The impact of body mass index on metatarsalgia surgical outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have suggested that an increased body mass index (BMI) is a negative factor for forefoot plantar pain but its influence in the surgical correction of metatarsalgia is unknown. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the influence of the BMI on the surgical outcomes of metatarsalgia. It has been hypothesized that the higher the BMI, the worse the functional outcomes after metatarsalgia surgical treatment at one year follow-up. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study that included all patients operated on for third rocker metatarsalgia was conducte

Longitudinal changes in body mass index in children with craniopharyngioma.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the relationship of body mass index at presentation and pituitary status with long-term changes in BMI over a period of 5 years. STUDY DESIGN: Craniopharyngioma patients (n = 25) attending a tertiary pediatric endocrine center were divided into three groups based on their BMI at presentation [BMI ≥ 2 standard deviation scores (SDS), 0-1.99 SDS, and <0 SDS) and then analyzed for trends of BMI over a period of up to 5 years. RESULTS: Median (interquartile range) BMI SDS and hypopituitarism at presentation versus at the 5-year follow-up were as follows: BMI SDS ≥ 2 gr

Benign breast diseases and body mass index: is there a correlation?

Breast cancer is the leading cancer affecting women in America. Body mass index (BMI) is a known risk factor for the development of breast cancer. The relationship of BMI to benign breast disease is less clear. In addition, certain benign pathologies are associated with an increased risk of cancer. We sought to measure the incidence of benign pathologies and to correlate these findings with BMI and age. All patients undergoing breast biopsy at our center from 2000 to 2005 were identified (n = 1717). Age, BMI, family history, sex, and diagnosis were determined. Patients were grouped into BMI, a

The effects of maternal body mass index on pregnancy outcome.

The increasing prevalence of obesity is presenting a critical challenge to healthcare services. We examined the effect of Body Mass Index in early pregnancy on adverse pregnancy outcome. We performed a population register-based cohort study using data from the North Western Perinatal survey (N = 99,403 babies born during 2004-2006), based at The University of Manchester, UK. The main outcome measures were Caesarean section delivery, preterm birth, neonatal death, stillbirth, Macrosomia, small for gestational age and large for gestational age. The risk of preterm birth was reduced by almost 10%

The association between body mass index and the severity of cholecystitis.

BACKGROUND: Severe cholecystitis occurs more frequently in males, and the cause of this discrepancy is unknown. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on 910 consecutive patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for cholecystitis. The patients were classified according to body mass index (BMI) as obese (n = 354, BMI > or =25 kg/m(2)) and nonobese (n = 556; BMI <25). RESULTS: In males, there was a significant negative correlation between the BMI and the severity of cholecystitis; the proportion of complicated acute cholecystitis was higher in the nonobese patients (21.5%) comp

Body-mass index and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux in women.

BACKGROUND: Overweight and obese persons are at increased risk for gastroesophageal reflux disease. An association between body-mass index (BMI)--the weight in kilograms divided by the square of the height in meters - and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease in persons of normal weight has not been demonstrated. METHODS: In 2000, we used a supplemental questionnaire to determine the frequency, severity, and duration of symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease among randomly selected participants in the Nurses' Health Study. After categorizing women according to BMI as measured in 19

The clinical utility of maternal body mass index in pregnancy.

To describe maternal body mass index and to compare the use of maternal weight and body mass index for risk assessment at the initial prenatal visit, 6270 gravid women who were consecutively delivered of infants were studied. Body mass index increased with advancing maternal age, parity, and advancing gestational age and was significantly greater in black women than in nonblack women. Risks for the development of adverse outcome associated with maternal obesity, including development of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, fetal macrosomia, and shoulder dystocia, were comparably predicted by ei

Impact of Body Mass Index on Clinical Outcomes of LLETZ.

Background/Objectives: Large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ) is used as a standard treatment for cervical dysplasia. Although obesity is associated with reduced cervical screening participation and may complicate gynecologic procedures, evidence on the impact of body mass index (BMI) on LLETZ outcomes remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the association between BMI and clinical outcomes after LLETZ, with a particular focus on margin status. Methods: This retrospective single-center cohort study included 1397 patients who underwent LLETZ for cervical dysplasia between

Body mass index and risk of cancer in young women.

It is unclear how increasing body mass index (BMI) influences risk of cancer in young women. We used data from the Medical Birth, Patient and Cause of Death registers collected between 1982 and 2014 to determine the risk of obesity-related cancer types, breast cancer, all cancer and cancer-related death in relation to BMI in 1,386,725 women, aged between 18 and 45 years, in Sweden. During a median follow-up of 16.3 years (IQR 7.7-23.5), 9808 women developed cancer. The hazard ratio (HR) of endometrial and ovarian cancer increased with higher BMI from 1.08 (95% CI 0.93-1.24) and 1.08 (95% CI 0.

Trajectory of change in body mass index in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are some of the most common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's. Weight is a nutritional metric and can be affected by dysfunction of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This study aims to explore the change in trajectory of body mass index (BMI) in individuals with Parkinson's over the course of the disease including the prodromal and post-diagnostic periods. METHODS: This was a retrospective longitudinal study of data from participants from the PRIME Parkinson UK cross-sectional study. Participants were included if they had had one or more weights and

The Effect of Obesity and Body Mass Index on Hematologic Malignancies.

A thorough examination of the available literature has revealed a well-established association of obesity and high body mass index (BMI) with an increased risk of various types of cancers, including hematologic malignancies. Specifically, the studies reviewed indicate a clear correlation between obesity and an increased risk of leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndrome, and myeloproliferative diseases. Despite the established association of obesity and high BMI with hematologic malignancies, the underlying mechanisms remain largely undetermined. The development of hemato

Body mass index and migraine in adolescence: A nationwide study.

BACKGROUND: The association between body mass index (BMI) and migraine in adults has been well established. However, studies in children and adolescents are inconclusive. We aimed to study the association between BMI and migraine using a national dataset that comprises the electronic medical records of more than two million adolescents. METHODS: This study included all Israeli adolescents (57.7% males, 42.3% females; mean age 17 years) who were medically assessed before mandatory military service during 1990-2020. As part of the pre-recruitment medical assessment, all the adolescents were scr

Management of rivaroxaban in relation to bodyweight and body mass index.

Being overweight or obese is associated with a higher individual risk of venous thromboembolism and poorer postprocedural outcomes after hip or knee replacement surgery. In addition, there is evidence that obesity represents a significant driving factor for the current and projected prevalence of atrial fibrillation. Rivaroxaban and other direct oral anticoagulants offer fixed-dose regimens for these indications. They do not require therapeutic drug monitoring or dose adjustment according to the weight of the patient. However, primary care physicians seem to be hesitant to accept the concept o
