Clinical associations with a polygenic predisposition to benign lower white blood cell counts.

Polygenic variation unrelated to disease contributes to interindividual variation in baseline white blood cell (WBC) counts, but its clinical significance is uncharacterized. We investigated the clinical consequences of a genetic predisposition toward lower WBC counts among 89,559 biobank participants from tertiary care centers using a polygenic score for WBC count (PGSWBC) comprising single nucleotide polymorphisms not associated with disease. A predisposition to lower WBC counts was associated with a decreased risk of identifying pathology on a bone marrow biopsy performed for a low WBC coun

White Blood Cell and Platelet Counts Are Not Suitable as Biomarkers in the Differential Diagnostics of Dementia.

Apart from Alzheimer's disease (AD), no biomarkers for the differential diagnosis of dementia have been established to date. Inflammatory processes contribute to the pathogenesis of dementia subtypes, e.g., AD or frontotemporal dementia (FTD). In the context of cancer or cardiovascular diseases, white blood cell (WBC) populations and platelet counts, as well as C-reactive protein (CRP), have emerged as biomarkers. Their clinical relevance in dementia, however, is currently only insufficiently investigated. In the present study, hematological and inflammatory parameters were measured in the per

Elevation of white blood cells and platelet counts in patients having chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Many risk factors that might contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis have been proposed, including chronic inflammation and infection. Furthermore, systemic inflammatory responses to periodontal bacteria have been suggested as a pathogenetic link between periodontal disease and atherosclerosis. The purpose of this study was to estimate the white blood cell (WBC) and platelet counts in chronic periodontitis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty patients with chronic periodontitis and 50 patients with healthy periodontium were included in this study. Oral hygiene

Similarity in white blood cell counts between white and black children with bacteremia.

The charts of 104 white and 52 black children with bacteremia caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae type b were reviewed to determine each patient's white blood cell (WBC) and absolute polymorphonuclear cell (PMN) counts at the time of presentation to the emergency room. Mean WBC and PMN counts were virtually identical for the racial groups, 18,300 vs. 18,700/microliter and 12,900 vs. 13,000/microliter, respectively. Examination of subgroups of white and black children with or without meningitis or other focal infection also revealed no significant differences between ra

Peripheral blood cell counts of prematurely born, small for gestational age neonates.

BACKGROUND: Neonates born small for gestational age (SGA) are at an increased risk of multiple severe complications, including infections. This suggests that immune cells and other peripheral blood cells may be affected. PURPOSE: Here we aimed to investigate whether SGA severity affects complete blood count and leukocyte differentiation of preterm neonates with a gestational age (GA) of <35 weeks and identify clinical factors that influence cell counts. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study investigated the complete blood count sampled within 72 hours after birth in 1,940 preterm neonates

Rehabilitation intervention safety in patients with malignant lymphoma with low blood cell counts.

[Purpose] We established criteria for patients with malignant lymphoma with low blood counts, who did not meet the criteria to discontinue rehabilitation or the blood transfusion criteria even though they were borderline for discontinuing rehabilitation. We investigated physical symptoms, activities of daily living, and adverse events in patients who were permitted to undergo rehabilitation intervention using the new criteria. [Participants and Methods] Forty-two patients met the criteria to discontinue rehabilitation based on blood data, and the new-criteria group included 153 patients who re

White blood cell count is a poor predictor of severity of disease in the diagnosis of appendicitis.

The white blood cell (WBC) count is considered to be a useful test in the diagnosis of appendicitis. The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical features of patients with normal WBC appendicitis and also to determine whether a higher WBC count correlates with a more advanced stage of appendicitis. Patients with pathologically confirmed appendicitis from January 1989 to December 1994 were included in the study (n = 1919). The age, gender, temperature, length of hospital stay, and severity of disease (1 = acute appendicitis; 2 = gangrenous appendicitis; 3 = perforated appendicitis with

Neonatal nucleated red blood cell and lymphocyte counts in fetal brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether neonatal lymphocyte or nucleated red blood cell (RBC) counts can be used to date fetal neurologic injury. METHODS: Singleton, term infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, permanent neurologic impairment, and sufficient laboratory data were divided into two groups: infants with preadmission injury, manifested by a nonreactive fetal heart rate (FHR) pattern from admission until delivery; and infants with acute injury, manifested by a normal FHR pattern followed by a sudden prolonged FHR deceleration. Lymphocyte and nucleated RBC values were compared with pu

The neonatal blood count in health and disease. I. Reference values for neutrophilic cells.

Reference ranges for absolute total neutrophils/mm3, absolute immature neutrophils/mm3, and the fraction of immature to total neutrophils (I:T proportion) during the first 28 days of life are developed from 585 peripheral blood counts obtained from 304 normal neonates and 320 counts obtained from 130 neonates with perinatal complications demonstrated to have no statistically significant effect on neutrophil dynamics. Perinatal factors other than bacterial disease which significantly alter neutrophil dynamics include maternal hypertension, maternal fever prior to delivery, hemolytic disease, an

Red Blood Cell, White Blood Cell, and Platelet Counts as Differentiating Factors in Cardiovascular Patients with and Without Current Myocardial Infarction.

Cardiovascular diseases continue to pose a major global health burden, contributing significantly to mortality rates worldwide. This study aimed to explore the association between myocardial infarction and basic hematological parameters-red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets (PLTs)-which are routinely assessed in clinical diagnostics. The analysis was conducted on a cohort of 743 adults hospitalized with diagnosed cardiovascular conditions. To identify blood parameters that distinguish patients with a history of first-time myocardial infarction from those who had never

Safety and performance of the Spectra Optia apheresis system for white blood cell depletion in patients with elevated white blood cell counts.

BACKGROUND: For the past 30 years, white blood cell depletion (WBCD) or leukocytapheresis has been conducted to rapidly reduce excessive circulating white blood cell (WBC) concentrations in patients at risk for or with symptoms of leukostasis due to hyperleukocytosis. The goal of leukocytapheresis is to prevent or treat acute complications from leukostasis, thereby enabling patients to receive potentially curative chemotherapy. METHODS: This report details the results from a retrospective and a prospective clinical study conducted in the European Union and the People's Republic of China, whic

Predicting Iron Deficiencies Using Routine Complete Blood Cell Count Parameters: A Machine Learning Approach and Evaluation.

Background/Objectives: Iron deficiency remains a prevalent condition, needing specific laboratory tests for diagnosis. This study aimed to evaluate whether routine complete blood cell count (CBC) parameters can be used within a machine learning framework to predict low ferritin and low transferrin saturation, used as biochemical markers of altered iron status, potentially supporting more targeted laboratory test utilization. Methods: In this single-center retrospective outpatient study, we analyzed 32,437 records from subjects undergoing both complete blood cell count and iron metabolism testi

Pilot assessment of point-of-care differential white blood cell count analysers in schoolchildren with schistosomiasis.

Public health monitoring of schistosomiasis needs appropriate field-based technology, so to expand this portfolio, we conducted a first pilot assessment of point-of-care differential white blood cell count analysers. In total, 120 Malawian primary school children were examined with six key haematological parameters recorded. A notable proportion had abnormal differential white blood cell profiles with eosinophilia (48.3%) positively associated with schistosomiasis (OR 3.2, 95% CI 1.3 to 7.7). Whilst costs of equipment and associated tests were non-trivial, both machine performance and haematol
