Bone density and bone area in Canadian Aboriginal women: the First Nations Bone Health Study.

INTRODUCTION: Canadian Aboriginal women are at increased risk of fracture compared with the general population. HYPOTHESIS: There is disproportionately reduced bone density in Aboriginal women as compared to white females of similar age. METHODS: A random age-stratified (25-39, 40-59 and 60-75) sample of Aboriginal women (n=258) and white women (n=181) was recruited. All subjects had calcaneus and distal forearm bone density measurements, and urban participants (n=397 [90.4%]) also had measurements of the lumbar spine, hip and total body. RESULTS: Unadjusted measurements were similar in the

Enhanced bone quality assessment through trabecular bone score and bone mineral density in lumbar spine.

PURPOSE: Bone mineral density (BMD) alone is insufficient to fully capture fracture risk. This study investigated the association between lumbar spine BMD (LS-BMD) and trabecular bone score (TBS) and constructed age- and sex-specific centile reference curves for both measures in a Taiwanese population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1,196 participants. LS-BMD was measured at L1-L4 by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and TBS was derived from the same images using TBS iNsight software (Med-Imaps). Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression were performed to examine

The influence of thyroid disorders on bone density and biochemical markers of bone metabolism.

Background Thyroid dysfunction, predominantly hyperthyroidism, has been previously linked to impaired bone mass density (BMD) and increased risk of fractures. On the other hand, data in the field of hypothyroidism (HT) are missing. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the impact of thyroid disorders on bone density serum and urine calcium (Ca) and phosphate (P) as well as serum osteocalcin and alkaline phosphatase and urine hydroxyproline in a series of post-menopausal women. Materials and methods The study was conducted in the Reproductive Endocrinology Outpatient Clinic of our

Effects of denosumab on bone mineral density and bone turnover in postmenopausal women.

Osteoporosis is a degenerative bone disease affecting approximately 10 million American adults. Several options are available to prevent development of the disease or slow and even stop its progression. Nonpharmacologic measures include adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, exercise, fall prevention, and avoidance of tobacco and excessive alcohol intake. Current drug therapy includes bisphosphonates, calcitonin, estrogen or hormone therapy, selective estrogen receptor modulators, and teriparatide. Denosumab, a receptor activator of nuclear factor-K B ligand (RANKL) inhibitor, was recently

Bone mineral density assessment in patients with cystinuria.

BACKGROUND: Cystinuria is a rare genetic disease characterized by impaired tubular transport of cystine. Clinical features of cystinuria mainly include nephrolithiasis and its complications, although cystinuric patients may present with other comorbidities. There are currently no data on bone features of patients with cystinuria. Our aim is to characterize bone mineral density (BMD) in cystinuria. METHODS: Our study included adult cystinuric patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 followed at 3 specialized outpatient clinics in Italy (Rome, Naples and Ver

EFFECT OF ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES ON BONE MINERAL DENSITY.

Contraceptives are widely used in our times and a lot of research has been conducted to clarify their impact on Bone Mineral Density. Combined Oral Contraceptives (COCs) may be detrimental to the BMD of adolescents. However, low-dose are more protective than ultra-low-dose COCs. When it comes to premenopause and perimenopause, COCs have no impact on BMD in women with good ovarian function and no estrogen deficiency. In women with impaired ovarian function, it seems that COCs have a positive influence on BMD. Progestin only-pills may not affect BMD, but further research is needed. Depot medroxy

Unraveling the mystery of Gaucher bone density pathophysiology.

Gaucher disease (GD) is caused by pathogenic mutations in GBA1, the gene that encodes the lysosomal enzyme β-glucocerebrosidase. Despite the existence of a variety of specific treatments for GD, they cannot completely reverse bone complications. Many studies have evidenced the impairment in bone tissue of GD, and molecular mechanisms of bone density alterations in GD are being studied during the last years and different reports emphasized its efforts trying to unravel why and how bone tissue is affected. The cause of skeletal density affection in GD is a matter of debates between research grou

Low bone mineral density in achondroplasia and hypochondroplasia.

BACKGROUND: Achondroplasia (ACH) and hypochondroplasia (HCH) are the most common form of short-limb skeletal dysplasias caused by activated fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) signaling. Although decreased bone mass was reported in gain-of-function mutation in Fgfr3 mice, both disorders have never been described as osteoporotic. In the present study, we evaluated bone mineral density (BMD) in ACH and HCH patients. METHODS: We measured spinal BMD (L1-L4) in 18 ACH and four HCH patients with an average age of 19.8 ± 7.5 years (range, 10-33 years). BMD Z-score in each individual was calc

Does bone mineral density affect hip fracture severity?

The association between hip fracture and reduced bone mineral density is well documented, with reduced bone mineral density predisposing to fracture. However, it is unknown whether an association exists between the magnitude of bone density lost and the severity of the hip fracture sustained. One hundred forty-two patients (96 women, 46 men) with a mean age of 74 years (range, 49-92 years) who sustained a hip fracture following a simple ground-level fall and were treated for this injury were reviewed. All patients had undergone dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry bone scanning of the contralatera

Low bone density is not a one-size-fits-all disorder. We need to carefully consider the diagnostic and therapeutic options before assuming that low bone density is osteoporosis.

Peripheral bone density in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Bone loss in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) varies at different skeletal sites. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether bone mineral density (BMD) of the forearm is significantly different in patients with RA and controls and may correlate to BMD or other parameters of inflammation or bone resorption. We included 421 patients (357 women: mean age 58.4 +/- 12.87 years and 64 men: mean age 56.11 +/- 12.80 years) with RA in the study. BMD values of the ultradistal forearm (0.381 +/- 0.052 g/cm(2)) and middistal forearm (0.519 +/- 0.091 g/cm(2)) were significantly (p < 0.01) lower in

Low bone mineral density in spinal muscular atrophy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pathological fractures are common in pediatric neuromuscular disorders. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry has become the most accepted technique for the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) in adults and children. Limited data are available on BMD in pediatric neuromuscular diseases except Duchenne muscular dystrophy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the results of all dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scans done in a period of 23 months at a tertiary care pediatric neuromuscular center. BMD was performed on spine region L1-4. Osteopenia was classified as mild i

Prediction of bone mineral density with dental radiographs.

There is consensus to use the bone mineral density (BMD) for the operational definition of the degree of osteoporosis and the risk of osteoporotic fractures. Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the common technique to determine BMD. Because of high costs and limited availability of DXA equipment it is worthwhile to look for alternative diagnostic techniques. As part of a larger study, the Osteodent project, we investigated if the trabecular pattern on dental radiographs can be used to predict BMD and to identify the subjects with osteoporosis and increased risk of osteoporotic fractures. In fou
