An independent SSVEP-based brain-computer interface in locked-in syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) allow healthy subjects to communicate. However, their dependence on gaze control prevents their use with severely disabled patients. Gaze-independent SSVEP-BCIs have been designed but have shown a drop in accuracy and have not been tested in brain-injured patients. In the present paper, we propose a novel independent SSVEP-BCI based on covert attention with an improved classification rate. We study the influence of feature extraction algorithms and the number of harmonics. Finally, we test online c

An efficient P300-based brain-computer interface for disabled subjects.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a communication system that translates brain-activity into commands for a computer or other devices. In other words, a BCI allows users to act on their environment by using only brain-activity, without using peripheral nerves and muscles. In this paper, we present a BCI that achieves high classification accuracy and high bitrates for both disabled and able-bodied subjects. The system is based on the P300 evoked potential and is tested with five severely disabled and four able-bodied subjects. For four of the disabled subjects classification accuracies of 100

Different classification techniques considering brain computer interface applications.

In this work the application of different machine learning techniques for classification of mental tasks from electroencephalograph (EEG) signals is investigated. The main application for this research is the improvement of brain computer interface (BCI) systems. For this purpose, Bayesian graphical network, neural network, Bayesian quadratic, Fisher linear and hidden Markov model classifiers are applied to two known EEG datasets in the BCI field. The Bayesian network classifier is used for the first time in this work for classification of EEG signals. The Bayesian network appeared to have a s

Physiological regulation of thinking: brain-computer interface (BCI) research.

The discovery of event-related desynchronization (ERD) and event-related synchronization (ERS) by Pfurtscheller paved the way for the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). BCIs allow control of computers or external devices with the regulation of brain activity only. Two different research traditions produced two different types of BCIs: invasive BCIs, realized with implanted electrodes in brain tissue and noninvasive BCIs using electrophysiological recordings in humans such as electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) and metabolic changes such as functional mag

Information transfer rate in a five-classes brain-computer interface.

The information transfer rate, given in bits per trial, is used as an evaluation measurement in a brain-computer interface (BCI). Three subjects performed four motor-imagery (left hand, right hand, foot, and tongue) and one mental-calculation task. Classification of the electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns is based on band power estimates and hidden Markov models (HMMs). We propose a method that combines the EEG patterns based on separability into subsets of two, three, four, and five mental tasks. The information transfer rates of the BCI systems comprised of these subsets are reported. The ac

MTDANet: lightweight multi-scale temporal hierarchy and distance-regularized linear attention network for motor imagery brain-computer interfaces.

OBJECTIVE: Motor-imagery (MI) electroencephalography (EEG) offers a non-invasive route to brain-computer interaction, yet reliable single-trial decoding remains difficult because task-related patterns are weak, nonstationary, and distributed over multiple temporal scales. This study investigates whether a staged local-to-global model can integrate fine temporal-spatial structure with longer-range context without relying on unrestricted self-attention. APPROACH: We propose MTDANet, an architecture that combines multi-scale temporal-spatial feature extraction, factorized temporal consolidation,

INTRODUCTION: Enhancing the command capacity of motor imagery (MI)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) remains a significant challenge in neuroinformatics, especially for real-world assistive applications. This study explores a multiclass BCI system designed to classify multiple MI tasks using a low-cost EEG device. METHODS: A BCI system was developed to classify six mental states: resting state, left and right hand movement imagery, tongue movement, and left and right lateral bending, using EEG data collected with the Emotiv EPOC X headset. Seven participants underwent a body awareness tr

Stiffness-Switchable Conductive Nanocomposites with Temperature-Invariant Conductivity for Long-Term Brain-Computer Interfaces on Hair-Covered Scalp.

Reliable neural recording on densely hair-covered scalp remains challenging due to the incompatibility between efficient hair penetration, conformal skin contact, and low-impedance electrical interfacing. Here, we report a claw-shaped dry electrode that integrates thermoresponsive phase-transition networks for reversible stiffness switching, with temperature-invariant conductivity enabled by crystallization-induced confinement, achieving comfortable, low-impedance neural interfacing on densely hair-covered scalps. The electrode comprises a bottlebrush polymer/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWC

Real-world clinical characteristics of motor disorders for personalised brain-computer interfaces: phenotypic insights from a specialised clinic.

Motor dysfunction caused by neurological disorders such as stroke, spinal cord injury and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis has become a major global public health issue. Conventional rehabilitation approaches yield limited efficacy, highlighting the urgent need for innovative therapies. Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology offers a promising avenue for motor function restoration by decoding motor intentions and driving external devices or providing sensory feedback. However, current BCI development has predominantly emphasised technical performance metrics, lacking systematic investigation i

CGNet: A Complex-valued Graph Network for jointly learning amplitude-phase information in EEG-based brain-computer interfaces.

The synergy between amplitude and phase in electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) provides comprehensive and essential insights into neural oscillatory processes. However, constrained by real-valued computation paradigms, most deep learning methods have to process amplitude and phase independently, neglecting their crucial interaction mechanisms. To address this issue, we construct a Complex-valued Graph Network (CGNet) to capture comprehensive information from EEG signals, where both amplitude and phase information are encoded into the complex-valued representation.

A Synergy of Convolutional Neural Networks for Sensor-Based EEG Brain-Computer Interfaces to Enhance Motor Imagery Classification.

Enhancing motor disability assessment and its imagery classification is a significant concern in contemporary medical practice, necessitating reliable solutions to improve patient outcomes. One promising avenue is the use of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), which establish a direct communication pathway between users and machines. This technology holds the potential to revolutionize human-machine interaction, especially for individuals diagnosed with motor disabilities. Despite this promise, extracting reliable control signals from noisy brain data remains a critical challenge. In this paper,

Paradigms and methods of noninvasive brain-computer interfaces in motor or communication assistance and rehabilitation: a systematic review.

Noninvasive brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have rapidly developed over the past decade. This new technology utilizes magneto-electrical recording or hemodynamic imaging approaches to acquire neurophysiological signals noninvasively, such as electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). These noninvasive signals have different temporal resolutions ranging from milliseconds to seconds and various spatial resolutions ranging from centimeters to millimeters. Thanks to these neuroimaging technologies, various BCI modalities like steady-state visual evoked potenti

A Novel Neurorehabilitation Prognosis Prediction Modeling on Separated Left-Right Hemiplegia Based on Brain-Computer Interfaces Assisted Rehabilitation.

It is essential for neuroscience and clinic to estimate the influence of neuro-intervention after brain damage. Most related studies have used Mirrored Contralesional-Ipsilesional hemispheres (MCI) methods flipping the axial neuroimaging on the x-axis in prognosis prediction. But left-right hemispheric asymmetry in the brain has become a consensus. MCI confounds the intrinsic brain asymmetry with the asymmetry caused by unilateral damage, leading to questions about the reliability of the results and difficulties in physiological explanations. We proposed the Separated Left-Right hemiplegia (SL

Toward Brain-Computer Interface motor rehabilitation for people with Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease in which the immune system attacks the myelin sheaths around nerves. People with MS (pwMS) often experience pain, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, and reduced mobility. Today, MS is incurable, and treatments can at best slow the progression of the disease and manage symptoms. We conducted a preliminary, single-arm study using a motor-imagery brain-computer interface (MI-BCI) with functional electrical stimulation (FES) and virtual reality avatar targeting gait in pwMS. METHODS: Twenty-six pwMS were enrolled; 24 complete

sEEG-based brain-computer interfacing in a large adult and pediatric cohort.

Objective. Stereoelectroencephalography (sEEG) is a mesoscale intracranial monitoring technique that records from the brain volumetrically with depth electrodes. sEEG is typically used for monitoring of epileptic foci, but can also serve as a useful tool to study distributed brain dynamics. Herein, we detail the implementation of sEEG-based brain-computer interfacing (BCI) across a diverse and large patient cohort.Approach. Across 27 subjects (15 female, 31 total feedback experiments), we identified channels with increases in broadband during hand, tongue, or foot movements using a simple bloc

Early feasibility of an embedded bi-directional brain-computer interface for ambulation.

Current treatments for paraplegia induced by spinal cord injury (SCI) are often limited by the severity of the injury. The accompanying loss of sensory and motor functions often results in reliance on wheelchairs, which in turn causes reduced quality of life and increased risk of co-morbidities. While brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) for ambulation have shown promise in restoring or replacing lower extremity motor functions, none so far have simultaneously implemented sensory feedback functions. Additionally, many existing BCIs for ambulation rely on bulky external hardware that make them ill-

Brain-Computer Interface: Applications to Speech Decoding and Synthesis to Augment Communication.

Damage or degeneration of motor pathways necessary for speech and other movements, as in brainstem strokes or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), can interfere with efficient communication without affecting brain structures responsible for language or cognition. In the worst-case scenario, this can result in the locked in syndrome (LIS), a condition in which individuals cannot initiate communication and can only express themselves by answering yes/no questions with eye blinks or other rudimentary movements.
