BACKGROUND: The technique of transpsoas lateral interbody fusion has been adopted to avoid direct anterior interbody fusion, but lateral fusions have been limited to disc spaces above L5 and are associated with neurologic injuries especially to the lumbar plexus when approaching L4-5. The authors aim to demonstrate a psoas splitting technique to decrease risk of complications associated with the standard transpsoas technique.
METHODS: Medical records of 84 patients with prospectively collected data reviewed. Two groups created 44 patients with standard lateral transpsoas approach (group 1) an

Immediate implant placement in the anterior maxilla remains a complex procedure, particularly when the cortical bone plate of the socket is not intact and a gingival recession is present. The reconstruction of both hard and soft tissues increases the complexity of these clinical scenarios. This case report describes a novel, minimally invasive technique to reconstruct class III sockets with simultaneous implant placement. Four incisions are made with a scalpel blade to create, or "draw," a square outline instead of raising a flap at the tuberosity to harvest a hard- and soft-tissue block. In a

A 69-year-old woman with bilateral primary open-angle glaucoma who underwent cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation and excisional goniotomy with the Kahook Dual Blade (KDB; New World Medical, Rancho Cucamonga, CA, USA) in both eyes one year prior was referred for evaluation of significant visual acuity loss and pain in the left eye. On initial examination, intraocular pressure in the left eye was 3 mmHg and slit lamp examination revealed normal anterior chamber depth. Gonioscopy revealed a cyclodialysis cleft that was confirmed by anterior segment optical coherence tomography.

Avascular necrosis of the femoral head is a frequent complication after osteosynthesis of femoral neck fractures. It is rarely seen after proximal femur fractures with intact trochanteric area. The choice of the implant varies from different blade systems (DHS, DCS and condylar plates) to intramedular nailing systems (gamma nail, classic nail). The complication of avascular necrosis of the femoral head after internal fixation of sub-trochanteric and proximal femur fractures is reported following intramedullary nailing. We report a case of a femoral head necrosis after osteosynthesis of a proxi

BACKGROUND: Controversy persists concerning the preferred treatment of peritrochanteric femoral fractures. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the mid-term outcomes of the newly developed implants - proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) for the stabilisation of this type of fracture.
METHODS: Between April 2006 and March 2008, 169 patients with peritrochanteric femoral fractures were treated with PFNA. As many as 26 patients were excluded from the study. According to the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) classification system, the remaining 143 fractures were classified as

Cephalomedullary interlocking nails that allow for trochanteric entry and minimally invasive fixation have revolutionized the contemporary management of subtrochanteric fractures with improved union rates and decreased incidence of fixation failure. The most successful alternative to intramedullary fixation remains the angled blade plate. Despite biomechanical superiority of contemporary intramedullary implants to previous intramedullary devices, the importance of achieving and maintaining satisfactory fracture reduction prior to and during hardware insertion cannot be overemphasized. Electrosurgical techniques are used during surgery to cauterize, and their damaging effects have primarily been documented in terms of tissue necrosis, charring, and localized heat accumulation. Metallic implants as well as the surgical blade can experience incidental electrosurgical current arcing that results in the generation and transfer of melted metallic particles. This work examines the composition, particle size distribution, and chemical state of the melted alloy surfaces and particles produced in vitro. Using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, a flash-me

BACKGROUND: The quality of intertrochanteric fracture reduction has traditionally been evaluated using simple radiographs. However, subjective intraoperative evaluation and efforts to achieve a perfect reduction are essential for optimal outcomes. This study aimed to establish criteria for the intraoperative assessment of the quality of intertrochanteric fracture reduction and also analyzed postoperative outcomes in terms of reduction quality.
METHODS: This study included 106 patients who received cephalo-medullary nailing for the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures between March 2012 an

Introduction Pertrochanteric femur fractures comprise approximately half of all hip fractures. The proximal femoral nail anti-rotation 2 (PFNA2), designed by Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesefragen (AO), is an intramedullary device with a helical blade rather than a screw for better purchase in the femoral head. This modification in the proximal femur nail (PFN) was done to adapt to the Asian population and reduce nail-related complications in the Asian population. Materials and methods The study was conducted in a tertiary health center from November 2022 to November 2024 and included 40

Building on validated in vitro and chronic in vivo testing of the Penn State University (PSU) Child Ventricular Assist Device (CVAD), the four-bladed prototype rotor (Rev 0.0) was redesigned using established analytical and computational methods to improve hydraulic efficiency while preserving hemodynamic performance and biocompatibility. Applying turbomachinery principles at the nominal operating condition (3 liters/minute [LPM], 8,000 revolutions/minute [RPM]), a five-bladed design (Rev 1.0) was created with an ideal inflow angle (β1 = 41.0°) and outflow angle (β2 = 27.4°). Ti3C2Tx MXene is emerging as the enabling material in a broad range of wearable and implantable medical technologies, thanks to its outstanding electrical, electrochemical, and optoelectronic properties, and its compatibility with high-throughput solution-based processing. While the prevalence of Ti3C2Tx MXene in biomedical research, and in particular bioelectronics, has steadily increased, the long-term stability and degradation of Ti3C2Tx MXene films have not yet been thoroughly investigated, limiting its use for chronic applications. Here, we investigate the stability of Ti3C2Tx films and e

Pertrochanteric femoral fractures are common and intramedullary nailing is an accepted method for their surgical treatment. Accurate placement of the implant is essential to ensure fixation. The conventional technique can require multiple guide wire passes, and relies heavily on fluoroscopy. A computer-assisted planning and navigation system based on two-dimensional fluoroscopy for guide wire placement in the femoral neck has been developed, in order to perform intramedullary pertrochanteric fracture fixation using the proximal femoral nail (PFNA). The planning process was supported by a 'zero

OBJECTIVE: Tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis is used to manage severe bone loss, arthritis, and/or instability. The goal is to relieve pain through a stable, well-aligned hindfoot and ankle. The purpose of this study was 2-fold: to biomechanically compare 1) initial stability, and 2) the effect of bone density on the stability of intramedullary nail and blade plate fixation in tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis.
DESIGN: Biomechanical study using anatomic specimens.
METHODS: Ankle and subtalar joint capsules were exposed for 7 pairs of fresh-frozen anatomic specimens. One ankle from each pair was in

CASE: A 74-year-old woman with osteopetrosis presented with severe right knee pain and difficulty walking due to osteoarthritis. She underwent robotic arm-assisted total knee arthroplasty (RA-TKA). Although the saw blade did not require replacement during surgery, a fracture associated with the tibial checkpoint occurred. The error of implant placement from the intraoperative plan was within 3.4°. After 1 year, the Forgotten Joint Score was 77, and she was independent in activities of daily living.
CONCLUSION: RA-TKA allows safe and precise bone resection, achieving appropriate alignment even

Background and Clinical Significance: In two-stage implant treatment the cover screw must be removed at second-stage surgery. Removal is occasionally prevented by cold welding or seizure. When the drive slot is damaged by escalating torque, no standard salvage protocol has been established, and the implant body itself may ultimately require removal. Case Presentation: During second-stage surgery for three implants placed in the mandibular right posterior region (#44, #45, #46) of a 68-year-old man, the cover screw at the #46 site was seized and could not be loosened with a manual screwdriver.

PURPOSE: Proximal femoral osteotomy (PFO) with periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) improves femoral head coverage in patients with proximal femoral and acetabular dysplasia. Historically, blade plates used in the PFO cause soft-tissue irritation and often lead to implant removal. Here we present a technique using a lower profile pediatric proximal femoral locking compression plate (LCP) for the PFO in a series of adults.
METHODS: The results from 13 hips in 11 patients ≥ 18 years old (age 18-37) with > 10 months of follow-up are presented.
RESULTS: All patients had improved radiographic parameter
