The regulatory role of phytohormones in plant drought tolerance.

This paper highlights the role of various signaling hormones in drought stress tolerance. It explains how phytohormones act and interact under drought conditions. Drought stress significantly impairs plant growth, development and productivity. The likelihood of adverse impacts of drought will increase due to variations in global climate patterns. Phytohormones serve as key regulators of drought tolerance mechanisms in plants. The in-depth understanding of the role and signaling of such hormones is thus of great significance for plant stress management. In this review, we conducted a bibliometr

TaACTIN7-D regulates plant height and grain shape in bread wheat.

Exploitation of new gene resources and genetic networks contributing to the control of crop yield-related traits, such as plant height, grain size, and shape, may enable us to breed modern high-yielding wheat varieties through molecular methods. In this study, via ethylmethanesulfonate mutagenesis, we identify a wheat mutant plant, mu-597, that shows semi-dwarf plant architecture and round grain shape. Through bulked segregant RNA-seq and map-based cloning, the causal gene for the semi-dwarf phenotype of mu-597 is located. We find that a single-base mutation in the coding region of TaACTIN7-D

Biochemical Insights into the Ability of Lemna minor L. Extract to Counteract Copper Toxicity in Maize.

Metal trace elements (MTE) can damage crops if present in excessive amounts in the environment. This research investigated the effect of a plant extract of an aquatic species, Lemna minor L. (duckweed) (LE), on the ability of maize to cope with copper (Cu) toxicity. LE reversed the effects of Cu2+ on photosynthetic activity (Pn), evapotranspiration (E), stomatal conductance (gs), sub-stomatal CO2 concentration (Ci) and biomass which did not differ from the untreated controls. LE did not regulate the amount of copper in maize leaves, but compared to Cu-treated samples, the extract decreased the

The physiological mechanism underlying root elongation in response to nitrogen deficiency in crop plants.

In response to low nitrogen stress, multiple hormones together with nitric oxide signaling pathways work synergistically and antagonistically in crop root elongation. Changing root morphology allows plants to adapt to soil nutrient availability. Nitrogen is the most important essential nutrient for plant growth. An important adaptive strategy for crops responding to nitrogen deficiency is root elongation, thereby accessing increased soil space and nitrogen resources. Multiple signaling pathways are involved in this regulatory network, working together to fine-tune root elongation in response t

Molecular mechanisms and regulatory networks of salt stress tolerance in plants.

Soil salinity is a major threat to crop productivity, sustainable agriculture, and global food security, with more than 833 million hectares of land affected worldwide. Salt stress restricts plant growth through osmotic stress, ion toxicity, oxidative damage, membrane disruption, reduced photosynthesis, and yield loss. Plants respond through coordinated regulatory networks that connect early stress perception with ion balance, osmotic adjustment, hormone signaling, transcript regulation, and protein modification. Recent advances have identified several sensory and signaling modules involved in

Unveiling exogenous potential of phytohormones as sustainable arsenals against plant pathogens: molecular signaling and crosstalk insights.

Plants frequently confront pathogens that disrupt physiological and molecular functions, ultimately reducing agricultural yields. To counter these challenges, plants activate sophisticated defense mechanisms to recognize stress signals while optimizing growth. Phytohormones signaling pathways and their crosstalk are central to regulating plant growth, development and defense. Numerous proteins associated with phytohormone signaling pathways have been identified, including receptors for several vital hormones. Previous studies indicate that defense phytohormones, like salicylic acid (SA), jasmo

Disruption of Photomorphogenesis Leads to Abnormal Chloroplast Development and Leaf Variegation in Camellia sinensis.

Camellia sinensis cv. 'Yanlingyinbiancha' is a leaf-variegated mutant with stable genetic traits. The current study aimed to reveal the differences between its albino and green tissues, and the molecular mechanism underlying the variegation. Anatomic analysis showed the chloroplasts of albino tissues to have no intact lamellar structure. Photosynthetic pigment in albino tissues was significantly lower than that in green tissues, whereas all catechin components were more abundant in the former. Transcriptome analysis revealed most differentially expressed genes involved in the biosynthesis of p

Arabica coffee SBP transcription factor family members respond to brown leaf spot stress by regulating their expression.

Coffee brown spot is a prevalent foliar fungal disease that seriously threatens the survival and yield of Coffea arabica L. To explore the molecular basis of disease resistance, we conducted a genome-wide identification and analysis of the SBP gene family in C. arabica L. A total of 22 CaSBP genes were identified and classified into three phylogenetic subfamilies, distributed across 12 chromosomes and including nine segmentally duplicated gene pairs. Cis-element analysis revealed a high proportion (55.37%) of hormone-related regulatory elements in CaSBP promoters. Integrated transcriptomic and

A DUF21 domain-containing protein regulates plant dwarfing in watermelon.

Dwarf or semidwarf plant structures are well suited for intensive farming, maximizing yield, and minimizing labor costs. Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is classified as an annual vine plant with elongated internodes, yet the mechanism governing watermelon dwarfing remains unclear. In this study, a compact watermelon mutant dwarf, induced by the insertion of transferred DNA (T-DNA), was discovered. Through resequencing, a gene named domain of unknown function 21 (ClDUF21), located downstream of the T-DNA insertion site, was identified as the candidate gene for the dwarf mutant, and its function

Self-incompatibility (SI) has evolved independently multiple times and prevents self-fertilization in hermaphrodite angiosperms. Several groups of Oleaceae such as jasmines exhibit distylous flowers, with two compatibility groups each associated with a specific floral morph.1 Other Oleaceae species in the olive tribe have two compatibility groups without associated morphological variation.2,3,4,5 The genetic basis of both homomorphic and dimorphic SI systems in Oleaceae is unknown. The glycan-dependent ERAD machinery degrades topologically diverse misfolded proteins.

Many soluble and integral membrane proteins fold in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) with the help of chaperones and folding factors. Despite these efforts, protein folding is intrinsically error prone and amino acid changes, alterations in post-translational modifications or cellular stress can cause protein misfolding. Folding-defective non-native proteins are cleared from the ER and typically undergo ER-associated degradation (ERAD). Here, we investigated whether different misfolded glycoproteins require the same set of ERAD factors and are directed to HRD1 complex-mediated degradation in pla

Nitrate reductase rather than nitric oxide synthase activity is involved in 24-epibrassinolide-induced nitric oxide synthesis to improve tolerance to iron deficiency in strawberry (Fragaria × annassa) by up-regulating the ascorbate-glutathione cycle.

Involvement of nitrate reductase (NR) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-like enzyme in 24-epibrassinolide (EB)-triggered nitric oxide (NO) synthesis to improve iron deficiency (ID) tolerance in strawberry plants was studied. EB was sprayed to strawberry plants every two days for two weeks. Then, the EB-treated plants were pre-treated with inhibitors of NR, tungstate, or NOS, L-NAME for 3 h. During the first three weeks, Fe was supplied as 100 μM EDTA-Fe or FeSO4 to Fe-sufficient or Fe-deficient plants, respectively. Thereafter, plants were subjected for further three weeks to control (100 μM EDT

Orchestration of plant development and defense by indirect crosstalk of salicylic acid and brassinosteorid signaling via transcription factor GhTINY2.

Salicylic acid (SA) and brassinosteroids (BRs) are well known to regulate diverse processes of plant development and stress responses, but the mechanisms by which these phytohormones mediate the growth and defense trade-off are largely unclear. In addition, little is known about the roles of DEHYDRATION RESPONSIVE ELEMENT BINDING transcription factors, especially in biotic stress and plant growth. Here, we identified a cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) APETALA2/ETHYLENE RESPONSIVE FACTOR gene GhTINY2 that is strongly induced by Verticillium dahliae. Crosstalk among Jasmonate, Salicylate and Ethylene Signaling Pathways in Plant Disease and Immune Responses.

Phytohormone crosstalk is crucial for plant defenses against pathogens and insects in which salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and ethylene (ET) play key roles. These low molecular mass signals critically trigger and modulate plant resistance against biotrophic as well as necrotrophic pathogens through a complex signaling network that even involves participation of other hormones. Crosstalk among SA, JA and ET is mediated by different molecular players, considered as integral part of these crosscommunicating signal transduction pathways. Recent progress has revealed that the positive ver

Microbial production of plant hormones: Opportunities and challenges.

Plant hormones are a class of organic substances which are synthesized during the plant metabolism. They have obvious physiological effect on plant growth at very low concentrations. Generally, plant hormones are mainly divided into 5 categories: auxins, cytokinins, ethylene, gibberellins (GAs) and abscisic acid (ABA). With the deepening of research, some novel plant hormones such as brassinosteroid and salicylates have been found and identified. The plant hormone products are mainly obtained through plant extraction, chemical synthesis as well as microbial fermentation. However, the extremely

Nitric Oxide Enhances Salt Tolerance in Ginger Seedlings Through Phytohormone Homeostasis and Starch and Sugar Metabolism.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a key signaling molecule regulating plant stress responses. In our study, the NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) significantly promoted ginger seedling growth under salt stress, while treatment with the NO scavenger cPTIO resulted in an opposite response, supporting the involvement of NO in salt-stress responses. Transcriptome profiling of ginger leaves identified 2252 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), which were enriched in 55 Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways. Further, analysis showed that 19 DEGs were enriched in plant hormone signal transduc

Exploring the functional roles of secondary metabolites in Brassica defense networks.

Plants produce a diverse array of secondary metabolites (SMs) that play critical roles in adaptation to environmental challenges and defense against pathogens and herbivores. Brassica species accumulate a wide range of SMs, including glucosinolates and their hydrolysis products (isothiocyanates, nitriles, thiocyanates, epithionitriles, and oxazolidinethiones), phenolics, tannins, cyanogenic glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids. These compounds function as defense molecules, antioxidants, signaling mediators, and regulators of plant growth and stress responses. This review summariz

Diverse reactions catalyzed by cytochrome P450 and biosynthesis of steroid hormone.

Steroid hormones modulate numerous physiological processes in various higher organisms. Research on the physiology, biosynthesis, and metabolic degradation of steroid hormones is crucial for developing drugs, agrochemicals, and anthelmintics. Most steroid hormone biosynthetic pathways, excluding those in insects, have been elucidated, and the roles of several cytochrome P450s (CYPs, P450s), heme (iron protoporphyrin IX)-containing monooxygenases, have been identified. Specifically, P450s of the animal steroid hormone biosynthetic pathways and their three dimensional structures and reaction mec
