Multiplicity: An Explorative Interview Study on Personal Experiences of People with Multiple Selves.

Background and aims: Personality psychology research relies on the notion that humans have a single self that is the result of the individual's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that can be reliably described (i.e., through traits). People who identify themselves as "multiple" have a system of multiple or alternative, selves, that share the same physical body. This is the first study to explore the phenomenon of multiplicity by assessing the experiences of people who identify themselves as "multiple." Methods: First, an Internet forum search was performed using the terms "multiplicity" and "mu

Survey-Defined Patient Experiences With Aspirin-Exacerbated Respiratory Disease.

BACKGROUND: Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) is a chronic illness of progressive recurrent sinus disease with nasal polyps and asthma. No population-based comprehensive surveys of patients with AERD have been carried out to assess specific quality-of-life impact or perceptions of treatment benefit. OBJECTIVE: This survey analyzed perceptions and quality of life in those living with AERD and queried patient observations of treatment effectiveness. The survey assessed whether dietary and nutritional support was used to manage AERD, and if so, whether there was a perceived benefit.

The DSM-5 and the Politics of Diagnosing Transpeople.

In the DSM-5, there has been a change in the diagnosis for transpeople of all ages from Gender Identity Disorder (GID) to Gender Dysphoria (GD), in part to better indicate the distress that transpeople may experience when their gender identity feels incongruent. The Workgroup for Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders, chaired by Kenneth J. Zucker, was employed by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) to update the DSM-5's GID diagnosis reflecting contemporary scientific knowledge. Additionally, in a pre-publication report to the APA, members of the Workgroup suggested that they would also

Gender on the brain: a case study of science communication in the new media environment.

Neuroscience research on sex difference is currently a controversial field, frequently accused of purveying a 'neurosexism' that functions to naturalise gender inequalities. However, there has been little empirical investigation of how information about neurobiological sex difference is interpreted within wider society. This paper presents a case study that tracks the journey of one high-profile study of neurobiological sex differences from its scientific publication through various layers of the public domain. A content analysis was performed to ascertain how the study was represented in five

Web Monitoring as an Early Warning System: "Benadryl Challenge" Online Mentions Correlate With Diphenhydramine Overdoses Reported to US Poison Centers.

PURPOSE: Social media has propagated several "challenges" that engage primarily adolescents in life-threatening behaviors such as the "Benadryl Challenge," where participants film themselves ingesting large doses of diphenhydramine. Once shared online, these activities have the potential to propagate, leading to an increase in those seeking emergency healthcare. METHODS: This study correlated call volume from poison centers with online mentions of the Benadryl Challenge. Data was collected from the National Poison Data System (NPDS) and the RADARS Web Monitoring Program across July 1-December

Internet Health Resources for Diabetic Foot Search: The Content, Quality, and Readability of Information on Web Sites.

BACKGROUND: As the incidence of diabetes mellitus increases, the incidence of diabetic foot also increases. This situation, which may lead to devastating complications and progress to limb loss for patients, exposes patients and their social environments to a big crisis. Thus, patients may seek secondary opinions from online sources about information they initially obtained from health institutions. We aimed to evaluate the information content related to diabetic foot on the Internet that is probably used by patients for Internet searching. METHODS: After software optimization and reset, rela

Portals to the past and bridges to the future: exploring the impact of doulas on the birthing experiences of black and Latinx women.

INTRODUCTION: In the USA, maternal morbidity and mortality is markedly higher for women of colour than for white women. The presence of a doula has been associated with positive birthing outcomes for white individuals, but the experiences of women of colour remain underexplored. The purpose of this qualitative paper is to understand the attitudes of black and Latinx communities towards doula-supported birthing practices. METHODS: The perspectives of people of colour, both birthing women and doulas, were investigated through popular media sources, including blogs, magazine articles, podcasts a

Discrepancies between the internet and academic literature regarding vitamin use for male infertility.

BACKGROUND: The accuracy of online medical information is variable. A 2014 Cochrane review did not support a robust improvement in male infertility after antioxidant supplementation. Many subfertile men take vitamins in hopes of improving their fertility. We sought to evaluate the content of online information for male fertility vitamins, and compare this with the published literature. METHODS: We searched Google to assess online information regarding vitamins and male infertility. Websites were evaluated for authorship, content, claims and validity. We then reviewed the Recommended Daily All

A scoping review of diet-focused resources to improve depression and anxiety among people with multiple sclerosis.

Depression and anxiety are more prevalent in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) than in the general population. A high-quality diet has been shown to have beneficial effects on MS symptoms, including mental health outcomes. Adults with MS gather information from a range of resources with the aim of improving their diet and mental health. However, the development and nature of diet-focused resources aimed at improving mental health in adults with MS remain unclear. We conducted a scoping review to identify and map diet-focused resources aimed at improving depression and anxiety in adults with

Lyrical Witness: Poetic Inquiry Into Nurses' Emotional and Ethical Worlds.

This study explores the emotional and ethical dimensions of nursing practice through poetic inquiry. Drawing on 42 publicly accessible poems authored by nurses during and after the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the research investigates how verse serves as a medium for reflection, resistance, and relational meaning-making in clinical contexts. The central aim was to identify recurring themes that capture the affective labor, moral dilemmas, identity formation, and small triumphs experienced by nurses in their day-to-day practice. Using a six-phase thematic poetic analysis grounded in arts-bas
