Camelina is an emerging oilseed crop whose deoiled meal has considerable potential as a protein ingredient for food and feed applications. However, its utilization is limited by glucosinolates (GLs), which impart toxicity and undesirable flavors. Although conventional hexane extraction efficiently extracts oil, it retains GLs. Therefore, this study evaluated a novel ammonium hydroxide-ethanol-hexane (NH4OH-EtOH-hexane) extraction system to address the need for effective GL detoxification while simultaneously recovering oil and investigated its effects on the functional properties of protein hy

In the past few decades, there has been a lot of interest in plant constituents for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-proliferative properties. However, concerns have been raised on their potential toxic effects particularly when consumed at high dose. The anti-thyroid effects of some plant constituents have been known for some time. Indeed, epidemiological observations have shown the causal association between staple food based on brassicaceae or soybeans and the development of goiter and/or hypothyroidism. Herein, we review the main plant constituents that interfe

This work was planned for providing useful information about the possibility of using serpentine adapted plants for phytoextraction of cadmium, element scarcely represented in such metalliferous environment. To this aim, we investigated variation in cadmium tolerance, accumulation and translocation in three Alyssum plants with different phenotypes: Alyssum bertolonii, that is a serpentine endemic nickel hyperaccumulator, and two populations of Alyssum montanum, one adapted and one not adapted to serpentine soils. Plants were hydroponically cultivated in presence of increasing concentrations of

In recent decades, the food system has been faced with the significant problem of increasing food waste. Therefore, the feed industry, supported by scientific research, is attempting to valorise the use of discarded biomass as co-products for the livestock sector, in line with EU objectives. In parallel, the search for functional products that can ensure animal health and performances is a common fundamental goal for both animal husbandry and feeding. In this context, camelina cake (CAMC), cardoon cake (CC) and cardoon meal (CM), due valuable nutritional profile, represent prospective alternat

Anisakis pegreffii (Nematoda: Anisakidae) is a marine parasitic nematode responsible for anisakiasis, a zoonotic disease acquired through the consumption of raw or undercooked fish. With the rising popularity of dishes such as sushi and sashimi, the risk of infection has grown, prompting the need for effective food-safety measures. This study investigates the nematocidal effects of commercial wasabi substitute paste (WSP) and its bioactive compound, allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), on third-stage larvae (L3) of A. pegreffii, and explores their associated stress-response mechanisms. WSP at 1 g/mL a

Processed genes are functional genes that have arisen as a result of the retrotransposition of mRNA molecules. We found 6 genes that generated processed genes in the common ancestor of five Brassicaceae species (Arabidopsis thaliana, Arabidopsis lyrata, Capsella rubella, Brassica rapa and Thellungiella parvula). These processed genes have therefore been kept for at least 30millionyears. Analyses of the Ka/Ks ratio of these genes, and of those having given rise to them, show that they evolve relatively slowly and suggest that the processed genes maintained the same function as that of their par

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a key endogenous gasotransmitter involved in vascular homeostasis. Among dietary phytochemicals, glucosinolates (GSLs) from Brassicaceae represent natural H2S-releasing compounds with nutraceutical potential. This study introduces Raphanus sativus cv. Tango microgreens, grown through a fully controlled soilless hydroponic system, as a standardized and sustainable bioplatform for GSLs production. An HPLC-qQq-MS/MS method was validated for the accurate identification and quantification of intact GSLs, and cultivation conditions were optimized to maximize their accumulat

The reactive oxygen species (ROS) burst is a hallmark of immune responses, and its fine-tuned regulation is essential for balancing plant immunity and growth. Although mechanistic understanding of ROS production has improved in Arabidopsis, corresponding knowledge remains sparse in crops, particularly in the non-Brassicaceae species that lack PBL13-mediated negative regulation of the ROS burst. Here, we report an RLCK-V subfamily member in potato, StSOAK1, which negatively regulates disease resistance to the oomycete Phytophthora infestans and the fungus Botrytis cinerea. Furthermore, the pota

With a global increase in mortality, particularly in low-income countries, cancer remains one of the most devastating diseases. Medicinal plants rich in phytochemicals have shown promise as chemoprotective and anticancer agents. As a result, in this study, we compiled a list of medicinal plant species that have been used to treat cancer in the last decade. The results of our review show that 170 plant species from 53 plant families have been used to treat various types of cancer. Plant species are categorised based on their taxonomic position and level of cytotoxicity (very strong, strong, cyt

Moringa oleifera Lam. is rich in phytochemical compounds especially glucosinolates (GSs) and isothiocyanates (ITCs), which are active compounds for cancer chemoprevention benefits of Brassicaceae vegetables. In this study, we determined the total contents of GSs and ITCs and their specific profiles in different Moringa tissues including seeds, stems, leaves and roots. Seeds (seeds with shell and seed kernel) showed significantly higher levels of total GSs and ITCs than that of other Moringa tissues. The hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) releasing capacity of total ITCs extracted from different Moringa ti

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a devastating plant pathogen that causes substantial losses in various agricultural crops. Although plants have developed some well-known defense mechanisms against invasive fungi, much remains to be learned about plant responses to fungal pathogens. In this study, we investigated how S. sclerotiorum infection affects plant primary and secondary metabolism in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Our results showed that soluble sugar and amino acid content changed significantly in A. thaliana leaves upon fungal colonization, with a decrease in sucrose and an increas

Agronomic parameters have been extensively studied under lab conditions to determine effect of nanoparticles (NPs). However, the yield characteristics have not been determined especially to biodiesel producing crops. This study explores the effect of copper sulfide (CuS) NPs on the growth, biochemical properties, productivity, and oil content of Eruca sativa under field condition. The oil extracted from E. sativa seeds was converted to biodiesel via transesterification reaction and analyzed through FT-IR, GC-MS and NMR. Further the fuel properties were compared with international standards. Th

PURPOSE: Phenobarbital is a commonly employed antidepressant and anti-epileptic drug. The cancer promoting activity of this genotoxic xenobiotic is often ignored. It is responsible for oxidative stress leading to modulation in xenobiotic and antioxidative enzymes. Glucosinolates and more specifically their hydrolytic products are known for their antioxidative and anticancer activities. The present study involves the analysis of hepatoprotective effect of erucin (isolated from Eruca sativa (Mill.) Thell.) against phenobarbital mediated hepatic damage in male wistar rats.
