Background Safe blood transfusion remains a challenge, and transmission of infections is always a concern. The detection of infectious diseases in blood donors ensures the safety of blood transfusion. Another challenge is the differences in blood group antigens due to the ability of clinically significant antibodies to cause adverse reactions. This study aimed to evaluate the pattern of distribution and the possible correlation of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) with different blood groups. This study also aimed to evaluate the frequencies of minor blood group antigens detected on sc

BACKGROUND: Efficient blood transfusion planning requires knowledge of the distribution and accessibility of blood banking facilities (BBFs). We mapped population-level, timely geographic access to BBFs across 735 districts across India.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a pan-India geospatial modelling study using 2024 data from e-RaktKosh, a centralised blood management system. As outcomes, we estimated BBFs per million people, travel time to the nearest BBF, and access population coverage (APC), defined as the proportion of the population with access to the nearest BBF by motorised tr

INTRODUCTION: Accurate prediction of blood product demand is essential for maintaining adequate supply while minimizing wastage. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) approaches have emerged as promising tools for transfusion demand forecasting across multiple scales, ranging from individual patients to regional supply chains. This review provides a structured overview of AI applications in blood banking, organized by prediction scope and clinical objective.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searching PubMed and Scopus for studies pub

Cord Blood (CB) is a unique and readily available source of hematopoietic stem cells for transplantation. CB also contains other types of stem cells, including endothelial stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells, that may prove useful in non-traditional clinical uses. Genetic and molecular analyses have demonstrated that CB stem cells lie somewhere between mature stem cells like those found in Bone Marrow (BM), and fetal stem cells. After 25 years of clinical experience, CB is now used in the same fashion as BM for all typical malignant and genetic diseases treated by bone marrow transplant. Due

Sickle cell disease (SCD) patients are prone to develop complications that include stroke, acute chest syndrome, and other crises. Some of these complications require chronic transfusion therapy or red cell exchange (RCE), either for therapeutic or prophylactic reasons. Due to a discrepancy of red cell antigens between African Americans and Caucasians (majority blood donors), the incidence of alloantibody formation is very high, which makes it difficult to find compatible red cell units, especially for urgent RCE. Some of the above conditions require immediate oxygen delivery to the tissues. T

As of November 1997, a total of 2098 cord blood (CB) units are stored in the CB bank Düsseldorf (mean volume, total nucleated cell count, BFU-E, CFU-GM, CFU-GEMM, CD34+ cells). Considering a threshold of 2 x 10(7) nucleated cells (NC)/kg body weight required for transplantation and 10 +/- 5 x 10(8) NC per CB unit, 100%, 67% and 25% of the CB units contain sufficient NC to engraft patients of 10 kg, 35 kg and 50-70 kg, respectively. Within the last 3 years with the majority during 1997, a total of 4000 preliminary searches, 450 extended unit reports were submitted to the CB bank by fax or World

This report details the results of a 1995 survey of the 40 fellowship training programs in blood banking and transfusion medicine in the United States approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Fellows primarily enter transfusion medicine training after completing a pathology residency, and are subsequently employed in an academic or university setting, or a blood donor center. Program directors indicated that either the current level, or fewer, transfusion medicine specialists will be needed in the future. The educational content of fellowship training was examined,

BACKGROUND: Cord blood has moved rapidly from an experimental stem cell source to an accepted and important source of hematopoietic stem cells. There has been no comprehensive assessment of US public cord blood banking practices since the Institute of Medicine study in 2005.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Of 34 US public cord blood banks identified, 16 participated in our qualitative survey of public cord blood banking practices. Participants took part in in-depth telephone interviews in which they were asked structured and open-ended questions regarding recruitment, donation, and the informed con

BACKGROUND: In total, 4502 units of cord blood (CB) were collected during a 2-year period from 2005 to 2006 by the Buddhist Tzu-Chi Stem Cells Center. The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence of microbial contamination and type of organism present in the cord blood. The clinical impact of microbial contamination on hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) grafts used for HPC transplantation is also discussed.
METHODS: First and second specimens were obtained for microbial assessment. These were collected in laboratory after cord blood collection and after cord blood unit manipulation, re

During a 15-month period, cytomegalovirus (CMV) isolations were attempted from leukocytes derived from 290 healthy blood-bank donors. The major proportion of the specimens were tested 2 to 5 hr after donation. However, CMV was not recovered from any of the specimens examined. At the time of donation, 75% of donors had CMV complement-fixing antibodies demonstrable in titers of 10 to >/=320. The age of the study group ranged from 17 to 57 years. During the same time period and with the use of identical isolation techniques, postnatal cytomegaloviremia was demonstrated in four infants with cytome

Maintaining an adequate blood product inventory is a complex challenge that intersects blood bank operations, clinical decision-making, and systems-level institutional policy. Anesthesiologists occupy a uniquely influential position in blood stewardship, responsible for preoperative assessment, intraoperative management, and real-time transfusion decisions. This review examines the fundamentals of blood banking as they apply to perioperative practice, the epidemiology of blood product demand and shortage including the national crisis of type O blood depletion, and the evidence base for patient

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion services play a very key role in modern health care service delivery. About 118.5 million blood donations were collected globally in 2022. However, about 1.6 million units of blood are destroyed annually due to transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs). There is a very high risk of TTIs through donated blood to recipients if safe transfusion practices are not observed. This study determined the prevalence and factors associated with TTIs among blood donors in Arua regional blood bank, Uganda.
METHODS: This study was a retrospective cross-sectional design that i

INTRODUCTION: The safety of a blood transfusion practice is anchored on safe blood from a healthy donor, while further protecting the donor from future harm. This study aimed to evaluate the hematological parameters of blood donors in view of their donor category to aid in assessing the safety threshold in terms of donation frequency.
METHODS: This study made use of the descriptive cross-sectional design. The blood donors were bled and their samples analyzed using a hematology autoanalyzer.
RESULTS: A total of 178 male blood donors were recruited. Most of the donors were aged 18 to 39 years
