Gray mold, caused by Botrytis cinerea, severely threatens strawberry production worldwide, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying strawberry resistance remain poorly understood. Here, we show that the transcription factor ETHYLENE INSENSITIVE 3 (FaEIN3), a strawberry EIN3/EIL homolog, positively regulates strawberry resistance to B. cinerea by directly activating transcription of the WRKY transcription factor gene FaWRKY40. FaWRKY40 further induces the cytokinin biosynthesis gene FaLOG1 and the jasmonic acid biosynthesis gene FaAOC4, thereby promoting hormone accumulation and enhancing diseas

Botrytis cinerea, the causative agent of gray mold, is a major fungal pathogen affecting a wide range of economically important crops. To identify sustainable alternatives to chemical fungicides, this study characterized the biocontrol potential of two bacterial strains, Serratia quinivorans NFX21 and Pseudomonas thivervalensis NFX104, through genomic analysis and functional assays targeting key stages of fungal growth and plant infection. The NFX21 and NFX104 strains significantly inhibited B. cinerea mycelial growth (~35%) and strongly suppressed conidial germination with performances compar

Plant responses to pathogens often rely on receptor-like cytoplasmic kinases (RLCKs) that mediate signaling through interactions with receptor kinases and downstream components. Here, we studied the tomato RLCK, TPK1b Related Protein Kinase (TPK09), and demonstrate its function in integrating defense with light stress responses. Tomato tpk09 mutants exhibited increased susceptibility to Botrytis cinerea and the vascular pathogen Fusarium oxysporum, whereas transgenic expression of TPK09 enhanced resistance to Botrytis. Disease severity in tpk09 mutants was elevated under light-emitting diode (

Fungal natural products have shown potential to control the resistance of Botrytis cinerea to synthetic fungicides. Bioassay-guided isolation from the Suaeda glauca-derived fungus Acremonium persicinum had obtained four novel 18-residue peptaibiotics, persicins A-D (1-4), showing antifungal potential against fungicide-resistant B. cinerea CJ-8. Their structures were elucidated through spectroscopic analyses and the modified Marfey's method. The representative persicin A (1) inhibited spore germination and prevented gray mold on table grapes. Studies on its antifungal mechanisms against B. cine

Nanotechnology-based pesticide delivery systems provide controlled release of agrochemicals along with enhanced stability, target specificity, and reduced environmental impact. Strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa), valued for their flavor, nutritional content, and antioxidant properties, face a short shelf-life and significant postharvest losses due to Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea)-induced decay, posing a challenge to producers. This study reports the development of a biocompatible, botanical nano-formulated fungicide (BNF) to manage B. cinerea, as a resistant post-harvest pathogen. BNF, encapsu

BACKGROUND: Modern agriculture is based on the application of synthetic agrochemicals to control multiple abiotic and biotic stresses. Nevertheless, owing to their negative effect on ecosystems and human health, their application is increasingly restricted. The use of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) as well as biological control agents (BCAs) represents a sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Bacillus velezensis 83 (Bv83) has been described as a BCA against several fungal phytopathogens.
RESULTS: In this work, we further study the molecular mechanisms behind t

To develop new fungicides with high efficiency, 46 novel sulfonamide derivatives were designed and synthesized by introducing pinacolone fragment into chesulfamide which was used as lead compound. All compounds were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and MS spectra, and the structure of compound P-27 was also confirmed by X-ray single crystal diffraction. It was found that a variety of compounds present excellent inhibitory effect against Botrytis cinerea. The inhibition rates of P-29 on tomato and strawberry were 90.24% (200 mg/L) and 100% (400 mg/L) in vivo respectively, which were better tha

Botrytis cinerea, the causal agent of gray mold is one of the major devastating fungal pathogens that occurs in strawberry cultivation and leads to massive losses. Due to the rapid emergence of resistant strains in recent years, an ecofriendly disease management strategy needs to be developed to control this aggressive pathogen. Bacillus velezensis CE 100 exhibited strong antagonistic activity with 53.05% against B. cinerea by dual culture method. In the present study, 50% of culture filtrate supplemented into PDA medium absolutely inhibited mycelial growth of B. cinerea whereas the highest co

Jasmonates (JAs) orchestrate immune responses upon wound/herbivore injury or infection by necrotrophic pathogens. Elucidation of catabolic routes has revealed new complexity in jasmonate metabolism. Two integrated pathways attenuate signaling by turning over the active hormone jasmonoyl-isoleucine (JA-Ile) through ω-oxidation or deconjugation, and define an indirect route forming the derivative 12OH-JA. Here, we provide evidence for a second 12OH-JA formation pathway by direct jasmonic acid (JA) oxidation. Three jasmonic acid oxidases (JAOs) of the 2-oxoglutarate dioxygenase family catalyze sp

Strawberries are available throughout the year either from production in the field or from high and low tunnel culture. Diversity of production conditions results in new challenges in controlling diseases before and after harvest. Fungicides have traditionally been used to control these diseases; however, their limitations necessitate a search for new approaches. We found that UV-C irradiation of Botrytis cinerea, a major pathogen of strawberry, can effectively kill this fungus if a dark period follows the treatment. The inclusion of a 4-h dark period resulted in almost complete kill of B. cin

Table grapes possess thin skins and a high moisture content, making them particularly susceptible to mechanical damage and fungal infection during shipping and storage, leading to deterioration. Cold plasma (CP) technology is an innovative nonthermal sterilization method that effectively inhibits microbial growth. This study investigated the effects of CP treatment on disease development, respiratory metabolism, and energy status of grapes inoculated with Botrytis cinerea. CP treatment significantly reduced the disease index, lesion diameter, and respiration rate of inoculated grapes. It inhib

BACKGROUND: Postharvest diseases result in major losses in fruits. Tomato is susceptible to postharvest rot caused by Botrytis cinerea and is regarded as a good model system to study postharvest disease and quality deterioration in fruit. To develop a safe and effective technique to alleviate disease and maintain fruit quality, the effects of methyl salicylate (MeSA) and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) either separately or combined on quality and gray mold caused by B. cinerea in tomato fruit were investigated.
RESULTS: The results showed that application of MeSA (0.05 mmol L-1 ) delayed fruit r

BACKGROUND: Resistance to carbendazim and other benzimidazole fungicides in Botrytis cinerea and most other fungi is usually conferred by one or several allelic mutations in the β-tubulin. Carbendazim resistance in Fusarium graminearum, however, differs from that in B. cinerea and other fungi in that F. graminearum has two β-tubulins (Fgtub1 and Fgtub2) rather than one, and the resistance is conferred by mutations in the β2 -tubulin. In a previous study, the β1 -tubulin of F. graminearum (Fgtub1) was replaced with the β-tubulin of B. cinerea conferring carbendazim resistance (BctubE198A). The

The rhizobacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa 7NSK2 produces secondary metabolites such as pyochelin (Pch), its precursor salicylic acid (SA), and the phenazine compound pyocyanin. Both 7NSK2 and mutant KMPCH (Pch-negative, SA-positive) induced resistance to Botrytis cinerea in wild-type but not in transgenic NahG tomato. SA-negative mutants of both strains lost the capacity to induce resistance. On tomato roots, KMPCH produced SA and induced phenylalanine ammonia lyase activity, while this was not the case for 7NSK2. In 7NSK2, SA is probably very efficiently converted to Pch. However, Pch alone a

Botrytis cinerea is a phytopathogenic fungus notorious for causing gray mold diseases worldwide. The biocontrol agent (BACs) Bacillus velezensis TCS001 inhibits B. cinerea via volatile organic compounds (VOCs). 2-Nonanone was identified as the predominant VOC and strongly suppressed mycelial growth (minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) 160 μL/L, minimal fungicidal concentration (MFC) 1280 μL/L) and reduced gray mold on cherry tomatoes. It induced morphological and ultrastructural abnormalities, impaired cell wall and membrane integrity, decreased ergosterol content and ATPase, succinate dehy

Gray mold, caused by Botrytis cinerea is a major cause of post-harvest rot of fresh fruits and vegetables. The utilization of selected microorganisms as biocontrol agents is a promising alternative to effectively control gray mold on tomatoes. The current study was conducted to explore potential biocontrol mechanisms of the Pseudomonas strain to control infections on post-harvest tomatoes. Among the 8 tested bacterial isolates, Pseudomonas protegens ML15 demonstrated antagonistic activity to Botrytis cinerea. Moreover, P. protegens ML15 exhibited the production of siderophores, hydrogen cyanid

Salicylic acid (SA) acts antagonistically to jasmonic acid (JA) in plant immunity. We previously reported that CATALASE2 (CAT2) promotes JA-biosynthetic acyl-CoA oxidase (ACX) activity to enhance plant resistance to necrotrophic Botrytis cinerea, and SA represses JA biosynthesis through inhibiting CAT2 activity, while the underlying mechanism remains to be further elucidated. Here, we report that the truncated CAT2 N-terminus (CAT2-N) interacts with and promotes ACX2/3, and CAT2-N-overexpressing plants have increased JA accumulation and enhanced resistance to B. cinerea B05.10, but compromised

Gray mold disease caused by Botrytis cinerea is a damaging postharvest disease in tomato plants, and it is known to be a limiting factor in tomato production. This study aimed to evaluate antifungal activities of Vernonia amygdalina leaf extracts against B. cinerea and to screen the phytochemical compound in the crude extract that had the highest antifungal activity. In this study, crude extracts of hexane, dichloromethane, methanol, and water extracts with concentration levels at 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 mg/mL were shown to significantly affect the inhibition of B. cinerea. Among the crude

Many types of yeast have been studied in the last few years as potential biocontrol agents against different phytopathogenic fungi. Their ability to control plant diseases is mainly through combined modes of action. Among them, antibiosis, competition for nutrients and niches, induction of systemic resistance in plants and mycoparasitism have been the most studied. In previous work, we have established that the epiphytic yeast Pseudozyma aphidis inhibits Botrytis cinerea through induced resistance and antibiosis. Here, we demonstrate that P. aphidis adheres to B. cinerea hyphae and competes wi
