Bone bank has become an essential requirement for centers that perform tumor and reconstructive surgeries. It provides allogenic bone procured from cadavers as well as live donors in the form of surgical residues. Thus, we conducted a retrospective observational study on recipients who underwent various reconstructive procedures using fresh frozen allograft obtsined from the live donors through surgical residues in a newly established bone bank. The outcomes of cases operated where allogenic bone grafts were used between January 2018 and November 2020 were analyzed in terms of infection and ti

BACKGROUND: During the last decade, more than 2000 bone allografts harvested from 888 donors and processed by the Queensland Bone Bank have been transplanted in over 1500 patients in Australia and New Zealand. A strict protocol to eliminate HIV transmission by fresh frozen allografts is followed; and not a single case of HIV transmission has been reported.
METHODS: All donors were screened and strict donor exclusion criteria were used. All donor blood samples were subjected to double testing including antibody to HIV-1, HIV-2 and HTLV-1 and p24 antigen. The allografts negative for these tests

The authors present a case of bilateral loosening of total knee arthroplasty as a result of polyethylene (PE) wear. Five and seven years after TKA the patient developed a polyethylene granuloma leading to extensive bone defects under the implant. Finally it resulted in pathological fracture of medial condyle of tibia. A revision PFC stabilized prosthesis was used for reimplantation. Bone defects were filled in by bone grafts from the bone bank. Authors point out the issues of PE wear. In the discussion they list various factors (time, indication, material, design and the factor of individual r

Cord blood (CB) contains a sufficient number of haemopoietic progenitor cells and can be used as an alternative to bone marrow transplantation. To date, a number of transplants using cord blood-derived stem cells from HLA-identical siblings and unrelated donors have been successfully performed. However, only approximately 30% of patients have an HLA-identical sibling while the rest are reliant on finding an HLA-compatible unrelated donor. This is particularly difficult for patients from ethnic minorities since the majority of unrelated bone marrow donor volunteers are from Caucasoid ancestry.

Recently, it has been suggested that otosclerosis represents the host's ongoing immunologic response to measles or other viral antigens. Documentation of past inflammation within the inner ear would serve as further evidence that this mechanism may be at play in the pathogenesis of the disease. Among the characteristic signs of prior inflammation in the inner ear is the presence of lamellar bone at the site of inflammation. This has been described in the temporal bone of a patient with immune-mediated deafness and with the temporal bones of experimental models of immune-mediated inner ear dise

The technique of posterior lumbar interbody fusion reported here consists of the following steps: The confluence of the spinous process and lamina removed en bloc during the exposure is contoured into three keystone plugs; the anterior third of the disc space is packed with bone fragments; the keystone plugs are tapped in posterior to the bone fragments and locked into place; and excess bone fragments are laid over the facets bilaterally and over the transverse processes if necessary to fuse the facet joints and create a posterior fusion. This fusion technique precludes the need for banked bon

INTRODUCTION: Successful spinal fusion depends on achieving reliable arthrodesis, and bone graft selection is a critical determinant of outcomes. Although autologous iliac crest bone graft remains the biological gold standard, limitations such as donor-site morbidity and insufficient volume have prompted the use of alternatives, including allograft, demineralized bone matrix (DBM), hydroxyapatite, and β-tricalcium phosphate. The introduction of biologics-such as recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and cell- or peptide-based constructs-has further expanded grafting options

As children grow, they accumulate bone mineral, which serves as a "bone bank" for the future. Any condition that interferes with normal bone mineral accrual during childhood has the potential to reduce peak bone mass and subsequently increase future risk for fracture. In contrast to adults, for whom dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has become the standard clinical instrument for assessing bone mineral density and criteria have been developed to define osteopenia and osteoporosis, information for children is still limited. Numerous issues confound the interpretation of DXA-derived bone mi

South Africa (SA) faces a large unmet need for bone marrow (BM) transplantation, which could be alleviated in part by establishing a public umbilical cord blood stem cell bank (UCB SCB). Umbilical cord blood is an increasingly utilised source of hematopoietic stem cells for BM transplantation in addition to BM or mobilized peripheral blood stem cells. Establishing a public UCB SCB would therefore be a positive step towards improving the quality of health care in SA by providing for an important unmet need. This study takes the form of an enquiry into the acceptability of establishing a public

Reconstruction of large skeletal defects is a significant and challenging issue. Tissue banks often use γ-irradiation (15-35 kGy) to sterilize bone allografts, which, however, drastically impairs the post-yield mechanical properties. In previous studies, we reported the development of a method that protects human bone collagen connectivity through ribose crosslinking while still undergoing γ-irradiation. Given these promising results, the next step was to determine if the presence of ribose within the bone tissue would interfere with the effectiveness of the γ-irradiation sterilization against

It is more than 20 years since the first cord blood transplant (CBT) was performed, following the realisation that cord blood (CB), which is normally wasted, is rich in progenitor cells and capable of rescuing haematopoiesis. Since then it has been appreciated that CB is rich in stem cells, and has many other features not the least of which is its ability to rescue the transplanted patient without a rigid need for full human lymphocyte antigen (HLA) compatibility. Also it is easily accessible, relatively free from infections and poses no medical risk to the donor. However, the quantity of the

Three novel alleles, human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-B*0725, B*0728, and B*3808, were discovered during routine genotyping of samples for the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry and Australian Cord Blood Bank. The new alleles contain amino acid changes in the antigen-binding site of the expressed HLA protein, which may alter the antigen-binding properties of the functional protein.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B infection can be transmitted by organ or tissue transplantation.
CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old man received a bone graft from a donor who tested negative for HbsAg with a static-mode assay. The same donor, on a subsequent donation, was found to be HbsAg-positive with a dynamic mode assay. The archival sample from the initial donation also tested HbsAg-positive with the dynamic-mode assay. The recipient of the bone, who had received HBV vaccine in the past, did not develop clinical or laboratory evidence of HBV infection.
CONCLUSIONS: This case highlights the importance o

Lateral acetabular osteotomy in comparison to three-dimensional osteotomies of the pelvis in hip dysplasia is a simple technical procedure. Contraindications are an age over 8 years and an irreducible femoral head. For a long time we have used xenogenic deproteinized bone wedges from animals. We now use autoclaved and deep-frozen wedges from allogenic femoral heads. The wedges are sterilized at 121 degrees C for 20 min and then kept deep-frozen in the bone bank. Our results in 109 patients show that this method is very successful; even extreme angles of acetabular index correction are possible

We report our experience with the use of fresh glenoid osteochondral allograft in the treatment of a chronic posttraumatic posterior subluxation of the shoulder associated with glenoid bone loss in a 54-year-old recreational football player. Based on the pathoanatomy of the lesion and availability of a bone bank providing fresh allograft, we opted for an open anatomic reconstruction using a fresh glenoid allograft. A posterior approach was used; the prepared allograft was placed in the appropriate anatomic position and fixed with 2 small fragment screws with washers. At 2-year follow-up, the c

Pre-clinical assessments of bone substitute materials are frequent in the literature, but research papers about the clinical situation of bone graft use and consumer market acceptance are rare. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dental use of bone grafts according to the perception of dentists in the city of Sobral, Brazil. We interviewed 183 professionals and analyzed their professional data, knowledge of the subject, specific use, and opinions on cost-effectiveness and biosafety. Most of the respondents had 10 years' or less experience in the profession, and lacked specialization thou

AIM: Fresh frozen bone (FFB) is homologous bone obtained from human donors, provided by Tissue Banks. It is a graft material in reconstructive surgery; it is currently and widely used in orthopedic surgery and lately it has been introduced in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The purpose of this work was to show the use of fresh frozen homologous bone for bony augmentation of the maxilla and mandible in preparation for dental reconstruction with endosseous implants, as an effective alternative to harvesting and grafting autogenous bone from intra- or extra-oral donor sites.
