Pathologically elevated body core temperature, measured at the death scene, is an important finding in medico-legal investigation of violent deaths. An abnormally high rectal temperature at any death scene may point to an underlying pathology, the influence of certain drugs or a hidden cerebral traumatism, and death by suffocation which would remain undetected without further medico-legal investigations. Furthermore, hyperthermia and fever, if unrecognized, may result in an erroneous forensic estimation of time since death in the early postmortem period by the "Henssge method." By a retrospect

We examined whether an increase in skin temperature or the rate of increase in core body temperature influences the relationship between minute ventilation (Ve) and core temperature during prolonged exercise in the heat. Thirteen subjects exercised for 60 min on a cycle ergometer at 50% of peak oxygen uptake while wearing a suit perfused with water at 10 degrees C (T10), 35 degrees C (T35), or 45 degrees C (T45). During the exercise, esophageal temperature (Tes), skin temperature, heart rate (HR), Ve, tidal volume, respiratory frequency (f), respiratory gases, blood pressure (BP), and blood la

Body surface zones or 'thermatomes', whose temperature is regulated by a single spinal segment, were investigated by thermography in the rat hindlimb. First, the spatial relation between the dermatome delineated by dye extravasation and the corresponding thermatome was investigated in rats pretreated with intravenous application of Evans blue. Electrical stimulation of the spinal nerves and sympathetic trunk segments at L3 and L5 induced a distal dominant temperature decrease. In contrast, Evans blue extravasation appeared in the medial (in L3) and lateral (in L5) paw only by electrical stimul

Intermittent measurement of cardiac output is routine in the critically ill surgical patient. A new catheter allows real-time continuous measurement of cardiac output. This study evaluated the impact of body temperature variation on the accuracy of these measurements compared to standard intermittent bolus thermodilution technique. This prospective study in a university hospital surgical intensive care unit included 20 consecutive trauma patients. Data were collected with pulmonary artery catheters, which allowed both continuous (COC) and bolus (COB) thermodilution measurements. The catheter w

Multisensor (7-14) thermocouple thermometry is used at our department for temperature measurement with our 'Coaxial TEM' regional hyperthermia system. A special design of the thermometry system with high resolution (0.005 degrees C) and fast data-acquisition (all channels within 320 ms) together with a pulsed power technique allows assessment of specific absorption rate (SAR) information in patients along catheter tracks. A disadvantage of thermocouple thermometry, EM interference, is almost entirely eliminated by application of absorbing ferrite beads around the probe leads. We investigated t

Small doses of morphine induce a hyperthermic response that does not change with repeated injections, whereas higher doses induce a hypothermia that changes to hyperthermia with repeated treatment. Experiment 1 confirmed these results in ovariectomized rats, using 6 repeated injections of morphine at 5 or 30 mg/kg. Using the same treatment regimen. Experiment 2 showed that the low dose of morphine induced a transient suppression of LH levels followed by a hypersecretion, and that repeated injections did not affect this response. The high dose (30 mg/kg) of morphine initially induced a sustaine

Single doses of d-amphetamine, chlorpheniramine or diazepam were combined with ethanol under two conditions: (i) in drug-naive mice and (ii) in mice which had been given a single dose of ethanol 72 hr previously. Ethanol was administered orally at doses of 6.0, 3.0 or 1.5 g/kg; doses of d-amphetamine, chlorpheniramine or diazepam were given intraperitoneally. Three parameters were measured; changes in rectal temperature, forced motor coordination, as evaluated by rotarod performance and concentrations of ethanol in blood. d-Amphetamine and chlorpheniramine attenuated the hypothermia induced by

One- to 7-day-old Holstein bull calves were anesthetized and cold-stressed until their core body temperature (CBT; colonic) was lowered by 10 C. The calves were then rewarmed in warm water, by heat pads or heat lamps, or allowed to recover naturally (unassisted). Temperatures of peripheral tissues, muscles, and the body core were recorded. The time required to lower the CBT of the cold-stressed calves was 168 +/- 11.7 minutes (mean +/- SE). Cold exposure caused a linear decrease in blood, colonic, rectal, and oral temperatures, whereas temperature decreases in the thigh and pectoral muscles, d

Fever should be treated according to the individual situation. Securing a sufficient fluid intake is the most important primary measure. The decrease of body temperature by physical means is efficient only in combination with drug therapy and presumes the control of blood circulation. Aminophenazon is the most efficient drug to lower fever. Metamizol should be prefered in children at risk for convulsive disorders. The combination of aminophenazon with phenothiazines can be recommended , prothazine is the drug of first choice in suitable cases a caudal treatment of fever with antiphlogistic dru

OBJECTIVE: Bradycardia is one of the common cardiac abnormalities in patients with eating disorders. It ensues from hypometabolism, which results from reduced caloric intake and consequential weight loss. Hypothermia is another consequence of hypometabolism. While at-rest metabolism and body mass index (BMI) are typically used to assess hypometabolism and estimate potential bradycardia, we hypothesised that body temperature, which is easy to measure, could also capture the presence of this threatening cardiovascular condition.
METHOD: We monitored heart rate continuously for 72 h, measured re

We aimed to use temperature and the area under temperature curve to represent the severity of abnormal body temperature of patients with septic shock and to observe their impact on the prognosis. Five hundred twenty-eight adult patients with septic shock admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) were analyzed. Within the first 24 hours and throughout the period in ICU, the maximum temperature (24hTmax, Tmax), lowest temperature (24hTmin, Tmin), and the temperature range (24hTmax-min, Tmax-min) were aggregated. Patients were divided into the survival group and the death group. Binary logistic regre

INTRODUCTION: Admission body temperature is a critical parameter in all trauma patients. Low admission temperature is strongly associated with adverse outcomes. We have previously shown, in a prospective study that low admission body temperature is common and associated with high mortality in hip fracture patients (Uzoigwe et al., 2014). However, no previous studies have evaluated whether admission temperature is an independent predictor of mortality in hip fracture patients after adjustment for the 7 recognised independent prognostic indicators (Maxwell et al., 2008).
METHODS: We retrospecti

Tourette syndrome is defined and characterized mainly by the presence of motor and phonic tics. Frequently, other medical, psychologic, and psychiatric symptoms coincide with Tourette syndrome. Despite extensive efforts extended over many years of research, the etiology leading to Tourette syndrome remains obscure. A number of hypotheses have been offered in the past to resolve the pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome. Based on the existence of an abnormal body temperature profile in patients with Tourette syndrome, an idiopathic hypothalamic disorder has been proposed to be involved in this a

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hyperthermia is a well-known factor for neurologic deterioration, morbidity, and mortality in the early phase of stroke. However, the timing, localization of lesion, origin of stroke, which may influence body temperature, have not been clearly established.
METHODS: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between body temperature and origin, lesion topography, and prognosis at 3 months after onset of stroke. Axillary temperature was taken every hour for 72 hours in 473 patients with supra- or infratentorial cerebral vascular lesion. The time at which

The thermal topography of the oral cavity of 11 women was mapped with thermocouples in early morning waking conditions. A reference thermocouple was placed in the vagina. No significant difference was found in the time required to reach a steady-state oral temperature and in the achieved steady-state temperature difference (Tv-To) in the preovulatory and postovulatory phases of the menstrual cycle. Location of the thermocouple in the oral cavity had a significant effect on steady-state temperature differences. After equilibration of oral thermometers, women breathed through their mouths for ex

Three cryosurgical units were compared on the basis of the ability of each unit to freeze the ciliary body of enucleated normal canine eyes. The coldest average temperatures reached were -13.4 C, -4.3 C, and -17.6 C. One of the units was then used to freeze the ciliary body in the left eye of 25 dogs for 5 minutes. Ciliary body temperatures were monitored every 15 s during cyclocryosurgery. In 18 eyes in situ, the coldest average temperature reached was -13.4 C. In 7 proptosed globes, the coldest average temperature reached was -13.8 C. The results were not significantly different (P less than

In the equine industry, monitoring of the reproduction cycle is key to be able to produce one foal per mare and per year. Ovulation detection is difficult partly due to the variability of the estrus length. Currently, the most reliable method for ovulation detection is transrectal ultrasonography. This technique, however, implies handling of the mare as well as veterinary costs. The aim of this experimentation is to study body temperature variations around ovulation. Nine reproduction cycles were monitored around ovulation. Transrectal ultrasonographies were performed each day as well as blood

This review discusses human thermoregulation during exercise and the measurement of body temperature in clinical and exercise settings. The thermoregulatory mechanisms play important roles in maintaining physiological homeostasis during rest and physical exercise. Physical exertion poses a challenge to thermoregulation by causing a substantial increase in metabolic heat production. However, within a non-thermolytic range, the thermoregulatory mechanisms are capable of adapting to sustain physiological functions under these conditions. The central nervous system may also rely on hyperthermia to
