Traumatic brain injury (TBI) arising from blast exposure during war is common, and frequently complicated by psychiatric morbidity. There is controversy as to whether mild TBI from blast is different from other causes of mild TBI. Anxiety and affective disorders such as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression are common accompaniments of blast injury with a significant overlap in the diagnostic features of PTSD with post-concussive syndrome (PCS). This review focuses on this overlap and the effects of mild TBI due to bomb blast. Mild TBI may have been over diagnosed by late retros

BACKGROUND: The present paper describes the cognitive-behavioural approach evolved and adapted to treat survivors of the London bombings experiencing fear and avoidance of public transport (travel phobia).
METHOD: Treatment outcomes for a consecutive case series (N = 11) are reported.
RESULTS: All individuals who completed treatment (N = 10) had returned to their pre-bombing use of transport and reported minimal symptoms.
CONCLUSIONS: The need for appropriately tailored treatment based on differential diagnosis and formulation and the importance of incorporating skills for treatment of post

Bomb blast injuries are no longer confined to battlefields. With the ever present threat of terrorism, we should always be prepared for bomb blasts. Bomb blast injuries tend to affect air-containing organs more, as the blast wave tends to exert a shearing force on air-tissue interfaces. Commonly-injured organs include the tympanic membranes, the sinuses, the lungs and the bowel. Of these, blast lung injury is the most challenging to treat. The clinical picture is a mix of acute respiratory distress syndrome and air embolism, and the institution of positive pressure ventilation in the presence

BACKGROUND: At 07:39 am on March 11th, 2004, ten terrorist bomb explosions occurred almost simultaneously in four commuter trains in Madrid, Spain, killing instantly 177 people and injuring >2,000. There were 14 subsequent in-hospital deaths, bringing the definite death toll to 191 victims. This article describes the organization of the clinical management and patterns of injuries in casualties who were taken to the closest hospital, with emphasis on the critical patient population.
RESULTS: There were 312 patients taken to that center, and 91 were hospitalized, 89 of them (28.5%) for >24 hrs

We conducted a longitudinal analysis of height after age 20 for atomic bomb survivors in the Adult Health Study (AHS) cohort. The measurements we used were made from July 1958 to June 1998 (AHS examination cycles 1-20). We analyzed only the subjects with known atomic bomb radiation doses, excluding those who were not in the city at the time of bombing (ATB) and those exposed in utero. We also excluded from the analysis measurements made after the occurrence of vertebral fracture. The total number of subjects was 11,862, and the total number of measurements was 109,770; the mean number of measu

A thermonuclear bomb explosion over any city in the world would have a devastating effect on the population and environment. For those who survive, with or without injuries, life would become primitive with little or no uncontaminated food or water, and with inadequate housing, fuel, and medical care, resulting in a breakdown of family and interpersonal relationships. This theoretic study of the potential outcome of a thermonuclear bomb-burst over Nashville, Tennessee, discusses epidemiologically the wide range of medical and psychologic effects from the direct trauma of blast and fire, widesp

Thyroid function was evaluated in the Marshallese who were accidentally exposed to fallout-containing radioiodine isotopes in 1954. Measurements of thyrotrophin (TSH, thyroid-stimulating hormone) levels and free thyroxine (T4) index (FT4I) have revealed that, among 86 persons exposed on Rongelap and Ailingnae atolls, 14 have shown evidence of thyroid hypofunction. This was first noted in some individuals about ten years after exposure. Only two of these showed clinical evidence of hypothyroidism. The most marked TSH elevations were noted in nine persons exposed when younger than 6 years, with

Primary cardiac tumors are rare. Atrial myxomas are one of the most frequent benign tumors of the heart. These tumors typically manifest as obstructive symptoms, including dyspnea and syncope. Constitutional symptoms, including fever, weight loss, and fatigue, are also common. Embolic phenomena are rare. Neurological manifestations primarily occur as ischemic infarction, whereas hemorrhagic transformation is infrequent. We present a young adult who experienced an ischemic stroke followed by hemorrhagic transformation, ultimately diagnosed with an atrial myxoma. During the patient's hospitaliza

Cigarette butts (CBs) are rapidly emerging as a burgeoning threat to marine ecosystems, posing substantial risks to aquatic life. This study systematically investigated the effects of CBs fibers and leachate on the behavior, metabolism, and mitophagy of the marine rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. The results indicated that exposure to CBs significantly inhibited the motility and feeding behavior of rotifers. Further studies found that CB exposure caused metabolic stress on rotifers and significantly interfered with their energy metabolism, which was specifically manifested as a biphasic dose-eff

IntroductionBombings, accounting for approximately 50% of global terrorist incidents, frequently cause high-morbidity thoracic trauma, including blast lung injury. This retrospective radiological review characterizes injury patterns in bomb blast victims to guide mass casualty response and improve patient outcomes.MethodsThis retrospective observational review, conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital (January 2004-October 2024), included 130 patients with bomb blast injuries. Demographics, injury mechanisms, and imaging findings were categorized by blast type and summarized using frequencies

The tusk of the male narwhal is a prolonged canine tooth, reaching a size of up to 3 m in length. The tusk erupts through the young narwhal's upper left lip and, over time, develops into an elongated structure composed of dentine growth layers with an outer coating of cementum. In this study, we utilized bomb radiocarbon (14C) to estimate the ages of three narwhal tusks, which allowed us to validate the assumption that one growth layer is deposited annually in narwhal tusks. We used radiocarbon values from samples collected from the annual growth layers along the lengths of the erupted tusks a

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a halogenated hydrocarbon that is a colorless, clear liquid with a sweetish, ether-like, nonirritant odor. It was previously used in dry cleaning agents, refrigerants, and fire extinguishers. CCl4 toxicity is rarely observed. Two patients with acute hepatitis following exposure to a CCl4-containing antique fire extinguisher are presented. A son (patient 1) and father (patient 2) were admitted to the hospital with acute, unexplained elevated transaminases. After extensive questioning, they reported recent exposure to a large amount of CCl4 when an antique firebomb

BACKGROUND: To describe the severity and types of blast-related extremity injuries and the presence of accompanying vascular injuries (VI) and amputation, and to identify the associated factors affecting the treatment management and clinical course.
METHODS: The study included 101 patients with extremity injuries caused by a bomb explosion. The radiographs and computed tomography angiographies of the patients were evaluated in terms of injury patterns, presence of penetrating fragments and fractures, and localization (upper or lower extremity) and type (open or closed) of injury. Paul Ehrlich coined the term "magic bullet" to describe how a drug kills the parasite inside its human host without harming the host itself. Ehrlich concluded that the drug must have a greater affinity to the parasite than to human cells. Today, the specificity of drug action is understood in terms of the drug target. An ideal target is a protein that is essential for the proliferation of the pathogen but absent in human cells. Examples are the enzymes of folate synthesis or of the nonmevalonate pathway in the malaria parasites. However, there are other ways how a drug can kill selectively. Of

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to explore how type and timing of prior negative life experiences (NLEs) may be linked to responses to subsequent collective trauma, such as a terrorist attack.
METHOD: Using a longitudinal design, we examined relationships between prior NLEs and responses to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings (BMB). Shortly after the BMB, a representative sample, compiled from metropolitan Boston (n = 846), New York (n = 941), and the rest of the United States (n = 2,888), reported BMB exposure and acute stress symptomatology. Six months later, we assessed prior NLEs,

Self injury while making material which has a tendency to blast is dangerous- whether it is fire cracker or local bomb. Some villagers living nearby forest make bomb to scare wild animals to protect their pet animals. A 22-year old girl while making this kind of local bomb, got injured badly. The injury was sustained while making bomb in a sitting position with face down as it is evident form type of injury. There was lacerated injury of both hands leading to amputation of both hands above wrists. Lacerated injury was present on medial sides of both thighs and gun powder marks on face.

BACKGROUND: Although there is speculation that individuals living in the vicinity of nuclear disasters have persistent mental health deterioration due to psychological stress, few attempts have been made to examine this issue.
AIMS: To determine whether having been in the vicinity of the Nagasaki atomic bomb explosion in the absence of substantial exposure to radiation affected the mental health of local inhabitants more than half a century later.
METHOD: Participants were randomly recruited from individuals who lived in the vicinity of the atomic bomb explosion in uncontaminated suburbs of

BACKGROUND: Children have unique anatomy and physiology that may necessitate a unique approach to a pediatric surge. An analysis of the Bath school bombings of 1927, the largest pediatric terrorist disaster in U.S. history, provides an opportunity to gain perspective on pediatric patterns of injury and future disaster preparedness.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-nine contemporary newspaper accounts, the official coroner's inquest, interviews, online resources, and the Michigan state archives of the disaster were reviewed with respect to the demographics, pattern of injury, gender, age, duratio
