Sleep advances : a journal of the Sleep Research Society2023eng
The focus of my research efforts rests with determining dysfunctional neural systems underlying disorders of sleep, and identifying interventions to overcome those disorders. Aberrant central and physiological control during sleep exerts serious consequences, including disruptions in breathing, motor control, blood pressure, mood, and cognition, and plays a major role in sudden infant death syndrome, congenital central hypoventilation, and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, among other concerns. The disruptions can be traced to brain structural injury, leading to inappropriate outcomes. Iden

OBJECTIVES: Generally, it is difficult for elderly patients with acquired brain injuries (ABI) to return to work (RTW). To assess whether elderly patients with ABI can return to their workplace, like working-age patients, we investigated medical and support records and compared the rates of RTW between the working-age and elderly groups.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study on RTW among inpatients with ABI was conducted. We collected the clinical data of inpatients who were admitted to the Department of Neurosurgery for acute treatment and participation in a health and employment support progr

Neuro-immune interactions are essential for our body's defense and homeostasis. Anatomical and physiological analyses have shown that the nervous system comprises multiple pathways that regulate the dynamics and functions of immune cells, which are mainly mediated by the autonomic nervous system and adrenal signals. These are disturbed when the neurons and circuits are damaged by diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). Injuries caused by stroke or trauma often cause immune dysfunction by abrogation of the immune-regulating neural pathways, which leads to an increased risk of infections.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the prevalence of preexisting conditions that could affect premorbid brain health, cognition, and functional independence among older adults with mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI), and the relationship between preexisting conditions, injury characteristics, and emergency department (ED) discharge location (home versus continued care).
METHODS: Older adults (N = 1,427; 55-104 years-old; 47.4% men) who underwent head computed tomography (CT) after acute head trauma were recruited from the ED. Researchers documented preexisting medical conditions retrospectively f

INTRODUCTION: In 2008, it was reported that 19.5% of service members previously deployed experienced a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Fifty-seven percent of those did not seek medical care. It was suggested that concerns with seeking care involved confidentiality and career issues. Objective: This study addressed mTBI history, medical treatment history, and stigmas associated with mTBI/concussion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An anonymous questionnaire was developed. Data collection occurred throughout March 2018 in conjunction with Brain Injury Awareness Month activities.
RESULTS: All 5,174

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in children are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Severe TBIs account for 15,000 admissions annually and a mortality rate of 24% in children in the United States. The purpose of this article is to explore pathophysiologic events, examine monitoring techniques, and explain current treatment modalities and nursing care related to caring for children with severe TBI. The primary injury of a TBI is because of direct trauma from an external force, a penetrating object, blast waves, or a jolt to the head. Secondary injury occurs because of alteration

Perinatal brain injuries are a leading cause of cerebral palsy worldwide. The potential of stem cell therapy to prevent or reduce these impairments has been widely discussed within the medical and scientific communities and an increasing amount of research is being conducted in this field. Animal studies support the idea that a number of stem cells types, including cord blood and mesenchymal stem cells have a neuroprotective effect in neonatal hypoxia-ischemia. Both these cell types are readily available in a clinical setting. The mechanisms of action appear to be diverse, including immunomodu

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of injury death and long-term disability in the USA. It commonly results from blunt (closed) or penetrating trauma. The majority of civilian TBI is caused by falls or motor vehicle collisions, whereas military TBI mainly results from explosions. Although penetrating injuries are less common than closed injuries in the civilian population, they are far more lethal. Unfortunately, the pathophysiologic differences between penetrating and closed TBI remain poorly understood due to the lack of studies on the subject. Many studies on the pr

BACKGROUND: Facial fractures can be associated with brain and cervical spine injuries because impact forces are transmitted through the head and neck. Although major brain injury is commonly recognized in these patients, incidence of minor brain injury is not well-known, despite potential morbidity and mortality.
OBJECTIVES: This prospective study aimed to determine the incidence of both major and minor brain injuries in 100 patients presenting to a craniofacial surgery service with facial fractures and to identify characteristics associated with brain injury.
METHODS: Data were collected fo

OBJECTIVE: To analyze characters of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in the diagnosis of mild trauma brain injuries (MTBI) in frontal lobe and to compare with conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: A total of 21 patients were selected, who all aged 12-51 years old and had injury within 24 hours. Computer tomography (CT) and the Glasgow Coma Scale were used to evaluate the degree of injury. All patients were diagnosed as MTBI, and 19 had conventional MRI, MRS and DTI. The major parameters of MRS were Probe-P sequence, TE = 144 or 35 ms,

Traumatic lesions near the superior margin of the brain frequently are caused by an anterior or posterior blow to the head. The injuries consist of disruptions of one or a few (with subdural bleeding) or of numerous or all (with instant death or immediate unconsciousness and later death because of simultaneous brain stem injuries) parasagittal bridging veins. Cerebral injuries close beneath the superior margin of the brain occur either alone or together with disruptions of parasagittal bridging veins. These injuries consist mainly of subcortical, perivascular or larger, hemorrhages and of inju

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury is a common cause of death after traumatic insults. Alcohol intoxication is a recognized contributor to the occurrence of these injuries. The specific effects of alcohol exposure on injury severity and subsequent outcomes, however, remain controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between blood alcohol levels (BAL) and outcomes in patients with isolated severe traumatic brain injuries (sTBI).
METHODS: During the calendar year 2003, as part of a pilot project, the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services obtained routine

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) frequently leads to long-term neurological deficits. Recent research also implicates cellular senescence-a state of permanent cell cycle arrest driven by DNA damage-as a key contributor to neuroinflammation and cognitive decline. This study investigates the cell-type specificity of senescence within glial and vascular cells of the neurovascular unit (NVU) following experimental TBI in a rat model.
METHODS: Rats underwent various TBI scenarios, including single severe TBI (sTBI), single mild TBI (mTBI), repetitive mild TBI (rmTBI) and repetitive sham-op

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious public health concern impacting millions of children and adolescents each year. Experiencing a brain injury during key critical periods of brain development can affect the normal formation of brain networks that are responsible for a range of complex neurocognitive outcomes. In addition, there are multiple pre- and postinjury factors that influence the trajectory of recovery and outcomes. In this review, we will focus on the current state of the literature within pediatric TBI; systematically review the available research on developmental aspects of TB

Brain injury is the main factor affecting the development and prognosis of the nervous system in premature infants. Early diagnosis and treatment are of great significance in reducing mortality and disability and improving the prognosis of premature infants. Craniocerebral ultrasound has become an important medical imaging method for evaluating the brain structure of premature infants due to its advantages of being non-invasive, cheap, simple, and bedside dynamic monitoring since it was applied to neonatal clinical practice. This article reviews the application of brain ultrasound to common br
