Immediate effects of upper limb exercises with and without deep breathing on lung function after cardiac surgery - a randomized crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Open heart surgery, involving median sternotomy, may cause diminished chest wall motion and restrictive pulmonary function in the early postoperative period. Thoracic and upper extremity range of motion (ROM) exercises are often recommended after surgery but have not been evaluated regarding effect on lung volumes and oxygenation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the immediate effect of upper limb elevations, with or without simultaneous deep breathing, on lung function after cardiac surgery. METHODS: In a randomized 2 × 2 crossover trial, 22 adult patients (> 18 years

The effect of breathing exercises combined with manual therapy on muscle tension dysphonia in traditional singers: a blinded randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is common in traditional singers and can lead to serious complications, but there is inconclusive evidence about how MTD should be treated in singers as professional voice users. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of breathing exercises combined with manual therapy versus breathing exercises and manual therapy on voice quality in traditional singers suffering from MTD. METHODS: In this blinded randomized clinical trial, 60 patients with MTD were randomly allocated to four groups: (1) breathing exercises, (2) manual therapy, (3) combi

Effect of device-guided breathing exercises on blood pressure in hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: In patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), it is hard to reach treatment objectives for blood pressure (BP) with classical treatment options. Recently, reducing breathing frequency has been advocated as a method to reduce BP. We examined if an electronic device such as Resperate, by reducing breathing frequency, would lead to BP reduction in a population of patients with DM2 and hypertension. Our secondary objective was to study the effect of this device on quality of life (QOL). METHODS: A randomized, single-blind, controlled trial was conducted over a period of 8 weeks to e

Thoracoabdominal breathing pattern across exercise intensity domains: performance level insights in cyclists.

Thoracoabdominal breathing pattern (THA) can be influenced by factors such as exercise intensity, postural demands, and individual variability, which could be associated with performance level. The present study aims to investigate the THA of cyclists with different performance levels during increasing exercise intensity. Fourteen male professional cyclists performed resting breathing manoeuvres and a step-incremental test on a cycle ergometer. Physiological responses were monitored using a metabolic gas analyser and were then classified into two groups: Higher and Lower VO2max. THA was record

Abnormal breathing patterns and hyperventilation are common in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome during exercise.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) experience symptoms of fatigue, dyspnea, mental fog, and worsening fatigue after physical or mental efforts. Some of these patients have been found to hyperventilate. In long COVID patients, many of whom also have ME/CFS, dysfunctional breathing (DB) has been described. Whether patients with ME/CFS, independent of COVID-19, experience dysfunctional breathing is unknown, as well as how it may relate to hyperventilation. METHODS: We performed serial 2-day cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in 57 patient

Exercise ventilatory irregularity can be quantified by approximate entropy to detect breathing pattern disorder.

BACKGROUND: Breathing pattern disorder (BPD) is a prevalent cause of exertional dyspnea and yet there is currently no reliable objective measure for its diagnosis. We propose that statistical analysis of ventilatory irregularity, quantified by approximate entropy (ApEn), could be used to detect BPD when applied to cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) data. We hypothesised that ApEn of ventilatory variables (tidal volume (VT), breathing frequency (Bf), minute ventilation (VE)) would be greater, i.e. more irregular, in patients with BPD than healthy controls. METHODS: We evaluated ventilatory A

Positive effect of abdominal breathing exercise on gastroesophageal reflux disease: a randomized, controlled study.

OBJECTIVES: The lower esophageal sphincter (LES), surrounded by diaphragmatic muscle, prevents gastroesophageal reflux. When these structures become incompetent, gastric contents may cause gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). For treatment, lifestyle interventions are always recommended. We hypothesized that by actively training the crura of the diaphragm as part of the LES using breathing training exercises, GERD can be positively influenced. METHODS: A prospective randomized controlled study was performed. Patients with non-erosive GERD or healed esophagitis without large hernia and/or p

Effects of ankle exercise combined with deep breathing on blood flow velocity in the femoral vein.

Ankle exercises are commonly used to facilitate venous return in the lower extremity and to prevent deep vein thrombosis. Moreover, the respiratory cycle affects venous return. This study examined the effects of ankle exercise combined with deep breathing on the blood flow velocity in the femoral vein. Twenty healthy males (mean age 21.3 years), who had no medical history of lower extremity disease, were recruited for this study. The blood flow velocity in the femoral vein was measured while performing four exercise protocols: quiet breathing while resting (QR), deep breathing (DB), ankle exer
