Body fat distribution has weight-independent effects on clinical, hormonal, and metabolic features of women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

This study was performed to investigate whether different patterns of body fat distribution may have distinct effects on the clinical, hormonal, and metabolic features of women with clinical hyperandrogenism such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Ninety-seven consecutive women with PCOS were included in the study after assessment of gynecological and obesity history and careful clinical examination. Women were divided into three tertile groups based on the waist to hip ratio (WHR). Those with peripheral body fat distribution (P-BFD) had a WHR of less than 0.80, those with intermediate body

Imprinting of female offspring with testosterone results in insulin resistance and changes in body fat distribution at adult age in rats.

In women, a relative hyperandrogenicity is statistically associated with insulin resistance and centralization of body fat, which are predictors for the development of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of androgenization of newborn female rats on insulin sensitivity at adult age. To mimic the neonatal androgen peak normally observed in male rats, female pups were administered one high dose of testosterone (T) subcutaneously within 3 h after birth. They were then given back to their mothers and followed to adult age. At the end of the week

The effect of hyperlipidemia and body fat distribution on subclinical left ventricular function in obesity: a cardiovascular magnetic resonance study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is often associated with multiple comorbidities. However, whether obese subjects with hyperlipidemia in the absence of other complications have worse cardiac indices than metabolically healthy obese subjects is unclear. Therefore, we aimed to determine the effect of hyperlipidemia on subclinical left ventricular (LV) function in obesity and to evaluate the association of cardiac parameters with body fat distribution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-two adults were recruited and divided into 3 groups: obesity with hyperlipidemia (n = 24, 14 males), obesity without hyperlipide

Body fat distribution in obesity and the association with falls: A cohort study of Brazilian women aged 60 years and over.

OBJECTIVES: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of falls in older women; however, it is not certain how body fat distribution affects this relationship. This study examined the association between android and gynoid obesity and the incidence of falls in women aged 60 years and over. STUDY DESIGN: Participants were recruited from the community in Brasilia, Brazil. At baseline, participants underwent obesity screening using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Participants identified as obese (body fat percentage >42 %) were classified as android or gynoid type, based on the median of the

Gender differences in GH response to GHRH+ARG in lipodystrophic patients with HIV: a key role for body fat distribution.

OBJECTIVE: Gender influence on GH secretion in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients is poorly known. DESIGN AND METHODS: To determine the effect of gender, we compared GH response to GH-releasing hormone plus arginine (GHRH+Arg), and body composition in 103 men and 97 women with HIV and lipodystrophy. The main outcomes were IGF1, basal GH, GH peak and area under the curve (AUC) after GHRH+Arg, body composition, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT). RESULTS: Men had lower GH peak and AUC than women (P<0.001). Of the study population, 21% of wome

Phenotypic heterogeneity in body fat distribution in patients with congenital generalized lipodystrophy caused by mutations in the AGPAT2 or seipin genes.

Congenital generalized lipodystrophy (CGL) is a rare autosomal recessive syndrome characterized by extreme paucity of adipose tissue since birth, acanthosis nigricans, severe insulin resistance, marked hypertriglyceridemia, and early-onset diabetes mellitus. Recently, we reported mutations in the 1-acylglycerol-3-phosphate O-acyltransferase 2 (AGPAT2) gene in CGL pedigrees linked to chromosome 9q34 (CGL1 subtype), and mutations in the Seipin gene were reported in pedigrees linked to chromosome 11q13 (CGL2 subtype). Whether the two subtypes have differences in body fat distribution has not been

Body fat distribution and its risk for cardiovascular events in 10 years: Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil).

Body fat distribution seems to have different effects in cardiovascular diseases (CVD). We aimed to estimate the associations between lower limbs and trunk fat ratio and the 10-year CVD risk, and isolated risk factors in men and women. A total of 10,917 participants from ELSA-Brasil were eligible for this cross-sectional study. Associations between lower limb/trunk fat ratio with the percentage of 10-year CVD risk - according to the Framingham Risk Score - and its risk factors (systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol, diabetes, and use of antihypertensive medication) wer

Common genetic variants highlight the role of insulin resistance and body fat distribution in type 2 diabetes, independent of obesity.

We aimed to validate genetic variants as instruments for insulin resistance and secretion, to characterize their association with intermediate phenotypes, and to investigate their role in type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk among normal-weight, overweight, and obese individuals. We investigated the association of genetic scores with euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp- and oral glucose tolerance test-based measures of insulin resistance and secretion and a range of metabolic measures in up to 18,565 individuals. We also studied their association with T2D risk among normal-weight, overweight, and obese in

Comprehensive identification of pleiotropic loci for body fat distribution using the NHGRI-EBI Catalog of published genome-wide association studies.

We conducted a hypothesis-free cross-trait analysis for waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index (WHRadjBMI ) loci derived through genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Summary statistics from published GWAS were used to capture all WHRadjBMI single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and their proxy SNPs were identified. These SNPs were used to extract cross-trait associations between WHRadjBMI SNPs and other traits through the NHGRI-EBI GWAS Catalog. Pathway analysis was conducted for pleiotropic WHRadjBMI SNPs. We found 160 WHRadjBMI SNPs and 3675 proxy SNPs. Cross-trait analysis iden

Changes in Body Fat Distribution on Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry in Black South Africans Starting First-Line Antiretroviral Therapy.

Long-term use of antiretroviral therapy (ART) increases the risk of developing lipodystrophy. Few studies from Africa have used longitudinal data to assess the development of lipoatrophy and lipohypertrophy. We use clinical anthropometry and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) to describe changes in body fat distribution over a 24-month period in individuals initiated on ART. A convenience sample of black South Africans (55 men and 132 women) were recruited and followed for 24 months after commencing ART. Body fat distribution was assessed using anthropometric measurements and DEXA scans a

Mildly compromised tetrahydrobiopterin cofactor biosynthesis due to Pts variants leads to unusual body fat distribution and abdominal obesity in mice.

Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) is an essential cofactor for the aromatic amino acid hydroxylases, alkylglycerol monooxygenase, and nitric oxide synthases (NOS). Inborn errors of BH4 metabolism lead to severe insufficiency of brain monoamine neurotransmitters while augmentation of BH4 by supplementation or stimulation of its biosynthesis is thought to ameliorate endothelial NOS (eNOS) dysfunction, to protect from (cardio-) vascular disease and/or prevent obesity and development of the metabolic syndrome. We have previously reported that homozygous knock-out mice for the 6-pyruvolytetrahydropterin sy

Serum leptin in obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome is correlated with body weight and fat distribution but not with androgen and insulin levels.

Leptin is a hormone produced in the adipose tissue and its concentrations in peripheral blood are significantly correlated with the amount of body fat. Whether other factors, including the pattern of body fat distribution and several hormones (such as insulin, sex steroids, and glucocorticoids), may be involved in the regulation of circulating blood leptin levels is controversial. Women with the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are hyperandrogenic and most of them are characterized by hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, and obesity, particularly the visceral phenotype. To assess the potentia

The association of body composition and fat distribution with hypertension in community-dwelling older adults: the Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program.

BACKGROUND: A significant proportion of the global burden of disability and premature mortality has caused by hypertension. It seems that the relationship between obesity and hypertension is not only associated with excessive body fat mass (FM) but also with body adipose distribution patterns. The present study investigated the association between regional fat distribution using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and hypertension in older adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed using the data from Bushehr Elderly Health Program (BEH) on a total of 2419 participants aged 60 and

Ultrasound evaluation of quadriceps muscle thickness and body fat distribution in children receiving maintenance hemodialysis: a cross-sectional case-control study.

UNLABELLED: Children on hemodialysis (HD) are at multifactorial nutritional risk. Nutritional assessment in these children is challenging because conventional anthropometric and dietary indicators are influenced by growth failure, chronic inflammation, and fluid shifts. Ultrasound (US)-based muscle assessment has emerged as a practical bedside method for evaluating muscle mass, while data on US-derived fat distribution in this population are limited. This cross-sectional case-control study was conducted at a tertiary HD center and enrolled 42 children on HD and 42 age- and sex-matched apparent

Impact of Body Adiposity (Lean and Fat Mass Distribution) on Bone Mineral Density in Postmenopausal Indian Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Osteoporosis and obesity are prevalent health conditions that share overlapping risk factors and physiological consequences. After menopause, hormonal changes impact both bone strength and fat distribution. Although fat mass (FM) and lean mass (LM) are important components of body composition, their separate effects on bone mineral density (BMD) are not well understood, especially among Indians. Objective The main objective of this study is to assess how body adiposity, such as FM and LM, is related to BMD in postmenopausal Indian women. Methods A total of 36 postmenopausal women pa

The association of body composition and fat distribution with dysmobility syndrome in community-dwelling older adults: Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Dysmobility Syndrome (DS) is characterized as an accumulation of clinical risk factors for functional disability, such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and obesity. Neurological disorders that affect the motor and sensory systems can also contribute to the condition, resulting in gait and muscle strength disturbances, as well as a history of falls and fractures. The study aimed to determine the association between fat distribution in different body areas and the odds of older adults developing DS, as there is still uncertainty about the accumulation of fat in which area i
