Emotional dysfunction in avoidant personality disorder and borderline personality disorder: A cross-sectional comparative study.

According to the literature, avoidant personality disorder (APD) is often overlooked in research on personality disorders. In the present study, patients with APD were compared to patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) with respect to emotional dysfunction. Emotional dysfunction was operationalized through the Affect Integration Inventory. Sixty-one patients receiving treatment at specialized outpatient hospital facilities for either BPD (n = 25) or APD (n = 36) (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition) were included in a cross-sectional study. [Comorbidity in patients with narcissistic personality disorder in comparison to patients with borderline personality disorder].

BACKGROUND: Patients with a narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) do not often consult a psychotherapist or psychiatrist because of their NPD, but rather, because of co-occurring psychiatric disorders, or higher general symptom stress. Until now there is no actual data about rates of co-occurrence disorders and general symptom stress. OBJECTIVE: Which axis I and axis II disorders occur typically in NPD in comparison to patients with a borderline personality disorder (BPD)? How are general symptom stress and depressive symptoms related? METHODS: Prevalence of co-occurring disorders (Structu

Experiential avoidance in participants with borderline personality disorder and other personality disorders.

BACKGROUND: The present study has descriptive and predictive aims. The descriptive aims were to determine if participants with borderline personality disorder (BPD) reported higher levels of experiential avoidance (EA) than participants with other personality disorders (OPD) as well as determine if non-recovered participants with BPD reported higher levels of EA than participants with BPD who have recovered symptomatically and psychosocially. The predictive aim was to determine if the level of EA reported by participants with BPD was predicted by the severity of aspects of childhood or adult a

Adult attachment, personality traits, and borderline personality disorder features in young adults.

Previous studies have demonstrated that insecure attachment patterns and a trait disposition toward negative affect and impulsivity are both associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD) features. According to attachment theory, insecure attachment patterns impart greater risk for the maladaptive personality traits underlying BPD. Hence, insecure attachment might be indirectly related to BPD through its association with these traits. The current cross-sectional study used structural equation modeling to compare two competing models of the relationship between adult attachment patterns,

Judging Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review of Clinician Attitudes and Responses to Borderline Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with particularly stigmatizing connotations, particularly among mental health professionals. The goal of this study was to synthesize quantitative studies investigating the attitudes and responses of clinicians to BPD and to appraise the methodological quality of these studies. METHODS: A systematic search was carried out using MEDLINE Complete, CINAHL Complete, PsychoINFO, PsychARTICLES, Scopus, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Academic Search Complete. Study quality was rated using

The Complexity of Borderline Personality Disorder: Network Analysis of Personality Factors and Defense Styles in the Context of Borderline Personality Organization.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is known to share characteristics with a variety of personality disorders (PDs) and exhibits diverse patterns of defense mechanisms. To enhance our understanding of BPD, it's crucial to shift our focus from traditional categorical diagnostics to the dimensional traits shared with other PDs, as the borderline personality organization (BPO) model suggests. This approach illuminates the nuanced spectrum of BPD characteristics, offering deeper insights into its complexity. While studies have investigated the comorbidity of BPD with other PDs, resear

Cluster analysis of personality traits in psychiatric patients with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Though the heterogeneous expression of symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) is well-known, it is far from fully understood. Hybrid models combining dimensional and categorical ways of diagnosing BPD have been suggested to better handle this heterogeneity, but more research is needed. The aim of this study was to identify potential clusters in BPD, and evaluate if these clusters differed in diagnostic composition, severity, psychiatric symptoms, emotion regulation and control, or sociodemographic features. METHODS: Clusters were based on personality traits measured wit

[Co-occurring diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder and borderline personality disorder].

Co-occurring diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) have received growing attention in recent years. In a register-based study of ASD and BPD diagnoses established among individuals aged 18-40 in the Stockholm region, we examined cases where both diagnoses were present. The number of individuals diagnosed with co-occurring ASD and BPD increased markedly between 2012 and 2022. This group demonstrated significantly higher risk (odds ratio) of other psychiatric diagnoses and inpatient care compared to individuals with only ASD, only BPD, or a clinica

Desynchronization of diurnal rhythms in bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder.

It has long been proposed that diurnal rhythms are disturbed in bipolar disorder (BD). Such changes are obvious in episodes of mania or depression. However, detailed study of patients between episodes has been rare and comparison with other psychiatric disorders rarer still. Our hypothesis was that evidence for desynchronization of diurnal rhythms would be evident in BD and that we could test the specificity of any effect by studying borderline personality disorder (BPD). Individuals with BD (n = 36), BPD (n = 22) and healthy volunteers (HC, n = 25) wore a portable heart rate and actigraphy de

Different impulsivity profiles in borderline personality disorder and bipolar II disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and bipolar II disorder (BP II) share clinical characteristics including impulsivity. Their relationship is disputed. In this study, we investigated self-reported impulsivity in these patient groups and in a healthy control group. Effects of current mood state and of traumatic childhood experiences were explored. METHODS: Twenty-five patients with BPD without comorbid bipolar disorder; 20 patients with BP II without comorbid BPD; and 44 healthy control subjects completed the UPPS questionnaire which yields assessments of four components of i

Comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in borderline patients defines an impulsive subtype of borderline personality disorder.

In order to examine the impulsive profile of a BPD sample with comorbid ADHD, adult patients who met criteria for BPD were assessed for ADHD with the CAADID and the WURS. A high rate of ADHD in the BPD sample was found, with sixty-nine (38.1%) BPD patients diagnosed as having comorbid adult ADHD. BPD-ADHD group had higher rates of general substance use disorder (59.4% vs. 38.4%), antisocial personality disorder (7.2% vs. 0.9%) and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (21.7% vs. 6.3%). The BPD group without comorbid adult ADHD showed a higher rate of mood disorders (62.5% vs. 37.7%), panic

Childhood symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood attention-deficit /hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is known to be associated with adult Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). We investigated if any of the subdimensions of childhood ADHD, that is, impulsivity, inattention, or hyperactivity was more prominent in this association. METHODS: In a nation-wide cohort (N = 13,330), we utilized parent reported symptoms of childhood ADHD and clinically ascertained adult BPD diagnoses. The summed total scores of ADHD symptoms and its three subdimensions were used and standardized for effect size comparison. Associations were analyz

Comorbid bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder: Diagnosis using machine learning.

Comorbid bipolar disorder (BP) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) presents a diagnostic challenge in its differentiation from each condition individually. We aimed to use a machine learning (ML) approach to differentiate comorbid BP/BPD from both BP and BPD. Participants were assigned DSM diagnoses and compared on self-report measures examining personality, emotion regulation strategies and perceived parental experiences during childhood. 82 participants were assigned as BP, 52 as BPD and 53 as comorbid BP/BPD. ML-derived diagnoses had an accuracy of 79.6% in classifying BP/BPD vs. BP,

Structural MRI Brain Alterations in Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) share many behavioral features, such as periods of marked affective lability and instability. Although there is a symptomatic overlap, the two disorders may be differentiated based on longitudinal course, phenomenology, and treatment responsiveness. In addition, the emotional changes in BPD are generally influenced by interpersonal factors, whereas BD episodes tend to be more sustained. We performed a literature review on the structural MRI features of both disorders and compared the findings. There are differences in areas of whi

Rumination, posttraumatic stress disorder, and mood symptoms in borderline personality disorder.

Background: The interrelationship between mood disorders and borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been long debated in the literature. Increasing attention has also been paid to the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and BPD, as well as to the role of rumination in the development and severity of BPD. This study aims to evaluate the association of rumination, PTSD, and mood spectrum among patients with BPD with or without comorbid mood disorders. Methods: Fifty patients with BPD and 69 healthy controls were assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for the Dia

Dysfunctional affect regulation in borderline personality disorder and in somatoform disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although affect dysregulation is considered a core component of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and somatoform disorders (SoD), remarkably little research has focused on the prevalence and nature of affect dysregulation in these disorders. Also, despite apparent similarities, little is known about how dysfunctional under- and overregulation of affect and positive and negative somatoform and psychoform dissociative experiences inter-relate. Prior studies suggest a clear relationship between early childhood psychological trauma and affect dysregulation, especially when the care

Applying Personality Assessment Inventory Borderline Scales and Alternative Model for Personality Disorder Borderline Facets in Two Clinical Samples.

The Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) assesses personality pathology as a combination of impairment (Criterion A) and problematic personality traits (Criterion B). The current study explores the ability of the traditional Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) Borderline scales combined with new PAI-derived AMPD borderline personality disorder (BPD) facets in predicting DSM BPD criteria. The DSM BPD criteria were identified by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Disorders (
