Restoration of blinking reflex and facial symmetry in a Bell's palsy patient.

Patients afflicted with Bell's palsy are faced with both functional and esthetic impairment. Prominent among these are the inability to close the eyelids and abnormal facial appearance, with concomitant difficulty in eating, drinking and speaking. Rehabilitation of such patients can be achieved by a multispecialty approach, with the prosthodontist functioning as an integral part of the treatment team. This article describes a simple and effective approach to restore the blinking reflex of the upper eyelid with custom gold implant and facial esthetics with cheek support prosthesis.

Bleaching/blinking assisted localization microscopy for superresolution imaging using standard fluorescent molecules.

Superresolution imaging techniques based on the precise localization of single molecules, such as photoactivated localization microscopy (PALM) and stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM), achieve high resolution by fitting images of single fluorescent molecules with a theoretical Gaussian to localize them with a precision on the order of tens of nanometers. PALM/STORM rely on photoactivated proteins or photoswitching dyes, respectively, which makes them technically challenging. We present a simple and practical way of producing point localization-based superresolution images that

Ipsilateral blinking seizures during left fronto-temporal ictal pattern on scalp EEG.

We report an infant with left eye blinking seizures accompanying a left (ipsilateral) fronto-temporal scalp EEG ictal pattern. The epileptogenic lesion was a left frontal encephalomalacia along the ventriculo-peritoneal shunt tract. The shunt was inserted for treatment of communicating hydrocephalus. This case illustrates the lateralizing value of the ictal blinking. Review of the literature suggests that seizures with unilateral blinking are likely to be produced by activation of ipsilateral trigeminal fibers innervating subdural intracranial structures and pial vessels in temporal and fronta

Spontaneous eye-blinking and stereotyped behavior in older persons with mental retardation.

Previous research indicates that abnormal stereotyped movements are associated with central dopamine dysfunction and that eye-blink rate is a noninvasive, in vivo measure of dopamine function. We measured the spontaneous eye-blinking and stereotyped behavior of older adults with severe/profound mental retardation living in a state mental retardation facility. Analyses revealed that the mean eye-blink rate of the residents that engaged in stereotypy was significantly lower than the rate for residents who did not exhibit stereotypy. Moreover, the stereotypy group also demonstrated greater variab

The Relationship of Depth of Anaesthesia With Blink Reflex in Cats.

BACKGROUND: The blink reflex is a neurological response characterised by eyelid movements and can provide important data on the state of anaesthesia. Sevoflurane is a commonly used inhalation anaesthetic agent in cats and evaluation of eye reflexes under this agent may help to better understand the depth of anaesthesia. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the blink reflex and the depth of anaesthesia in cats and to evaluate the parameters that can be obtained from the blink reflex in addition to its effect in determining the depth of anaesthesia. METHOD

A key role of the hippocampal P3 in the attentional blink.

The attentional blink (AB) refers to an impaired identification of target stimuli (T2), which are presented shortly after a prior target (T1) within a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) stream. It has been suggested that the AB is related to a failed transfer of T2 into working memory and that hippocampus (HC) and entorhinal cortex (EC) are regions crucial for this transfer. Since the event-related P3 component has been linked to inhibitory processes, we hypothesized that the hippocampal P3 elicited by T1 may impact on T2 processing within HC and EC. To test this hypothesis, we reanalyzed

Ictal Lid Movements: Blinks and Lid Saccades.

Two types of lid movements, blinks and lid saccades, have discrete kinematic properties and physiology. These differences are reflected in distinct phenomenology of disorders affecting their neural substrate. Proof of this principle was seen in two patients, one with parietal lobe epilepsy and the other with temporal lobe epilepsy. The lid movements in the patient with parietal lobe epilepsy were rhythmic, yoked, and had a rapid upward component that instantaneously followed a slow downward drift. These cyclic movements strikingly resembled nystagmus, but unlike typical eye nystagmus, the rapi

No evidence for a prolonged attentional blink in developmental dyslexia.

When two targets are presented within 500 msec of each other in rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP), the accuracy of second target identification is significantly reduced; a phenomenon termed the attentional blink. Recent studies have reported that children and adults with dyslexia exhibit deficits tied to the attentional blink; however, some ambiguity remains as to the nature of these impairments and how they relate to reading difficulties. The current study aimed to address these issues by examining attentional blink deficits in relation to orthographic, phonological, and fluency aspects

Blink reflex abnormalities in children with Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a common disorder which typically occurs during childhood or early adolescence. There is no definitive diagnostic test for TS. The objective of this study was to demonstrate whether neurophysiological abnormalities of the blink reflex can be observed in children with TS. We enrolled 15 children with TS, diagnosed according to DSM IV Diagnostic Criteria, and 15 controls. The blink reflex was elicited by stimulating the supraorbital nerve in order to measure the early response (R1), homolateral and contralateral R2 (late) responses, amplitude of R1 and duration of R2. Attentional blink in adolescents with varying levels of impulsivity.

We explore the temporal attention function in a non-clinical sample of adolescents varying in impulsivity, as assessed with the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale. In a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation task, in which two targets (T(1) and T(2)) were presented in close temporal proximity among distractors, participants tried to identify T(1) and detect T(2) in one (dual-task) experiment and only to detect T(2) in a second, control (single-task) experiment. The sensitivity of T(2) detection was analyzed using signal detection theory. The attentional blink -- the impairment in T(2) detection following t

Blink reflex and discomplete facial nerve palsy.

BACKGROUND: Electrophysiologic findings of the blink reflex in patients with Bell's palsy are usually said to be either prolonged latencies and/or absent early and middle responses of it. METHODS: Facial nerve conduction and blink reflex studies were performed on a 42-year-old male patient with right-side Bell's palsy. Studies were done using protocols previously validated and published elsewhere. RESULTS: The right compound muscle action potential was not found after stimulation of the right facial nerve as expected. Absence of the short (R1) and middle (R2) responses of the blink reflex we

Blink reflex in migraine and tension-type headache.

The blink reflex was studied in 19 patients with migraine, 10 patients with tension-type headache, and 30 healthy controls. Significantly lower values of R2 and R2' amplitude and size were found in the migraine group, compared with the healthy control group. The differences were independent of the stimulation side (headache or nonheadache) and highly significant (P<0.001). The abnormalities of R2 and R2' amplitude and size were found only during the headache phase of migraine, being normal between migraine attacks. R1 latency and amplitude were normal in all patients. The blink reflex was norm

Serotonergic modulation of eye blinks in cat and monkey.

Serotonergic modulation of spontaneous and reflexive blinking was studied in four cats and one monkey. In cats, facial nucleus injections of the type-2 serotonin receptor (5-HT2) antagonist ketanserin tended to increase the latency of the first (R1) and second (R2) components of the blink reflex to supraorbital nerve stimulation. Injections of serotonin tended to increase and of ketanserin, to decrease the duration and amplitude of R2. Serotonin also produced unilateral blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm. In the monkey, the 5-HT2 agonist 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine increased spontaneous bl
