Altered Ulnar Variance With Full-Body Weight-Bearing During Handstands With Upper Extremity Weight-Bearing CT.

PURPOSE: Ulnar variance (UV) is a radiographic measurement relating the articular surface heights of the distal radius and ulna. Abnormal UV increases the risk for wrist pathology; however, it only provides a static measurement of an inherently dynamic bony relationship that changes with wrist position and loading. The purpose of this study was to investigate how full-body weight-bearing affects UV using weight-bearing computed tomography (WBCT). METHODS: Ten gymnasts completed two 45-second scans inside a WBCT machine while performing a handstand on a flat platform (H) and parallettes (P). A

Increased body weight associated with prolactin secreting pituitary adenomas: weight loss with normalization of prolactin levels.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperprolactinaemia in humans may be associated with a high prevalence of obesity but the nature of this link is poorly defined. The aim of this study was to establish the relationship between hyperprolactinaemia and body weight in patients with prolactin-secreting pituitary tumours. DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective study of prolactinoma patients treated at the Endocrine Institute of the Tel Aviv Medical Center, Israel, during the period 1989-1996. Patients with clinically non-functioning pituitary macroadenomas (NFA) served as the control group. Data on demographic parameters,

Effects of multiple cycles of weight loss and regain on the body weight regulatory system in rats.

We studied the effects of multiple cycles of weight loss and regain on the defended body weight in rats. Thirty-six male Wistar rats were divided into three weight-matched groups: weight cyclers (n = 18), ad libitum-fed controls (n = 9), and maturity controls (n = 9). Cyclers underwent four rounds of 20% weight loss from 50% caloric restriction, each cycle followed by recovery to stable plateau weight on ad libitum feeding. Controls ate ad libitum. Maturity controls ate ad libitum and then weight cycled the final two rounds to evaluate the effect of age in later cycles. Cyclers' postdiet plate

The foetal thyroid of the dromedary: its relation to body weight and dimensions and to the weight of the Dam's thyroid.

Growth and iodine content of the thyroid glands in relation to body weight, length [total (BCVRT), crown-rump (CR), and curved crown-rump (CVR)], chest circumference (CC), and age were investigated in 83 camel foetuses from 70 to 355 days of gestation (mean gestation length 390 days). Weight and iodine content of the dam's thyroid were also studied. Highly significant (P less than 0.01) correlations of 0.883, 0.797, 0.798, 0.792, and 0.813 were obtained between foetal thyroid weights on the one hand and body weight, BCVRT, CR, CVR, and CC on the other hand. [Influence of body weight and weight increase on the development and severity of an EPH gestosis (author's transl)].

3385 consecutive records of deliveries at the Ist Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University Hospital, Vienna, were reviewed. Particular attention was paid to increased weight gain during pregnancy--defined as a total weight gain of more than 13,4 kg--and EPH-gestosis. Patients were put into one of two groups: (1) no increased weight gain during pregnancy, and (2) increased weight gain of over 13,4 kg. Each group was further divided into women with no or only slight symptoms of gestosis (gestosisindex 0 to 3) and gravidae with moderate or severe EPH-gestosis (gestosis index 4 or

Effect of a Low-Glycemic Index Nutritional Intervention on Body Weight and Selected Cardiometabolic Parameters in Children and Adolescents with Excess Body Weight and Dyslipidemia.

Excess body weight in pediatric patients and the resulting dyslipidemia, if left untreated, are a serious risk factor for cardiovascular disease in young adults. Despite this, there is still no effective and validated nutritional strategy for the treatment of overweight/obesity and comorbid dyslipidemia in children and adolescents. A low-glycemic index (LGI) diet may be recommended, but evidence for its effectiveness in the pediatric population is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of nutritional intervention in children and adolescents with excess body weight and

Clinical Utility of Body Weight Monitoring During Cisplatin-based Chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the most frequent adverse effects induced by cisplatin (CDDP). One clinical indicator of CDDP-induced AKI is urine output, which reflects water balance; however, urine collection can expose healthcare workers to anticancer drugs. An alternative monitoring approach for CDDP-induced AKI is weight-based assessment of fluid balance. Although previous studies have evaluated the relationship between body weight change and CDDP-induced AKI, few have evaluated the amount of water ingested. Therefore, we evaluated water intake, urine output, and body

A hypothalamic pathway for Augmentor α-controlled body weight regulation.

Augmentor α and β (Augα and Augβ) are newly discovered ligands of the receptor tyrosine kinases Alk and Ltk. Augα functions as a dimeric ligand that binds with high affinity and specificity to Alk and Ltk. However, a monomeric Augα fragment and monomeric Augβ also bind to Alk and potently stimulate cellular responses. While previous studies demonstrated that oncogenic Alk mutants function as important drivers of a variety of human cancers, the physiological roles of Augα and Augβ are poorly understood. Here, we investigate the physiological roles of Augα and Augβ by exploring mice deficient in

Body weight regulation via MT1-MMP-mediated cleavage of GFRAL.

GDNF-family receptor a-like (GFRAL) has been identified as the cognate receptor of growth/differentiation factor 15 (GDF15/MIC-1), considered a key signaling axis in energy homeostasis and body weight regulation. Currently, little is known about the physiological regulation of the GDF15-GFRAL signaling pathway. Here we show that membrane-bound matrix metalloproteinase 14 (MT1-MMP/MMP14) is an endogenous negative regulator of GFRAL in the context of obesity. Overnutrition-induced obesity increased MT1-MMP activation, which proteolytically inactivated GFRAL to suppress GDF15-GFRAL signaling, thu

Male HELLP pups experience sensorimotor delays and reduced body weight.

Offspring of Preeclampsia (PreE) and HELLP Syndrome are at an increased risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders. In the current study we sought to determine if offspring from experimental models of PreE and HELLP had evidence of early onset neurodevelopmental delay. Offspring from PreE, HELLP and normal pregnant dams were assessed in a battery of sensorimotor tests beginning on postnatal day (PND) 3. Male HELLP offspring showed altered behavior in the surface righting reflex on PND 3 and cliff avoidance task from PND 3-6 relative to other groups. Results suggest that there are sex diff

Oxygenation Impairment during Anesthesia: Influence of Age and Body Weight.

WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THIS TOPIC: During anesthesia oxygenation is impaired, especially in the elderly or obese, but the mechanisms are uncertain. WHAT THIS ARTICLE TELLS US THAT IS NEW: Pooled data were examined from 80 patients studied with multiple inert gas elimination technique and computed tomography. Oxygenation was impaired by anesthesia, more so with greater age or body mass index. The key contributors were low ventilation/perfusion ratio (likely airway closure) in the elderly and shunt (atelectasis) in the obese. BACKGROUND: Anesthesia is increasingly common in elderly and ove

Sex and body weight are major determinants of venlafaxine pharmacokinetics.

We assessed the effect of body weight and BMI on plasma concentrations of venlafaxine (VEN), O-desmethylvenlafaxine (ODVEN), active moiety (AM=VEN+ODVEN), and dose-corrected plasma concentrations (C/D). A database containing concentrations of VEN and ODVEN including 737 of 1594 eligible patients was analyzed. Analyses included sex, body weight, and BMI as well as concentrations of VEN, ODVEN, AM, and C/D. A positive correlation was detected between body weight and daily dosage (rs=0.168, P<0.001). A negative correlation was found between body weight and AM (rs=-0.124, P=0.001) and ODVEN (rs=-0

Cancers attributable to excess body weight in Canada in 2010.

INTRODUCTION: Excess body weight (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 25.00 kg/m2) is an established risk factor for diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, but its relationship to cancer is lesser-known. This study used population attributable fractions (PAFs) to estimate the cancer burden attributable to excess body weight in Canadian adults (aged 25+ years) in 2010. METHODS: We estimated PAFs using relative risk (RR) estimates from the World Cancer Research Fund International Continuous Update Project, BMI-based estimates of overweight (25.00 kg/m2-29.99 kg/m2) and obesity (30.00+ kg/m2) fr

Status of High Body Weight Among Nurse-Family Partnership Children.

PURPOSE: Increased prevalence of high levels of body weight in early childhood has become a public health concern, given its potential association with adult obesity and related comorbidities. Both socioeconomic status and race-ethnicity are related to increased prevalence. The purpose of this study was to identify additional risk factors common to children of low-income families; and to guide quality improvement initiatives within home visiting programs, potentially fostering more desirable physical development outcomes. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A cohort of children (n = 14,318) of all moth
