The interplay between heart failure, metabolism and body composition.

A complex interplay exists between heart failure, metabolic status and body composition. The idiosyncrasies of these relationships are poorly understood, but they offer prognostic value and potential clinical utility. Current understanding of this relationship and known clinical value are discussed in this article.

Body composition and skeletal health: too heavy? Too thin?

The relationship between body composition and skeletal metabolism has received growing recognition. Low body weight is an established risk factor for fracture. The effect of obesity on skeletal health is less well defined. Extensive studies in patients with anorexia nervosa and obesity have illuminated many of the underlying biologic mechanisms by which body composition modulates bone mass. This review examines the relationship between body composition and bone mass through data from recent research studies throughout the weight spectrum ranging from anorexia nervosa to obesity.

The association between abdominal body composition and vascular calcification.

Subclinical cardiovascular disease (CVD) may be associated with both adipose and skeletal muscle tissues in the abdomen. Accordingly, we examined whether subcutaneous, intermuscular, and visceral adipose tissue, as well as abdominal lean muscle, were associated with the presence and extent of vascular calcification in multiple vascular beds. Three hundred and ninety four patients (58.1% men) underwent electron beam computed tomography (EBCT) scans as part of routine health maintenance screening. The coronary and carotid calcium scores were analyzed at the time of the scan, whereas the other ca

Growth and body composition in type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Over the last 50 years the prognosis for growth and pubertal development in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has improved considerably. The early reports of Mauriac's syndrome were related not only to relative deficiency of insulin but also reduced caloric intake. Improved insulin delivery and liberalisation of caloric intake has resulted in improved growth, but subtle abnormalities persist. The frequently reported increased height at diagnosis may relate to prior hyperinsulinaemia and genetic background with respect to lDDM2 the insulin gene VNTR. Subsequent growth faltering is t

Predicting body composition from anthropometry in pre-adolescent children.

The objectives of this paper were to: a) evaluate the accuracy and precision of previously published pediatric body composition prediction equations and b) develop additional prediction equations from a large, heterogeneous group of Caucasian (n = 133) and African-American (n = 69) children. The combined cohort of 202 children included a wide range of ages (4.0-10.9 y), weights (14.0-70.8 kg), fat mass (FM: 1.2-28.5 kg) and percent body fat (% body fat: 6.2-49.6%). Skinfold measurements were obtained using a Lange caliper and body fat was measured with a Lunar DPX-L densitometer. The previousl

The role of body composition measurements in wasting syndromes.

Wasting is a state of nonvolitional weight loss that frequently afflicts patients with cancer or those infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. Body composition measurements afford a more clinically relevant assessment of an individual's functional capacity, energy stores, and prognosis. Several techniques of body composition measurements exist, each with selected advantages and disadvantages. This review summarizes the methods and the utility of body composition analysis.

Aspects of neuroregulation of body composition and insulin secretion.

Perturbances in the autonomic nervous control of different target tissues (e.g. endocrine pancreas, brown adipose tissue) are present in the genetically obese (fa/fa) rat. These disorders are probably secondary to central dysregulation(s). In view of the reported effects of CRF in stimulating sympathetic nerve-mediated mechanisms while inhibiting vagus nerve-mediated ones, ovine CRF (oCRF) was administered for 7 days into the cerebral ventricles of fa/fa rats. oCRF treatment stopped the excessive weight gain of the obese animals. The oCRF effect was unrelated to changes in food intake, as the

Nutritional status and body composition of adolescent female gymnasts.

Nutritional status and body composition of 26 young female gymnasts (average age 12 years) were studied. The body fat percentage (15% of total body weight) is low, still consistent with an excellent health. The caloric intake is lower (1552 kcal/day) than that recommended for their age group, however it is still within the standard by body weight (43 kcal/kg). They show and insufficient assumption of carbohydrates (47.7%), mineral salts and vitamins, so that a more detailed alimentary information is required in order to avoid undesired consequences on sport performance and growth rate.

Moving Beyond CT Body Composition Analysis: Using Style Transfer for Bringing CT-Based Fully-Automated Body Composition Analysis to T2-Weighted MRI Sequences.

OBJECTIVES: Deep learning for body composition analysis (BCA) is gaining traction in clinical research, offering rapid and automated ways to measure body features like muscle or fat volume. However, most current methods prioritize computed tomography (CT) over magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study presents a deep learning approach for automatic BCA using MR T2-weighted sequences. METHODS: Initial BCA segmentations (10 body regions and 4 body parts) were generated by mapping CT segmentations from body and organ analysis (BOA) model to synthetic MR images created using an in-house traine
