Risk estimates for meningiomas and other late effects after diagnostic X-ray exposure of the skull.

This study aims to investigate the contribution of diagnostic exposures to the rising rates of brain tumours and other neoplasms which are observed in several industrial nations. Included are benign tumours in the head and neck region and cataracts which are neglected in usual risk estimates by international and national radiation protection committees. Dose-effect relationships for tumours of the brain, skin, thyroid and other sites of the head region, leukaemia and cataracts are taken from the literature. Risk estimates are derived for paediatric head computed tomographies (CTs) as well as f

Mortality of brain tumors among asbestos insulation workers in the United States and Canada.

Death resulting from brain tumors among workers in the petrochemical industry have called attention to the possibility that these neoplasms may be the result of occupational exposure to carcinogens. We have examined the experience of a cohort of 17,800 insulation workers known to be at significant increased risk of cancer at a number of sites (lung, mesothelioma, gastrointestinal, oral cavity, pharyngeal, larynx, renal) to ascertain whether their asbestos exposure also increased their risk of brain tumors. From 1967 to 1979, there were 24 deaths from primary brain tumors in this cohort, somewh

Coexistence of intracranial solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma and right middle cerebral artery aneurysm.

Intracranial solitary fibrous tumors are rare mesenchymal neoplasms originating in the meninges and constitute a heterogeneous group of rare spindle cell tumors that include benign and malignant neoplasms of which hemangiopericytoma is nowadays considered a cellular phenotypic variant. From literatures, the incidence of coexistence of brain tumors and intracranial aneurysms is ~0.7-5.4%. Meningioma is the most frequent tumor coexisted with intracranial aneurysms, followed by pituitary adenoma, neuroepithelial tumor, and metastatic tumor. We would like to report a case of 74-year-old man harbor

Examination of low-incidence brain tumor responses in F344 rats following chemical exposures in National Toxicology Program carcinogenicity studies.

Neoplasms in the brain are uncommon in control Fischer 344 (F344) rats; they occur at a rate of less than 1% in 2-yr toxicity/carcinogenicity studies. Furthermore, only 10 of nearly 500 studies conducted by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) showed any evidence of chemically related neoplastic effects in the brain. Generally, the brain tumor responses were considered equivocal, because the characteristics of potential neurocarcinogenic agents (such as statistically significant increased incidences, decreased latency and/or survival, and demonstration of dose-response relationships) were not

Brain and spine imaging findings in AIDS patients.

Central nervous system complications in AIDS patients are common and often the cause of severe morbidity and mortality. Most symptomatic central nervous system complications in AIDS patients involve the brain, principally in the form of HIV encephalitis, various other forms of infection, or development of neoplasms. The imaging findings are important to recognize because in many instances the underlying brain lesions are responsive to medical therapy.

Diagnosis of Tooth Agenesis in Childhood and Risk for Neoplasms in Adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Tooth agenesis, the congenital absence of one or more teeth, can be diagnosed in children in the first decade of life. Tooth agenesis is a phenotypic feature of conditions such as ectodermal dysplasia, cleft lip, cleft palate, Down syndrome, and Van der Woude syndrome. Tooth agenesis can also be nonsyndromic. Studies have shown an association between the genetic determinants of nonsyndromic tooth agenesis and neoplasms in adulthood. METHODS: This review of the implications of tooth agenesis as a risk indicator for neoplasms in adulthood is based on a search of PubMed to identify p

A Rare Radiological Mimic of Intracranial Hemorrhage-Interpeduncular Lipoma.

Intracranial lipomas are rare congenital malformations which are neither hamartomas nor true neoplasms. Rarely lipomas show blooming on susceptibilty weighted images and this can be confused with subacute blood especially if the patient present with headache and MRI brain is the only available image. Do fat saturated images or CT scan if T1 weighted MRI brain shows hyperintensity along with blooming on susceptibilty weighted images.

Desmoplastic ganglioglioma: report of two non-infantile cases.

Two supratentorial desmoplastic gangliogliomas arising in a 15-year-old boy and a 25-year-old man are reported. Both tumors reached the brain surface and exhibited large cysts. They showed intense desmoplasia and tumor cells of astrocytic and ganglionic differentiation. In one case the ganglionic nature was only demonstrable by immunohistochemistry. Such neoplasms can no longer be regarded as exclusively infantile brain tumors.

Upregulation of endoglin (CD105) expression during childhood brain tumor-related angiogenesis. Anti-angiogenic therapy.

During postnatal development, the formation of new blood vessels is possible only through angiogenesis. The initial growth of solid neoplasms, including childhood brain tumors, during the genetically determined stages of carcinogenesis, even at clinically undetectable sizes (a few mm3), depends upon the continuous formation of new blood capillaries [i.e. neovascularization (NV)/neoplasm-related angiogenesis (NRA)]. The generation of a malignant, invasive cellular immunophenotype (CIP) and distant metastases are also NRA-dependent processes. Endothelial cells undergo rapid proliferation during

Management of non-hepatic distant metastases in neuroendocrine neoplasms.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms represent an uncommon disease with an increasing incidence. Thanks to improvements in diagnostic and therapeutic methods, metastases previously considered uncommon, such as bone metastases, or even very rare, such as brain, orbital and cardiac metastases, are more frequently found in daily practice. Due to the great heterogeneity of these neoplasms, there is a lack of high-quality evidence on the management of patients with these types of metastases. The aim of this review is to provide the current state of the art, reviewing neuroendocrine neoplasm specific studies an

High-Grade Malignant Pleuropulmonary Neoplasm With YAP1::MAML2 Gene Fusion.

A 17-month-old male presented with a 4-week history of cough, and a CT scan revealed a large right intrathoracic mass with metastases to the brain and femur. Tumor biopsy demonstrated a high-grade malignant neoplasm with histological and immunostaining features most suggestive of, but not entirely typical for type III pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB). Molecular analysis identified a YAP1::MAML2 gene fusion and a complex copy number profile, with no mutations in DICER1 or TP53. The patient initially improved with chemotherapy, but progressive brain metastases led to palliative care, and he passed

Membranous expression of glucose transporter-1 protein (GLUT-1) in embryonal neoplasms of the central nervous system.

The human erythrocyte GLUT-1 is a transmembrane protein which facilitates transport of glucose in the cell in an energy-independent fashion. Neuroectodermal stem cells show strong membrane immunoreactivitry with this marker at early developmental stages in rodents. Membranous expression by undifferentiated neuroectodermal cells gradually decreases while GLUT-1 becomes confined to the endothelial cells, when these acquire blood-brain barrier function. We thus sought to determine whether GLUT-1 expression was limited to embryonal neoplasms of the central nervous system (CNS) which are presumably

Infrequent alterations of the p15, p16, CDK4 and cyclin D1 genes in non-astrocytic human brain tumors.

While several genetic alterations associated with the evolution of the astrocytomas have been identified, the molecular basis of non-astrocytic brain tumors has remained largely unknown. In this study, p15, p16, CDK4 and cyclin D1 genes were analyzed in 69 nonastrocytic human brain tumors, including 17 oligodendrogliomas, 16 medulloblastomas/primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs), 14 ependymomas and 22 meningiomas. Southern blot analysis of DNA from frozen samples showed no homozygous deletions in p15 or p16 genes in any of these tumors. No mobility shift was found by PCR-single-strand confo

Return to play after brain tumor surgery in children.

PURPOSE: Children with a history of brain tumors do not appear to be at a significantly higher risk of sports-related injuries. Nevertheless, according to the systematic review and survey conducted by Perreault et al., 75% of healthcare professionals restrict their patients' participation in physical activities after brain tumor surgery. The aim of our study was to verify whether children after brain tumor surgery return to physical education (PE) classes. It was also an attempt to explore factors limiting return to physical activity. METHODS: Patients after brain tumor surgery, ≤ 18 years ol

Solitary parietal lobe histoplasmoma mimicking a brain tumor.

We describe a rare case of Histoplasma infection, which manifested only as a brain histoplasmoma, in a previously healthy woman who had no underlying predisposing conditions. Only a few cases of such intracranial histoplasmomas have been reported but this entity can mimic a brain neoplasm and should be a diagnostic consideration during the evaluation of ring-enhancing brain lesions.

Brain Metastasis of Pleural Mesothelioma after a Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an uncommon, fatal neoplasm induced by asbestos exposure. Brain metastases from MPM are extremely rare, with most such cases diagnosed only at the time of autopsy. This report describes what we believe to be the first case of MPM metastasizing to the brain after a subarachnoid hemorrhage, as well as the subsequent surgical removal of the brain metastasis.

Paraneoplastic brainstem encephalomyelitis and atypical form of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy in patient with testicular germinal tumor-is this an overlap syndrome? a case report.

Paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes are diagnosed when neurologic symptoms are associated with neoplasm and other causative factors are excluded. They may precede or be simultaneous to various types of neoplasms, mainly malignant. In men up to 45-50 years old the most common cancer causing the paraneoplastic syndrome is testicle tumor, manifesting usually as limbic/brain stem encephalitis and myelitis. Usually effective treatment of underlying neoplasm brings resolution of neurologic symptoms. But corticosteroids and intravenuous immunoglobulins are also used. In the presented case a 37-year-o
