Developments in the treatment of pediatric long bone shaft fractures.

Shaft fractures of the long bones are among the most common pediatric injuries. They are characterized by a limited potential for spontaneous correction because of the fractures--distance to the physis. Although conservative treatment has been practiced for many years with satisfying results, several aspects have led to an increase in the numbers of surgical procedures including changes of living, sports habits, economics, and patients-request to treatment. We reviewed the literature to describe developments of treatment concepts of pediatric shaft fractures. In shaft fractures of the upper ex

[Development of degenerative changes in the wrist with pseudarthrosis of the scaphoid bone].

In patients with symptomatic scaphoid nonunion there was an increased evidence of progessive osteoarthrosis expressed as instability of the wrist; it is defined as a scapholunate angle more than 70 degrees or a radiolunate angle of more than 10 degrees. We tried to determine the factors of risk and prognostic indicators of degenerative arthritis. In this study 40 patients with painfull nonunion of the scaphoid were analysed. Duration of nonunion was not in correlation with development of osteoarthritic changes (p=0,644; p>0,05). Progessive degenerative changes correlated well with radiolunate

Integration of FGF and TWIST in calvarial bone and suture development.

Mutations in the FGFR1-FGFR3 and TWIST genes are known to cause craniosynostosis, the former by constitutive activation and the latter by haploinsufficiency. Although clinically achieving the same end result, the premature fusion of the calvarial bones, it is not known whether these genes lie in the same or independent pathways during calvarial bone development and later in suture closure. We have previously shown that Fgfr2c is expressed at the osteogenic fronts of the developing calvarial bones and that, when FGF is applied via beads to the osteogenic fronts, suture closure is accelerated (K

Development and reversibility of aluminum-induced bone lesion in the rat.

We studied the effect of aluminum injections on bones of rats after intervals of 3, 6, and 9 weeks. To study reversibility, we allowed one group to recover for 3 weeks. Both weanling and adult rats were examined to determine the influence of age. The calcium, phosphate, creatinine, and parathyroid hormone levels were similar in aluminum-treated rats and controls. Aluminum could be seen by histochemical stain after 6 weeks, but at that time the bone was otherwise normal. By 9 weeks the bone formation (as measured by tetracycline labeling) in aluminum-treated rats was severely decreased on trabe

Skeletal development of mice lacking bone sialoprotein (BSP)--impairment of long bone growth and progressive establishment of high trabecular bone mass.

Adult Ibsp-knockout mice (BSP-/-) display shorter stature, lower bone turnover and higher trabecular bone mass than wild type, the latter resulting from impaired bone resorption. Unexpectedly, BSP knockout also affects reproductive behavior, as female mice do not construct a proper "nest" for their offsprings. Multiple crossing experiments nonetheless indicated that the shorter stature and lower weight of BSP-/- mice, since birth and throughout life, as well as their shorter femur and tibia bones are independent of the genotype of the mothers, and thus reflect genetic inheritance. In BSP-/- ne

Postnatal development of bones and related hormonal factors in piglets.

Piglets grow considerably in their first weeks of life. However, little information exists about the interplay of hormonal factors that orchestrate bone development. The present study aimed to investigate the development of hormonal factors in serum, bone metrics, histology and mRNA expression of genes related to growth and transformation of bone tissue from day of life (DoL) 3 to 35. Litters (n = 10) remained with their mother sows until weaning on DoL 28. Blood and metacarpal bones of 10 piglets (5 males and 5 females) were collected on DoL 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 31 and 35. [Latest Findings on the Role of RUNX1 in Bone Development and Disorders].

Runt-related transcription factor (RUNX1) is a transcription factor closely involved in hematopoiesis. RUNX1 gene mutation plays an essential pathogenic role in the initiation and development of hematological tumors, especially in acute myeloid leukemia. Recent studies have shown that RUNX1 is also involved in the regulation of bone development and the pathological progression of bone-related diseases. RUNX1 promotes the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into chondrocytes and osteoblasts and modulates the maturation and extracellular matrix formation of chondrocytes. The expression of

Organization and Development of Bone Marrow Donation and Transplantation in Poland.

This paper describes bone marrow donation and transplantation in Poland in terms of its history, current state, and information on the quality control system. Based on data gathered from the informatics systems of the Polish Central Unrelated Potential Bone Marrow Donor and Cord Blood Registry and the Polish transplant registries, as well as World Marrow Donor Association statistics, we performed an overview study to collect and compare numbers on hematopoietic stem cells donations and transplantations in Poland in the years 2010-2014. In the last 5 years, the number of registered potential he

A comparison of long bone development in historical and contemporary ducks.

The selection for growth and carcass traits in poultry meat species has contributed to increased interest in understanding and characterizing skeletal growth as the birds struggle to balance skeletal development with increased BW and muscle mass. The objective of this study was to compare the physical characteristics and mineralization of the tibia and femur from commercial Pekin ducks representing circa 1993 and 2010 commercial strains. In 1993, the femur and tibia were collected from 8 ducks at 11 ages between 11 and 53 d. A similar study was done in 2010 in which the femur and tibia were co

Effects of amylin on bone development and egg production in hens.

Amylin is a member of the calcitonin family of hormones cosecreted with insulin from the pancreatic beta-cells that can act as an osteoblast mitogen and as an inhibitor of bone resorption in mice and humans. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of amylin on bone formation and some egg parameters in hens. The study was performed in 60 hens aged 10 wk. Thirty hens constituting the treatment group were s.c. injected with amylin at a 75 microg/kg dose every other day. The remaining hens were used as the control group. Five birds from the treatment and control groups were slaughtered a

The bone-anchored hearing aid for children: recent developments.

In 1984 the Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid, or BAHA, system was introduced. Its transducer is coupled directly to the skull percutaneously to form a highly effective bone-conduction hearing device. Clinical studies on adults with conductive hearing loss have shown that the BAHA system outperforms conventional bone-conduction hearing aids. Therefore, the next step was to apply the BAHA system in children with congenital or acquired conductive hearing loss. Reviewed data showed that, on average, such children benefited significantly more from the BAHA than from reconstructive surgery. Thus, BAHA appl

The role of Dickkopf-1 in bone development, homeostasis, and disease.

Wnt/beta-catenin signaling is central to bone development and homeostasis in adulthood and its deregulation is associated with bone pathologies. Dickkopf-1 (DKK1), a soluble inhibitor of Wnt/beta-catenin signaling required for embryonic head development, regulates Wnt signaling by binding to the Wnt coreceptor lipoprotein-related protein-5 (LRP5)/Arrow. LRP5 mutations causing high bone mass syndromes disrupt DKK1-mediated regulation of LRP5. Forced overexpression of Dkk1 in osteoblasts causes osteopenia, disruption of the hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) niche, and defects in HSC function. Dkk1 a

Role of osteoclastic dysfunction in the development of renal bone disease.

A 47-year-old-man was referred for treatment for end-stage renal failure. He had been diagnosed with type II adult onset osteopetrosis before the deterioration of his renal function. He presented with anaemia, severe hypocalcaemia, secondary hyperparathyroidism and azotaemia. An iliac bone biopsy revealed increased bone volume, disturbed osteoid calcification, active osteoclastic bone resorption and fibrous transformation in the bone marrow space. Incomplete osteoclastic dysfunction strongly suggested hypocalcaemia and secondary hyperparathyroidism, and the osteoclastic bone resorption also in

Buckling and bone modeling as factors in the development of idiopathic scoliosis.

STUDY DESIGN: Computational analysis using the finite-element method was used to examine a possible etiology of idiopathic scoliosis. OBJECTIVES: To compare changes in the coronal and the transverse planes of idiopathic thoracic scoliosis with changes produced in a finite-element buckling model, and to investigate the influence of bone modeling on the buckling spine. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although it is now widely accepted that growth is related strongly to the onset and progression of scoliosis, the pathomechanism or etiology of idiopathic scoliosis still is not clear. [Causes of development of chronic osteomyelitis of long tubular bones].

The causes of chronic hematogenic and posttraumatic forms of osteomyelitis of the long tubular bones in 383 patients are analysed. Delayed diagnosis and irrational surgical treatment was the main cause of the development of chronic hematogenic osteomyelitis in 97 patients. The occurrence of chronic osteomyelitis after operative intervention in 84 patients with closed fractures was linked with violation of asepsis and the use of unstable and of poor quality metal fixation devices for osteosynthesis. Operative treatment of closed fractures should be undertaken only in specialized traumatic depar

Some observations on the development of the long bones of ratite birds.

Observations were made on the long bones of 16 young ratite birds (10 rheas, 3 emus and 3 ostriches), from 1-day-old to 12 weeks of age. At hatching all long bones contained large cartilaginous cones which were continuous with the growth plates, and an osseous cortex. At one week of age ossification had commenced on the periphery of these embryonic cones and in some bones the cones had become separated from the growth plates. At 3 weeks of age the embryonic cones of cartilage were still present in the proximal and distal tibio-tarsi and narrow cartilaginous bridges connected the cones to the g
