar

Empirical models to predict the effect of sterilisation and storage on bisphenols migration from metallic can coatings into food simulants.

Based on response surface methodology, empirical models were built to predict the influence of can processing (heat treatment) and storage conditions (time and temperature) on the migration of bisphenol compounds from the inner lacquer of tinplate cans (4 brands) into several food simulants. Analysis using liquid chromatography revealed the presence of BADGE.2H2O and BPA in all samples. Models were significant in fitting the levels of these two bisphenols in food simulants depending on the input variables, with excellent adjusted coefficients of determination. Their prediction performance was

Long-term exposure to bisphenol A or S promotes glucose intolerance and changes hepatic mitochondrial metabolism in male Wistar rats.

The present study evaluates the effects of low-level long-term exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) on serum biochemical markers, glucose homeostasis, mitochondrial energy metabolism, biogenesis and dynamics, and redox status in livers of Wistar rats. While only the exposure to BPS induces a significant body mass gain after 21 weeks, both compounds alter serum lipid levels and lead to the development of glucose intolerance. Regarding mitochondrial metabolism, both bisphenols augment the electron entry by complex II relative to complex I in the mitochondrial respiratory chain (MR

Enhanced toxicity of bisphenol F compared to its predecessor bisphenol A in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) during a six-week feeding trial.

This study aimed to assess the toxicity of bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol F (BPF) in rainbow trout following six weeks of dietary exposure. Fish were exposed to BPA, BPF, or their combination at nominal concentrations of 10 and 1000 µg/kg (i.e., BPAlow, BPAhigh, BPFlow, BPFhigh, BPA+BPFlow). Haematological analysis revealed a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in leukocytes and lymphocytes, but only in the BPFhigh group. Plasma biochemical markers showed significant increases (p < 0.05) in creatinine in BPAlow and elevated amylase activity in both BPF groups. Surprisingly, markers of endocrine

Mechanistic insights into the capture of bisphenol homologs by macroporous chitosan-bentonite composite foams.

Bisphenols (BPA, BPF and BPS) are emerging contaminants with well-documented endocrine-disrupting effects, and their environmental occurrence often coincides with heavy metals and microplastics. In this study, a three-dimensional chitosan/bentonite composite foam (CBF) was fabricated via directional ice-templating and systematically evaluated as a recoverable adsorbent for bisphenols. The CBF exhibited stable adsorption performance, with kinetics following the pseudo-second-order model and isotherms well described by the Langmuir model, achieving moderate maximum capacities of 13.69 to 16.27 m

Oral reference dose (RfD) derivation for five bisphenol A alternatives integrating BMD and NOAEL/LOAEL approaches.

Bisphenols (BPs) are widely used in plastic manufacturing, food packaging, and other industrial applications, with bisphenol A (BPA) being one of the most extensively produced chemicals globally. However, due to its endocrine-disrupting properties, BPA has been linked to reproductive abnormalities, metabolic disorders, neurodevelopmental impairments, and other adverse health effects, leading to regulatory restrictions. These restrictions have resulted in increased usage of BPA alternatives and thus exposure to the alternatives, whose toxicity thresholds remain insufficiently characterized. To

Bisphenol A and Its Analogue Bisphenol S Inhibit Cholinergic Neurotransmission at the Tripartite Colonic Myenteric Synapse of CD1 Mice by Targeting Interstitial Cells of Cajal.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) are frequently used in the plastic industry. Despite significant alimentary exposure, their effects on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract remain largely unknown. Cholinergic and/or purinergic neurotransmission facilitates GI tract motility and secretion, indirectly controlling the absorption and toxicity of xenobiotics. Hence, this study examined the neurochemical effects of BPA and BPS in the tripartite cholinergic myenteric synapse of CD1 mice colon. Short time exposure to both bisphenols showed a partial loss of VAChT-positive neurons and Ano-1-positive
