Two patients with aneurysmal bone cysts of the pelvis were imaged using a 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging device. Findings included multiple internal septations, cysts with fluid-fluid levels of varying intensity, and an intact rim of low-intensity signal completely surrounding the lesion. These findings allow a specific diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst to be made.

The internal pressure of simple bone cysts was found to be slightly higher than the normal pressure of the bone marrow in the contralateral limb. The pressure within the cyst was measured during drilling with a Kirschner wire; it gradually decreased as the number of drill-holes increased. The PO2 of the cyst fluid was markedly lower than that of either venous or arterial blood measured synchronously. It is suggested that venous obstruction in the bone is the likely cause of these cysts. Seven patients with simple bone cysts were treated by the multiple drill-hole method, and the clinical outco

The solitary bone cysts occurs most frequently in the upper humerus and femur in 75% of the cases, and it is very seldom located in the ulna, in 0.5--1.5%. This report deals with the treatment results of two children, five and six years old, suffering from solitary bone cysts of the lower end of the ulna. In one case a subtotal resection of the cyst was carried out and the defect was bridged with an autologous iliac bone graft. In the other case the patient was treated by curettage, and the defect was filled in with an autologous bone graft and cancellous bone out of the tibia. In both cases c

The clinical relevance and nature of calcaneal cysts is controversial. The risk of pathologic fracture is undefined and diagnostic criteria to differentiate between cysts in patients who can be treated nonoperatively and patients who require surgical intervention are not available. To address these questions, 50 calcaneal bone cysts in 47 patients were evaluated. The majority of cysts (40 of 50) were asymptomatic and were treated nonoperatively. Cysts reaching a critical size, defined as 100% intracalcaneal cross section in the coronary plane and at least 30% in the sagittal plane, are at risk

An unusual case of aneurysmal bone cyst recurring after operation as a simple bone cyst is reported. Different theories on etiology and pathogenesis of aneurysmal bone cyst, simple bone cyst, and central giant cell granuloma of the jaws are resumed and similarities demonstrated. It is suggested that these three lesions have a common dysvascular etiology and that local environmental factors within the bone may differentiate the pathogenesis.

Simple bone cysts (SBC) are pseudocysts occurring less commonly in the maxillofacial region. The uncertain and unclear etiopathogenesis led to numerous synonyms to refer this particular cyst. These cysts are devoid of an epithelial lining and are usually empty or contain blood or straw-colored fluid. In jaws initially it mimics a periapical cyst and later can lead to cortical bone expansion warranting for radical approach, which is seldom required. SBC is predominantly diagnosed in first two decades of life. Here we report a case of solitary bone cyst mimicking a periapical cyst of a mandibula

BACKGROUND: Simple bone cysts are benign bony lesions. Treatment strategies are varied for this particular pathology. It remains controversial as to what the ideal treatment strategy is. Recently, bony substitute injections have emerged as a potential option for treatment. This paper aimed to describe our institution's experience in using bony substitute injections to treat unicameral bone cysts.
METHODS: A retrospective review of consecutive patients over an 84-month period at a tertiary paediatric hospital was performed. Information regarding patients' presentation, diagnosis, and managemen

The best treatment of unicameral bone cyst and aneurismatic bone cyst (ABC) is debated in the literature. For simple bone cysts, multiple treatments were proposed from observation only to open curettage. The historical treatment with intraosseous injection of methylprednisolone acetate into the bone cysts nowadays is reduced due to the morbidity of multiple injections and the risk of multiple pathologic fractures until the healing. Different types of treatments for ABC are reported, including surgery, percutaneous treatments, and medical treatments; however, there is currently no consensus on

AIMS: The study was done to review the literature about the intriguing aspects of the aneurysmal bone cyst and to describe our experience with these cases.
DESIGN: Retrospective.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We reviewed the records of all patients with primary spinal tumours whom we managed over last 8 years. We selected the patients with biopsy proven aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) for our study.
RESULTS: Four patients (two males and two females) were included. The age ranged from 15-18 years. Three of them had neurological deficits and one had only pain. All of them were operated and three required i

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign tumour whose progression involves the RANK/RANKL signalling pathway. Surgery is the reference standard treatment but carries risks that vary with the site of the tumour. Denosumab is a human monoclonal IgG2 antibody that targets the RANK/RANKL pathway and may therefore hold promise for inhibiting ABC progression. The objective of this study was to evaluate denosumab use in paediatric patients (younger than 18 years) with ABC and to describe the clinical and radiological outcomes, as well as the side effect profile.
HYPOTHESIS: Denosumab is a

PURPOSE: This retrospective study evaluated the efficacy of minimally invasive surgery to control cyst progression for active unicameral bone cysts (AUBC) by intracystic methylprednisolone injection, percutaneous curettage, and autogenous bone marrow grafting.
METHODS: From May 2010 to May 2017, patients diagnosed with AUBC who underwent percutaneous double-needle intracystic methylprednisolone injection, percutaneous curettage, and autogenous bone marrow grafting were retrospectively reviewed. Recurrence was defined by modified Neer scale score. Patients were followed up regularly, and previ

BACKGROUND: Although aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign tumours, they have the potential to be locally aggressive. Various treatment approaches, such as en bloc resection, open curettage, radiotherapy, sclerotherapy, and embolization have been proposed, but the most appropriate treatment should be selected after considering the risk of tumour recurrence and treatment complications. Endoscopic curettage (ESC) may be a less invasive alternative to open curettage for ABC treatment. We aimed to describe the use of ESC for the treatment of ABCs and to report our clinical outcomes, including th

BACKGROUND: A recurrence rate of 19% to 23% has been reported in juxtaphyseal aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) without en bloc resection or amputation. No percutaneous surgical techniques or drug treatments have demonstrated consistent bone healing with normal physeal growth and a recurrence rate of <19%. Doxycycline has properties that may make it an appropriate agent for percutaneous treatment of juxtaphyseal ABC in skeletally immature patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 16 patients who underwent percutaneous treatment of ABCs with doxycycline from 2006 to 2011. The mean age was 7.1 y

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are rapidly growing benign osseous lesions composed of blood-filled channels separated by fibrous septa. Since the value of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for ABC has not been well defined, the German Cooperative Group on Radiotherapy for Benign Diseases performed the national register study described herein.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five German institutions collected data regarding clinical features, treatment concepts, and outcome for patients with ABC who had been referred for local EBRT over the past 30 years.
RESULTS: Between 1990 and 2015, 10 pat

Unicameral bone cysts are benign bone lesions that are often asymptomatic and commonly develop in the proximal humerus and femur of skeletally immature patients. The etiology of these lesions remains unknown. Most patients present with a pathologic fracture, but these cysts can be discovered incidentally, as well. Radiographically, a unicameral bone cyst appears as a radiolucent lesion with cortical thinning and is centrally located within the metaphysis. Although diagnosis is frequently straightforward, management remains controversial. Because the results of various management methods are he

BACKGROUND: Despite the great amount of research concerning bone cysts, there is still no commonly accepted method of treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness managing bone cyst with hybrid external fixator by distraction osteogenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1982 and 2009, 25 patients with unicameral (20 patients) and aneurismal (five patients) bone cysts were treated using this method. Eighteen patients had a history of pathological fracture at the same location. Cysts were located in the humerus, femur, tibia, and radius. Median follow-up was 48 (range 31-9

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to retrospectively examine the efficacy of intralesional injection of 32P chromic phosphate, a beta-emitting colloidal radiopharmaceutical, in the treatment of aneurysmal bone cysts of the axial skeleton. Five patients with large aneurysmal bone cysts were managed with injection of 32P chromic phosphate into their tumors under CT guidance. With only a single minor complication, all lesions were observed to ossify on follow-up CT, with an average follow up of 2 years.
CONCLUSION: CT-guided injection of axial aneurysmal bone cysts with 32P chromic phospha
