BACKGROUND: This study reports relationships between suicidal behavior and its risk factors in prepubertal children and whole blood and platelet serotonin-related measures.

In contrast to congenital platelet disorders, which are rare, acquired platelet dysfunctions are more common in clinical practice. Their main causes are medications and systemic/hematologic diseases. By recent advanced techniques, blood platelets have proved to be varied in size and metabolism in various hematologic disorders. We examined platelet volume and intraplatelet adenine nucleotides in 36 patients with various hematologic disorders in order to clarify the quantitative platelet abnormalities. A substantial number of severely injured patients are under the influence of alcohol, making it important to understand the effects of acute alcoholic intoxication on the clotting mechanism. Twenty healthy volunteers ingested commercial liquor over a four-hour period and were observed for another three hours. Peak blood alcohol levels were above 200 mg/dL in four subjects and between 100 and 200 mg/dL in 12. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Blood platelets are involved in primary and secondary hemostasis and thus maintain the integrity of the vasculature. They circulate with an average lifespan of 5-9 days in humans. Thus, the body must generate and clear platelets daily to maintain normal physiological blood platelet counts. Known platelet clearance mechanisms include antibody-mediated clearance by spleen macrophages, as in immune thrombocytopenia, and platelet consumption due to massive blood loss.
