STUDY DESIGN: Rectal cancer patients were invited to complete a questionnaire aimed at evaluating their current body image and sex life 3 and 6 months after surgical treatment. In addition, the possible impact of a stoma was investigated. The relevant pre-operative situation was determined retrospectively.
RESULTS: The patient's body image was appreciably impaired in both sexes. Women tended to lament a reduction in their physical attractiveness, men a loss of virility. In the subsequent months, the body image in women tended to become more positive, but remained unchanged in men. Stoma patie

Major surgery and associated experiences in critical care settings affect patients' perceptions of their body images. This paper discusses several colloquial terms related to body image used in interviews by elderly patients following major surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm. The terms 'badly failed, and well mended', and 'out of sorts', and 'in tune with my body' recurred. These referred to perceptions related to body weight or strength and bodily competence and control, respectively. Patients had difficulty explaining these colloquial terms in other words, i.e. synonyms were not readily a

A nonclinical sample of 102 women students were given the BULIT-R to measure bulimic symptomatology and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire, a multidimensional measure of body-image parameters. Statistically significant relationships between Appearance Evaluation, Appearance Orientation, and Illness Orientation subscales of the two inventories were identified. These findings indicate that women university students reporting higher scores on bulimic symptoms are more likely to report a general unhappiness with their physical appearance.

"Spectatoring" refers to a cognitive self-absorption, wherein individuals fixate on and carefully monitor personal body parts and/or the adequacy of personal sexual functioning. To examine this process within a university population, undergraduate and graduate students (108 male and 140 female) filled out questionnaires that assessed body image, sexual knowledge, global sexual attitudes (i.e., liberal-conservative), general psychological adjustment, and frequency of sexual behaviors. Multiple regression analyses were used to determine if spectatoring, operationalized by measures of body image,

BACKROUND: Body image during pregnancy is an important psychosocial factor that influences maternal well-being. Emerging evidence suggests that both social media exposure and body mass index (BMI) may shape body image perceptions during this period. This study examined the associations between social media use, BMI, and body image in pregnant women. METHODS: This cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study was conducted with 272 pregnant women recruited through convenience sampling from the gynecology and obstetrics outpatient clinics of a state hospital in the Mediterranean region o

OBJECTIVE: Narcissism may play a role in shaping body image concerns. Here we examined the relationships between narcissism (i.e., agentic extraversion, antagonism, narcissistic neuroticism, leadership/authority, exhibitionism/entitlement) and body image concerns and disturbances (i.e., drive for thinness, drive for muscularity, eating disorder symptoms, body mass index, current/desired fat, and current/desired muscularity).
METHODS: Mechanical Turk workers from the USA (N = 430; 64% male) completed the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire, the Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale, th

Eating disorders (EDs) represent a disparate group of mental health problems that significantly impair physical health or psychosocial functioning. The aim of this study was to present some evidence about the prevalence of eating-disordered behavior (EDB) in adolescents, and explore its associations with body image (BI), body composition (BC) and physical activity (PA) in this age group. Data from 780 adolescents participating in a health behavior in school-aged children (HBSC) study conducted in Slovakia in 2018 were used (mean age 13.5 ± 1.3; 56% boys). Differences in mean values of numerica

Sociocultural models of the development and maintenance of body image disturbance and the promotion of positive body image highlight the role of distal structural and proximal interpersonal factors. The aims of this paper are to examine the theoretical and conceptual basis for targeting sociocultural factors at both structural and interpersonal levels in prevention efforts to reduce body dissatisfaction and promote positive body image, and review relevant empirical evidence to date. Evidence suggests that sociocultural frameworks are useful for grounding efforts for the reduction of body dissa

Our physical and psychological well-being is significantly influenced by how we perceive our body, in addition to our thoughts and emotions associated with it. Dysfunctional body perceptions and attitudes play a key role in the development and maintenance of severe conditions such as eating disorders in both males and females. Given its relevance, some attempts have been made to improve body image assessment methods in terms of perceptual accuracy and body satisfaction taking advantage of technological advances such as virtual reality. However, existing applications have mainly focused on wome

Emerging evidence highlights the intricate link between identity and one's body, however, integrative longitudinal research on this identity-body interplay is lacking. The current study used three-wave longitudinal data (Time 1: N = 403; 52.1% female; Mage = 14.85, SD = 0.89, range = 13-19 years) spanning two years (2019-2021; T1 and T2 being pre-pandemic, T3 peri-pandemic) to identify identity trajectory classes and examine their co-development with negative and positive body image and various body-related variables (i.e., sociocultural pressures, internalization of appearance ideals, self-ob

OBJECTIVE: Research on the prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in individuals with eating disorders (EDs) is scarce. Nonweight-related appearance concerns, which can be considered as variants of BDD concerns, have also rarely been examined in EDs. This study therefore investigates BDD prevalence and nonweight-related appearance concerns in EDs.
METHOD: One hundred individuals with EDs (49 inpatients with anorexia nervosa, 51 inpatients with bulimia nervosa) completed structured diagnostic interviews and self-report questionnaires.
RESULTS: Twelve individuals with EDs (12.0%) suffere

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are frequent among elite performers of certain sports or physical activities; however, little is known about non-professional performers.
METHOD: 113 female non-elite ballet dancers, 54 female gymnasium users, 44 male non-competitive body builders, 105 female controls and 30 male controls were evaluated using the Body Uneasiness Test, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Eating Disorder Examination 12th edition (EDE-12).
RESULTS: Non-elite ballet dancers reported the highest prevalence of eating disorders (anorexia nervosa 1.8

BACKGROUND: Previous neuroimaging studies have demonstrated abnormalities in visual body image processing in anorexia and bulimia nervosa, possibly underlying body image disturbance in these disorders. Although cognitive behavioural interventions have been shown to be successful in improving body image disturbance in eating disorders, no randomized controlled study has yet analysed treatment-induced changes in neuronal correlates of visual body image processing.
METHOD: Altogether, 32 females with eating disorders were randomly assigned either to a manualized cognitive behavioural body image

Repeated exposures to thin-idealized body shapes may alter women's perceptions of what normal (e.g., accepted) and ideal (e.g., desired) bodies in a cultural environment look like. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether exposure to thin and round body shapes may change the subsequent esthetic appreciation of others' bodies and the perceptual and cognitive-affective dimensions of self-body image in patients suffering from anorexia nervosa (AN). Thirteen AN patients and 13 matched healthy controls were exposed to pictures of either thin or round unfamiliar body models and, befor

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) disrupts fluid and electrolyte homeostasis through hyperglycemia-induced osmotic diuresis and insulin resistance, yet the interplay between electrolyte shifts, renal stress, and environmental context remains incompletely characterized-particularly in arid regions. To investigate the impact of T2D on serum electrolytes and renal function markers, and to explore their associations with metabolic and hemodynamic parameters in an Iraqi outpatient cohort.
METHODS: In this case-control study, 100 T2D patients and 100 age- and sex-matched non-diabetic contr

Using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), we examined the bidirectional relationship between body-focused inspiration content and body image and disordered eating urges, as well as the potential moderating effect of gender on these relationships. Undergraduate men and women (n = 858; 78.3% women) reported their momentary exposure to thinspiration, fitspiration, and fatspiration content, body dissatisfaction, body objectification, body appreciation, urges to restrict food intake, and urges to exercise, six times a day for seven days. Multilevel analyses revealed that viewing thinspiration co

Background/Objectives: Sociocultural attitudes toward appearance and body image are important components of women's psychological well-being, particularly in the context of physical activities involving body exposure, such as pole dance. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to compare body image and sociocultural attitudes toward appearance between women practicing pole dance and women not engaged in this activity, and to examine the associations between these variables. Methods: The study included 207 women practicing pole dance (PDG) in clubs and schools across Poland and 180 women not
