Peripheral Regulation of Central Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Expression through the Vagus Nerve.

The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is an extensively studied neurotrophin es sential for both developing the brain and maintaining adult brain function. In the adult hippocampus, BDNF is critical for maintaining adult neurogenesis. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis is involved not only in memory formation and learning ability, but also mood regulation and stress responses. Accordingly, decreased levels of BDNF, accompanied by low levels of adult neurogenesis, occurs in brains of older adults with impaired cognitive function and in those of patients with major depression disorder. Serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels as a predictor for Alzheimer disease progression.

BACKGROUND: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and decreased peripheral levels of this protein are associated with an increased risk of developing the disease. This study focuses on whether serum BDNF levels could be used as a predictor of AD progression. METHODS: In this longitudinal observational study, we recruited cognition normal participants (N = 98) and AD (N = 442) from the Clinic at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital. We conducted a mini-mental status exam, a 12-item memory test, a categorical verbal flue

Impact of low-dose Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) on atrial fibrillation recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia worldwide and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite the effectiveness of catheter-based ablation, periprocedural complication and recurrences remain a concern. In this context, we aim to appraise the potential impact of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) on reducing episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). METHODS: 22 patients with an established diagnosis of PAF and without structural heart disease were considered. Every patient received 20 drops of GUNA-BDNF administered in the morning. Du

Repeated methamphetamine exposure decreases plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels in rhesus monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is known to prevent methamphetamine (METH)-induced neurotoxicity and plays a role in various stages of METH addiction. However, there is a lack of research with longitudinal design on changes in plasma BDNF levels in active METH-dependent individuals. AIMS: The aim of the study was to investigate changes in BDNF levels during METH self-administration in monkeys. METHODS: This study measured plasma BDNF levels in three male rhesus monkeys with continuous METH exposure and four male control rhesus monkeys without METH exposure. Changes in pl

β3AR-Dependent Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) Generation Limits Chronic Postischemic Heart Failure.

BACKGROUND: Loss of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/TrkB (tropomyosin kinase receptor B) signaling accounts for brain and cardiac disorders. In neurons, β-adrenergic receptor stimulation enhances local BDNF expression. It is unclear if this occurs in a pathophysiological relevant manner in the heart, especially in the β-adrenergic receptor-desensitized postischemic myocardium. Nor is it fully understood whether and how TrkB agonists counter chronic postischemic left ventricle (LV) decompensation, a significant unmet clinical milestone. METHODS: We conducted in vitro studies using neo

Brain derived neurotrophic factor in perioperative neurocognitive disorders: Current evidence and future directions.

An increase in the age of surgical patients as well as the volume of surgeries is associated with a rise in perioperative neurocognitive disorders. These disorders encompass acute delirium and longer-term cognitive dysfunctions. Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin that plays a dynamic role in a series of neurological functions including neuroplasticity, neurogenesis and synaptic regulation. Given the possible alterations to brain physiology in response to surgery, this review aims to explore the relationship between changes in central and peripheral BDNF concentrations a

Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor: A Novel Dynamically Regulated Therapeutic Modulator in Neurological Disorders.

The growth factor brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and its receptor tropomyosin-related kinase receptor type B (TrkB) play an active role in numerous areas of the adult brain, where they regulate the neuronal activity, function, and survival. Upregulation and downregulation of BDNF expression are critical for the physiology of neuronal circuits and functioning in the brain. Loss of BDNF function has been reported in the brains of patients with neurodegenerative or psychiatric disorders. This article reviews the BDNF gene structure, transport, secretion, expression and functions in the

Lipid profile in Parkinson's disease: The potential role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease manifested as increased tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity, and postural instability. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is essential for neurocognitive function. However, its cardiometabolic effect has recently been identified in health and disease, but not in PD. Therefore, the current study examined the relationship of BDNF with glucose and lipid profile. METHODS: This was a cross sectional comparative study where PD patients (n = 26) and age-matched healthy controls (n = 27) were recruited. Blood samples were drawn to determ

Expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in rapid ejaculator rats: A further study.

Limited evidence has indicated that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) may be involved in the neurobiology of premature ejaculation (PE). This study aimed to investigate BDNF levels in the central and peripheral nervous systems of a rapid ejaculation model. Eighteen male rats were selected and classified as 'sluggish', 'normal' and 'rapid' ejaculators on the basis of ejaculation frequency during copulatory behavioural tests. BDNF levels in specific brain regions, spinal cord and serum were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Consistent with the results in PE patients

Transcranial direct current stimulation induces hippocampal metaplasticity mediated by brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique used to modulate neuronal excitability via externally applied electric fields. Despite the positive effects of tDCS in a wide range of neurological disorders in humans, its mechanism of action remains poorly understood. Here we investigated cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the aftereffects of anodal tDCS on the induction of long-term potentiation (LTP), a cellular correlate of learning and memory, at Schaffer collateral-CA1 synapses. We found that hippocampal CA1 LTP was enhanced in slices

MicroRNA-613 regulates the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive loss of memory and other cognitive functions and presents an increasing clinical challenge in terms of diagnosis and treatment. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays an important role in neuronal survival and proliferation. In the present study, the mRNA and protein expression level of BDNF was detected in serum, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT), and hippocampus in APP/PS1 mice. A significant decrease of BDNF mRNA and p

Reduced serum concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in transsexual Brazilian men.

Serum BDNF levels are significantly decreased in transsexual Brazilian women when compared to cis-sexual men. Since transsexual men are also exposed to chronic social stress and have a high prevalence of associated psychopathologies, it is plausible to inquire if BDNF serum levels are altered in transsexual men as well. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate differences in BDNF serum level of transsexual men when compared to cis-sexual men and women. Our sample comprises 27 transsexual men, 31 cis-sexual women and 30 cis-sexual men recruited between 2011 and 2015. We observed that BDNF serum

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor Val66Met polymorphism and early life adversity affect hippocampal volume.

The interaction between adverse life events during childhood and genetic factors is associated with a higher risk to develop major depressive disorder (MDD). One of the polymorphisms found to be associated with MDD is the Val66MET polymorphism of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). The aim of our two-center study was to determine how the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism and childhood adversity affect the volumetric measures of the hippocampus in healthy individuals and people with MDD. In this two-center study, 62 adult patients with MDD and 71 healthy matched controls underwent high-resolutio

Serum concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in patients with gender identity disorder.

Gender Identity Disorder (GID) is characterized by a strong and persistent cross-gender identification that affects different aspects of behavior. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a critical role in neurodevelopment and neuroplasticity. Altered BDNF-signaling is thought to contribute to the pathogenesis of psychiatric disordersand is related to traumatic life events. To examine serum BDNF levels, we compared one group of DSM-IV GID patients (n = 45) and one healthy control group (n = 66). Serum BDNF levels were significantly decreased in GID patients (p = 0.013). This data suppor
