Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Bolivia: Simulation-Based Assessment of Control Strategies and Vaccination Requirements.

Examining the dissemination dynamics of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is critical for revising national response plans. We developed a stochastic susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered (SEIR) metapopulation model to simulate FMD outbreaks in Bolivia and explore how the national response plan impacts the dissemination among all susceptible species. We explored variations in the control strategies, mapped high-risk areas, and estimated the number of vaccinated animals during the reactive ring vaccination. Initial outbreaks ranged from 1 to 357 infected farms, with control measures implemented for

Antimicrobial Resistance in Hospital-acquired Bloodstream Infections among Children in a Pediatric Hospital in Bolivia.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing threat to global public health. In hospitals, infant mortality due to bacterial sepsis is associated with AMR. The epidemiology of AMR in Bolivia (a lower-middle-income country) has not been sufficiently discussed. The aim of this study was to analyze AMR patterns over 8 years at a pediatric hospital in patients with hospital-acquired bloodstream infections. METHODS: This is a retrospective and analytical revision of AMR in bacteria isolated from blood cultures, performed between 2012 and 2019, in a pediatric hospital in Bolivia. Data

Reach, experience, and acceptability of an abortion self-care intervention in Bolivia: a mixed-methods evaluation.

In 2018, Ipas Bolivia launched an abortion self-care (ASC) community intervention with the goal of increasing access to supportive, well-informed abortion support provided by community agents (CAs). Between September 2019 and July 2020, Ipas conducted a mixed-methods evaluation to assess the reach, outcomes, and acceptability of the intervention. We used logbook data maintained by CAs to capture demographic characteristics and ASC outcomes of people supported. We also conducted in-depth interviews with 25 women who had received support and 22 CAs who had provided support. 530 people accessed A

Sociodemographic Differences in COVID-19 Self-Reported Symptoms by Ethnicity and Older Adults in Bolivia.

The effects of COVID-19 revealed the fragility of health systems in the LAC region, with greater risk of death in older people than in younger people, as well as greater vulnerability to infection due to living with people aged 30-59 years, who have a higher prevalence of COVID-19. On the other hand, there is not much information on inequalities in the incidence of COVID-19 in indigenous people, a population with lower immunological resistance. The objectives are: 1) To determine the association between sociodemographic variables with self-reported COVID-19 symptoms. 2) To investigate whether

Self-sampling for human papillomavirus DNA detection: a preliminary study of compliance and feasibility in BOLIVIA.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates in Bolivia are among the highest in Latin America. This investigation aims to evaluate the possibility of using simple devices, e.g. a cotton swab and a glass slide, for self-sampling in order to detect human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA by PCR in cervico-vaginal cells. METHODS: In the first phase of our study we evaluated the use of a glass slide as a transport medium for cervical cells. A physician took paired-cervical samples from 235 women. One sample was transported in Easyfix® solution and the other sample was smeared over a glass sl

Maternal hemoglobin concentration and pregnancy outcome: a study of the effects of elevation in el alto, bolivia.

Iron-deficiency anemia is often under-diagnosed in developing countries, specifically in pregnant populations in regions of high altitude. Hemoglobin levels are not consistently adjusted for elevation, and therefore many anemic patients are left undiagnosed. The purpose of this study was to incorporate current parameters for diagnosing anemia in pregnancy at high altitudes, and to evaluate the effects of appropriately adjusted hemoglobin concentrations on pregnancy outcome. A few studies have examined the effect of elevation on hemoglobin status, and other studies have considered the effects o

High prevalence of qnr genes in commensal enterobacteria from healthy children in Peru and Bolivia.

A remarkable prevalence of qnrB (54%) and, at a lower level, of qnrS (14%) was discovered in pools of commensal enterobacteria from 310 healthy children living in Peru and Bolivia, using a metagenomic approach. Analysis of randomly selected enterobacterial pools revealed that qnrB was mainly carried by Escherichia coli and qnrS by Klebsiella pneumoniae. Investigation of 11 qnrB-positive isolates and 9 qnrS-positive isolates revealed the presence of plasmid-borne qnrB19 (n = 8), qnrB2 (n = 2), qnrB10 (n = 1), and qnrS1 (n = 9) genes.

Serosurvey of pathogens in domestic dogs on the border of Noël Kempff Mercado National Park, Bolivia.

The threat of disease transmission from domestic animals to wildlife has become recognized as an increasing concern within the wildlife community in recent years. Domestic dogs pose a significant risk as reservoirs for infectious diseases, especially for wild canids. As part of a multifaceted ecologic study of maned wolves and other canids in the large, remote Noël Kempff Mercado National Park (NKMNP) in northeastern Bolivia, 40 domestic dogs in two villages and at two smaller settlements bordering the national park were sampled for exposure to canine diseases. High levels of exposure were fou

First nationwide survey on Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Bolivia: susceptibility profiles, resistome, and genomic epidemiology.

Information on the molecular epidemiology of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms is still limited in some South American countries. This study aims to decipher the population structure of 111 extensive drug-resistant P. aeruginosa isolates from a national study conducted in Bolivia during 2023-2024. The antibiotic susceptibility profiles were determined for 15 antipseudomonal agents. All isolates were subjected to whole-genome sequencing (WGS), and, through bioinformatics analysis, sequence types (ST), clonal relatedness, and acquired mutation-driven and transferable

Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto, Echinococcus ortleppi; and E. intermedius (G7) are present in Bolivia.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic disease caused by a complex of species known as Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. CE is endemic in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay and the South part of Brazil. In contrast, little is known regarding the presence of CE in Bolivia. In this study, 35 cysts isolated from livestock (mostly from the Department of La Paz) and 3 from humans (La Paz, Oruro and Potosi) were genetically characterized analysing the sequence of the cox1 gene (1609 bp). In total, 30 cysts (from La Paz, Cochabamba and Beni) were characterized as E. granulosus sensu stricto (3 ferti

Rickettsia infection in dogs and Rickettsia parkeri in Amblyomma tigrinum ticks, Cochabamba Department, Bolivia.

Only few published data are available on ticks and tick-borne zoonotic pathogens in Bolivia. To evaluate rickettsial seroprevalence and infection in dogs and ticks, during February-April 2007, we collected whole blood, sera, and ticks from dogs living in the rural, peri-urban, and urban areas of Cochabamba, Bolivia. Dog sera were subjected to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test to detect IgG antibodies against Rickettsia rickettsii and 68.2% of samples were found to be positive (n = 30; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 52.4-81.4). Blood samples and ticks were tested using polymerase chain reac

Geographical variation in urinary mercury concentrations among populations living in highland and lowland Bolivia.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations were determined in spot urine samples of populations living in the highland and lowland areas of Bolivia. The mean levels of the Hg (U-Hg) were 0.43 and 0.34 micrograms Hg/g creatinine in lowlanders and in highlanders, respectively, which did not suggest existence of high-level exposure to Hg in these populations. In both highlanders and lowlanders, there was a marked difference in levels of U-Hg among different populations. Several lines of evidence suggested that local dietary patterns resulted in the observed difference in U-Hg among different populations. Severa

Rapid drinking water safety estimation in cities: Piloting a globally scalable method in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: Systematically collected and comparable data on drinking water safety at city-scale is currently unavailable, despite the stated importance of water safety monitoring at scale under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We developed a rapid drinking water quality assessment methodology intended to be replicable across all cities and useful for monitoring towards achieving SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). METHODS: We collected drinking water samples at the point-of-consumption for basic microbial, physical and chemical water quality analysis and conducted hous

Prevalence and risk factors of Strongyloides stercoralis in haemodialysis in Cochabamba, Bolivia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloidiasis is an infectious disease that can be fatal in immunocompromised patients. Patients with end-stage renal failure who are on dialysis have a considerably weakened immune system, and organ transplantation is a major risk factor for severe strongyloidiasis. Knowledge of the local epidemiology in tropical and subtropical areas is an essential prerequisite for designing an appropriate strategy to prevent this potentially lethal complication. In this study, we aimed to estimate the prevalence and associated risk factors of S. stercoralis infection in patients on dialysis
