Genetic architecture supports mosaic brain evolution and independent brain-body size regulation.

The mammalian brain consists of distinct parts that fulfil different functions. Finlay and Darlington have argued that evolution of the mammalian brain is constrained by developmental programs, suggesting that different brain parts are not free to respond individually to selection and evolve independent of other parts or overall brain size. However, comparisons among mammals with matched brain weights often reveal greater differences in brain part size, arguing against strong developmental constraints. Here we test these hypotheses using a quantitative genetic approach involving over 10,000 mi

Body size, adult BMI gain and endometrial cancer risk: the multiethnic cohort.

The effect of body size and change in BMI on endometrial cancer risk across different racial/ethnic groups has not been studied. We examined the association between body size and endometrial cancer risk and potential effect modification of other risk factors among 50,376 women in the Multiethnic Cohort Study. During 10.3 years of follow-up, 463 endometrial cancer cases were identified. Epidemiologic data were collected from the baseline questionnaire. "BMI change" was defined as the percentage of body mass index change from age 21 to the time of recruitment. Women who were heavier at age 21 or

Body size and obesity patterns in Caboclo populations from Pará, Amazonia, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: In many developing countries overweight, obesity and obesity-related morbidity are becoming a problem of increasing public health importance. The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in body size and body composition with age in adults of the Caboclo populations from the Brazilian Amazon as well as to examine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in adults aged 20-75 years, taking into account recent trends for the whole country. Caboclo are genetically and culturally admixed rural peasant groups that live along the Amazon River and its tributaries in Brazil, and

Nucleolar size in choroidal and ciliary body melanomas and corresponding hepatic metastases.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between hepatic metastasis and the mean diameter of the 10 largest nucleoli (MLN) in uveal melanoma. METHODS: A cross-sectional histopathological analysis of 37 metastases (13 surgical or needle biopsies, 24 autopsies) and corresponding primary choroidal and ciliary body melanomas was conducted, using statistical tests appropriate for paired data. The largest nucleoli were measured from digital photographs of silver-stained sections along a 5-mm-wide linear field. Confounders considered were presence of epithelioid cells and microvascu

Body size, dairy consumption, puberty, and risk of testicular germ cell tumors.

The etiology of testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) is poorly understood, with cryptorchidism and family history being the only well-established risk factors. Body size, age at puberty, and dairy consumption, however, have been suggested to be related to TGCTs. To clarify the relation of these variables to TGCT risk and to one another, the authors analyzed data from 767 cases and 928 controls enrolled in the Servicemen's Testicular Tumor Environmental and Endocrine Determinants Study (2002-2005). Overall, increased height was significantly related to risk (odds ratio (OR) = 1.83, 95% confidenc

Bone mass, skin color and body size among black and white women.

We investigated the relationship between bone mass and two variables, skin color and body size, that may contribute to the higher prevalence of osteoporosis among white than among black populations. From a sample of 36 black and 99 white women were obtained measurements of height, weight, skin color (Photovolt 670 reflectometer) and radial bone mineral content (BMC) and bone width (BW) (single photon absorptiometry). There was no significant correlation between skin reflectance and age-adjusted BMC in either population. Multiple regression models of BMC and BMC/BW on age, weight/height and ski

Urbanization, Metabolic Rate, and Body Size Variation of a Common Urban Lizard.

AbstractHuman-induced rapid environmental change is intensifying globally. Urbanization, a major form of human-induced rapid environmental change, alters ecosystems and exposes wildlife to environmental changes, including pollution, altered ambient temperatures, changes in habitat structure, and resource shifts. These alterations can benefit particular species while imposing challenges to others, influencing their behavior, physiology, and morphology. Changes in resource availability and ambient temperature are particularly relevant for ectotherms, which are less independent of environmental c

Genes Versus Environment: Body Size Variation Among Recruitment Cohorts of Dungeness Crab.

Understanding the drivers of phenotypic variation is key to disentangling the evolutionary and environmental forces that shape patterns of trait variation within and among populations. In Dungeness crab, settlement-stage megalopae exhibit striking seasonal variation in body size, with early season cohorts consistently larger than later ones. This pattern may result from genetically distinct larval sources or environmentally induced plasticity following the temperature-size rule, which predicts larger body size at cooler temperatures. Here, we evaluated the relative contributions of these poten

Prognostic association supports indexing size measures in echocardiography by body surface area.

Body surface area (BSA) is the most commonly used metric for body size indexation of echocardiographic measures, but its use in patients who are underweight or obese is questioned (body mass index (BMI) < 18.5 kg/m2 or ≥ 30 kg/m2, respectively). We aim to use survival analysis to identify an optimal body size indexation metric for echocardiographic measures that would be a better predictor of survival than BSA regardless of BMI. Adult patients with no prior valve replacement were selected from the National Echocardiography Database Australia. Survival analysis was performed for echocardiograph

Association between body size-metabolic phenotype and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and significant fibrosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Body size-metabolic phenotype may help predict whether or not individuals with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) develop advanced liver disease. We studied the association of body size-metabolic phenotype with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and significant fibrosis. METHODS: Our cross-sectional study included 559 subjects (mean age of 53 years; women 51%) with biopsy-proven NAFLD. Clinical, genetic, and histological characteristic features of NAFLD were evaluated. The metabolically unhealthy phenotype was defined by the presence of two or more metabolic compon

Carotid body size measured by computed tomographic angiography in individuals born prematurely.

PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that the carotid bodies would be smaller in individuals born prematurely or exposed to perinatal oxygen therapy when compared individuals born full term that did not receive oxygen therapy. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on patients who underwent head/neck computed tomography angiography (CTA) at the Mayo Clinic between 10 and 40 years of age (n = 2503). Patients were identified as premature ( < 38 weeks) or receiving perinatal oxygen therapy by physician completion or billing codes (n = 16 premature and n = 7 receiving oxygen). Widest ax

Associations among body size across the life course, adult height and endometriosis.

STUDY QUESTION: Are body size across the life course and adult height associated with endometriosis? SUMMARY ANSWER: Endometriosis is associated with lean body size during childhood, adolescence and adulthood; tall total adult height; and tall sitting height. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The literature suggests that both adult body size and height are associated with endometriosis risk, but few studies have investigated the role of body size across the life course. Additionally, no study has investigated the relationships between components of height and endometriosis. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATIO

Exception Points and Body Size Contribute to Gender Disparity in Liver Transplantation.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Women are significantly less likely than men to receive a liver transplant and more likely to die on the waitlist. We investigated potential reasons for these disparities, including match run positioning and organ declines caused by small stature of female recipients. METHODS: We analyzed data from the United Network of Organ Sharing registry of candidates placed on the waitlist from May 10, 2007, through June 17, 2013. Primary outcomes included ranked in first position on a match run, having an organ declined while in first position, declining an organ while in first posit

Elevated blood pressure in adolescent girls: correlation to body size and composition.

BACKGROUND: To improve understanding of the pathophysiology of hypertension in adolescents and pave the way for risk stratification, studies have sought to determine the correlates of blood pressure (BP). Inconsistencies in dependent and independent variables have resulted in an elusive consensus. The aim of this report is to examine an inclusive array of correlates of BP, as a continuous (systolic and diastolic BP) and a dichotomous variable. METHODS: Subjects were a school-based sample of 730 urban, mostly African American, non-referred 6th and 7th grade girls. To find independent correlate

Body size throughout the life course and mammographic density in Mexican women.

Mammographic density (MD) is a strong risk factor for breast cancer, but the biological mechanism underlying this association is not clear. Current adult body mass index (BMI) is inversely associated with percent MD; however, few studies have included Hispanic women or evaluated associations with measures of body fatness earlier in life. ESMaestras was established in 2006, when 28,345 women ages ≥35 responded to a detailed questionnaire that assessed possible disease risk factors, including body fatness in childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. In 2007, 2084 ESMaestras participants under

Body size development of captive and free-ranging Leopard tortoises (Geochelone pardalis).

The growth and weight development of Leopard tortoise hatchings (Geochelone pardalis) kept at the Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP), Qatar, was observed for more than four years, and compared to data in literature for free-ranging animals on body weight or carapace measurements. The results document a distinctively faster growth in the captive animals. Indications for the same phenomenon in other tortoise species (Galapagos giant tortoises, G. nigra; Spur-thighed tortoises, Testudo graeca; Desert tortoises, Gopherus agassizi) were found in the literature. The cause of the high growth rate

External craniofacial features, body size, and renal morphology in prenatal brachyrrhine mice.

The Brachyrrhine (Br) semidominant mouse mutant provides a useful model for studying factors responsible for midfacial hypoplasia. In order to determine early morphogenetic events responsible for midfacial hypoplasia in these mice, prenatal mutants must be differentiated from nonaffected littermates. The purpose of this study was to determine whether prenatal offspring from Br matings could be separated morphologically into groups of normal or midfacially deficient embryos. Thirty embryos resulting from Br matings were collected between day 15 and birth (Theiler stages 23-27). Qualitative obse

Differences between sexes in maximum jaw opening when corrected to body size.

According to linear interincisal measurements, women have a smaller maximum jaw opening than men. In this study the difference was 2.7%. In contrast, epidemiological surveys indicate that women have a greater mobility of joints and generally more joint laxity. Covariate analysis was used to test for the difference between sexes in mean maximum passive opening adjusted according to group mean differences in other parameters of body size. The net result was that the values became more equal between sexes. A second method, employing a geometric estimation for the angle of maximum jaw opening, sho
